SPHATIK

SOMNATH

Shree Somnath Jyotirlinga temple is the

first Jyotirlinga and the beautiful structure

makes it a picturesque pilgrimage spot.

The Dwadash Jyotirling pilgrimage starts

with the Somnath temple. The story about

this temple from the ancient texts tells that

the Moon God was cursed because of

which he lost his luster. The Shiva Purana

states that the moon loved his wife Rohini

the most among the 27 wives he had. His

27 wives were the daughters of Daksha

Prajapati and due to his ignorance

towards other wives, Daksha Prajapati

cursed the moon. This resulted in the moon losing its glow so an upset moon came to Somnath in Gujarat along with

wife Rohini and worshipped the Sparsh Lingam. After praying, Lord Shiva blessed him and he got his radiance back.
Further Lord Shiva resided there with the name Somachandra on his request. Since then, that place is known as

Somnath.

MALLIKARJUNA

Known as the “Kailash of the South”, Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga temple is located in Andhra Pradesh on the banks of the

Krishna river. The story about Mallikarjuna in Shiva Purana says that Lord Kartikeya was angry when Ganesha got
married. He then decided to live away from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and He went to Mount Krauncha.

Goddess Parvati was sad that Her son left so She sent the Gods, sages, and nymphs to get Him back but He didn’t

agree. So Lord Shiva and Parvati went there but He didn’t let them come close to Him so they stayed six miles away
from Him. Thus, the place is called “Mallikarjuna” where “Mallika” means “Parvati” and “Arjuna” is “Shiva”. The Shrishail

Mallikarjun temple has a lot of visitors every year.

MAHAKALESHWAR

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is the

third Jyotirlinga located in Madhya

Pradesh and situated on the

banks of the Kshipra river. There

was a brahmana named

Vedapriya who had four sons-

Devapriya, Priyamedha, Suvrita,

and Suvrata. They used to read

Vedas but a rakshasa named

Dushana couldn’t stand the idea

of religion being followed. So he

came to destroy these four

Brahmanas who worshipped Lord Shiva and attacked the city. Even when the demon and his cohorts threatened to kill

them, they continued their prayers and were not distracted at all. Seeing their devotion and continuous prayers, Lord
Shiva appeared there in front of the linga that they were worshipping. Lord Shiva burnt Dushana to ashes with His roar

and all the soldiers were also killed. Further, the brahmana brothers requested Lord Shiva to be present there so He

assumed the name “Mahakala”. The Mahakaleshwar temple was then established and the Mahakal Jyotirling is
worshipped by many devotees all over India.

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga

Temple is a sacred
pilgrimage spot for

devotees of Lord Shiva

and the fourth Jyotirlinga.

It is located on an island

“Shivpuri” in Madhya

Pradesh. There are

different stories related to

this temple and the one

from Shiva Purana says

that Narada had once visited mountain Vindhya. While Vindhya worshipped Narada, he also said “I am full of all the

desirable objects that one can think of” since he was slightly proud. Narada replied that Mount Sumeru is superior that

Vindhya as all the Gods are always present there. So Vindhya became the equal height of Sumeru and prayed to Lord
Shiva for six months. After all these prayers, Lord Shiva appeared and Vindhya mountain asked for Shiva to be present

there so he also gets equal importance as Mount Sumeru. The linga worshipped by Vindhya is known as Omkara and

thus, the Omkareshwar temple came into existence. The Omkareshwar Shivling is beautifully set in the temple and has
great importance spiritually.

KEDARNATH

The fifth Jyotirlinga is Kedarnath

and it is located on the Rudra
Himalaya range. The beautiful

landscape with snow-capped

mountains around the temple
makes for a breathtaking view. It is

said that there were two sages

Nara and Narayana who were
Lord Vishnu’s incarnation. They

prayed for a long time and finally,

Shiva appeared. He granted them a boon, they desired to have Shiva’s presence in the form of linga on peak Kedara.

BHIMASHANKAR

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple

being the sixth Jyotirlinga is

situated on the banks of the
Bhima river in the Pune region of

Maharashtra. The story of this

temple dates back to the time of
Ramayana. Bhima, the son of

Kumbhakarna, comes to know

that Lord Rama killed his father.
Since he knew that Lord Rama

was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu,

he decided to avenge Vishnu. So
he started praying to Brahma and further when Lord Brahma appeared, he wished for a boon to become strong. Bhima

then targeted the king of Kamarupa who worshipped Vishnu and imprisoned him and his wife. The king and his wife
prayed to Shiva in the prison and this news reached Bhima. He went there to behead the king and Lord Shiva
appeared from the linga. Lord Shiva destroyed all the weapons used by Bhima, and He killed Bhima. The Gods were

gratified and asked Lord Shiva to maintain His presence there which resulted in the Bhimashankara temple’s existence.

