cursed the moon. This resulted in the moon losing its glow so an upset moon came to Somnath in Gujarat along with
wife Rohini and worshipped the Sparsh Lingam. After praying, Lord Shiva blessed him and he got his radiance back.
Further Lord Shiva resided there with the name Somachandra on his request. Since then, that place is known as
Somnath.
MALLIKARJUNA
Known as the “Kailash of the South”, Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga temple is located in Andhra Pradesh on the banks of the
Krishna river. The story about Mallikarjuna in Shiva Purana says that Lord Kartikeya was angry when Ganesha got
married. He then decided to live away from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and He went to Mount Krauncha.
Goddess Parvati was sad that Her son left so She sent the Gods, sages, and nymphs to get Him back but He didn’t
agree. So Lord Shiva and Parvati went there but He didn’t let them come close to Him so they stayed six miles away
from Him. Thus, the place is called “Mallikarjuna” where “Mallika” means “Parvati” and “Arjuna” is “Shiva”. The Shrishail

MAHAKALESHWAR
Brahmanas who worshipped Lord Shiva and attacked the city. Even when the demon and his cohorts threatened to kill
them, they continued their prayers and were not distracted at all. Seeing their devotion and continuous prayers, Lord
Shiva appeared there in front of the linga that they were worshipping. Lord Shiva burnt Dushana to ashes with His roar
and all the soldiers were also killed. Further, the brahmana brothers requested Lord Shiva to be present there so He
assumed the name “Mahakala”. The Mahakaleshwar temple was then established and the Mahakal Jyotirling is
worshipped by many devotees all over India.

desirable objects that one can think of” since he was slightly proud. Narada replied that Mount Sumeru is superior that
Vindhya as all the Gods are always present there. So Vindhya became the equal height of Sumeru and prayed to Lord
Shiva for six months. After all these prayers, Lord Shiva appeared and Vindhya mountain asked for Shiva to be present
there so he also gets equal importance as Mount Sumeru. The linga worshipped by Vindhya is known as Omkara and
thus, the Omkareshwar temple came into existence. The Omkareshwar Shivling is beautifully set in the temple and has
great importance spiritually.

BHIMASHANKAR
then targeted the king of Kamarupa who worshipped Vishnu and imprisoned him and his wife. The king and his wife
prayed to Shiva in the prison and this news reached Bhima. He went there to behead the king and Lord Shiva
appeared from the linga. Lord Shiva destroyed all the weapons used by Bhima, and He killed Bhima. The Gods were
gratified and asked Lord Shiva to maintain His presence there which resulted in the Bhimashankara temple’s existence.
KASHI VISHWANATH
Kashi Vishwanath temple located in the city of Varanasi or Kashi is the seventh Jyotirlinga. Brahma performed Tapasya
at this place and it was so difficult that Vishnu shook His head in disbelief. He shook His head, a mani (jewel) fell from
Vishnu’s ear (Karna). That place is known as “Manikarnika” which is a famous tirtha now. Lord Shiva and Goddess
Parvati were visiting Brahma so Brahma started singing hymns to praise Lord Shiva. While He was chanting, He
mispronounced a hymn which angered Shiva that led to severing one of Brahma’s head. This act of Shiva was
equivalent to a crime as He beheaded a Brahmana. That head was stuck to Shiva’s back and it stayed with Him
wherever He went and it fell off when Shiva went to Varanasi. This made Him realize that it was a special place and
Shiva decided to be present there. That is why Kashi Vishwanath temple is also one of the important Jyotirlingas

mistake. He then asked Lord Shiva to purify the place so Lord Shiva asked the river Ganga to flow through that land.

condition that they would remain rooted to the spot forever if placed on the ground. As Ravana headed towards Sri
Lanka, Lord Varuna entered his body and had an urgent need to relieve himself so Lord Vishnu came as a lad to hold
the lingam for time being. Vishnu kept the lingam on the ground and as a result, it was rooted to the spot. Ravana cut
off nine of his heads as a self-punishment and Lord Shiva joined the heads to the body just like a vaidya (doctor),
hence, the place came to be known as Vaidyanath.

GRISHNESHWAR
Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple also known as Ghushmeswara, Kusumeswara, and Grushmeswara is in Aurangabad,
Maharashtra. The story of how this Jyotirlinga came into being is related to Sudharma and his wife Sudeha who were
not able to give birth to a son. Sudeha felt sad as other women insulted her for not having a son. She asked Sudharma
to marry her niece Ghushna to have a son but he didn’t agree as it would lead to Sudeha being jealous of Ghushna
once she gives birth to a child. Ghushna was a devotee of Shiva and used to make and worship one hundred and one
lingams every day. She used to immerse them in a pond after the prayers were done for that day. On completion of one
lakh lingas, Ghushna gave birth to a son and as Sudeha convinced her husband that she wouldn’t have feelings of
jealousy, Sudharma married Ghushna. Eventually, Ghushna started getting more important and Sudeha ended up