KASHI VISHWANATH

Kashi Vishwanath temple located in the city of Varanasi or Kashi is the seventh Jyotirlinga. Brahma performed Tapasya
at this place and it was so difficult that Vishnu shook His head in disbelief. He shook His head, a mani (jewel) fell from
Vishnu’s ear (Karna). That place is known as “Manikarnika” which is a famous tirtha now. Lord Shiva and Goddess

Parvati were visiting Brahma so Brahma started singing hymns to praise Lord Shiva. While He was chanting, He
mispronounced a hymn which angered Shiva that led to severing one of Brahma’s head. This act of Shiva was
equivalent to a crime as He beheaded a Brahmana. That head was stuck to Shiva’s back and it stayed with Him

wherever He went and it fell off when Shiva went to Varanasi. This made Him realize that it was a special place and
Shiva decided to be present there. That is why Kashi Vishwanath temple is also one of the important Jyotirlingas

TRIMBAKESHWAR

The eighth Jyotirlinga is

Trimbakeshwar located near

mountain Brahmagiri where the

river Godavari flows. The Shiva
Purana states that Shiva resided

at Trimbakeshwar at the request

of River Godavari, Gautam Rishi,
and other Gods. As Gautam rishi

(sage) had got a pit of an

unlimited supply of food as a boon
from Varuna, the other Gods envied him. So they sent a cow in the granary and that was killed by Gautam Rishi by

mistake. He then asked Lord Shiva to purify the place so Lord Shiva asked the river Ganga to flow through that land.
Everyone praised Shiva and He resided there beside the river Ganga as Trimbakeshwar. It is believed that wishes are
fulfilled by visiting Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga.

Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga also known

as Baidyanath Jyotirlinga or
Baijnath Jyotirling is one of the

most visited Jyotirlingas located in

Deoghar. Legends say that
Ravana was meditating and he

asked Shiva to make Sri Lanka

unbeatable. He also tried to uproot
Mount Kailas but he failed as Lord

Shiva crushed it. Further, Ravana

asked for penance and he was
given the Jyotirlingas on the

condition that they would remain rooted to the spot forever if placed on the ground. As Ravana headed towards Sri
Lanka, Lord Varuna entered his body and had an urgent need to relieve himself so Lord Vishnu came as a lad to hold
the lingam for time being. Vishnu kept the lingam on the ground and as a result, it was rooted to the spot. Ravana cut

off nine of his heads as a self-punishment and Lord Shiva joined the heads to the body just like a vaidya (doctor),
hence, the place came to be known as Vaidyanath.

NAGESHWAR

The tenth Jyotirlinga is Nageshwar

and it is considered to be very

significant as it represents
protection from all types of poison.
The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga temple

is situated on the coast of

Saurashtra in Gujarat. The Shiv
Purana tells us how this Jyotirlinga

came into existence. There was a

devotee of Shiva named Supriya
who was traveling across the ocean that was ruled by the demon Daruka. This rakshasa used to imprison and kill those

who passed through the sea. Daruka imprisoned Supriya as well so Supriya set up a lingam over there and started

RAMESHWARAM

Rameshwara, the eleventh Jyotirlinga is

located in the southern part of India. The

story of this Jyotirlinga is linked with
Ramayana from the time when Ravana

had abducted Sita. As Lord Rama was

looking for her, He was assisted by
monkeys and they reached towards the

south shore of the ocean. Lord Rama was

thirsty and He asked the monkeys to fetch
water but He felt that He should pray to

Lord Shiva first. So He built a linga and

worshipped it with flowers. His prayers
were so powerful that Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and their companions appeared before Him and gave Him

blessings. Lord Rama requested Shiva to stay there forever and the linga came to be known as Rameshwara. The
beautiful architecture of this temple makes it worth visiting and the magnificent shrine inside the temple is worshipped
by the devotees to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

GRISHNESHWAR

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga temple also known as Ghushmeswara, Kusumeswara, and Grushmeswara is in Aurangabad,

Maharashtra. The story of how this Jyotirlinga came into being is related to Sudharma and his wife Sudeha who were
not able to give birth to a son. Sudeha felt sad as other women insulted her for not having a son. She asked Sudharma
to marry her niece Ghushna to have a son but he didn’t agree as it would lead to Sudeha being jealous of Ghushna

once she gives birth to a child. Ghushna was a devotee of Shiva and used to make and worship one hundred and one
lingams every day. She used to immerse them in a pond after the prayers were done for that day. On completion of one
lakh lingas, Ghushna gave birth to a son and as Sudeha convinced her husband that she wouldn’t have feelings of

jealousy, Sudharma married Ghushna. Eventually, Ghushna started getting more important and Sudeha ended up

feeling jealous so she killed her son and threw his body in the same pond where Ghushna immersed the lingas.

Ghushna started praying as usual

and was not distracted by this

incident so seeing her devotion,

Lord Shiva revived her son’s life.
Shiva also wanted to kill Sudeha

but Ghushna begged for her life.

This act of forgiveness impressed
Shiva and He granted Ghushna

another boon so she requested

Him to stay in a linga near that
pond. So the place was known as

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga.
