INTRODUCTION TO ASTROLOGY
Astrology – Science or Hokum
What is Astrology? Some call it science, some call it pseudoscience and there are even some who call
it hokum. I call it an astronomical science which explains the behavioural patterns and timing of
events in a person’s life based on position of planets, constellations and the calculations thereof.

Esteemed colleges and universities around the world have recognized Astrology as a subject of
study. Formal courses are offered including graduate, postgraduate, research degrees, diploma and
certificate courses. There are dedicated universities and colleges for studying Astrology in India and
abroad. To mention a few –

The Institute of astrological studies (The Kepler College of Astrological Sciences and Arts) in Seattle
in the United States is the first university in the Western Hemisphere to grant degrees in astrology.
The first courses of astrology at this began in July 2000.

University of Wales Trinity Saint David, UK offers Postgraduate course in Cultural Astronomy and
Astrology

Mayo School of Astrology, London offers certificate and diploma courses for online or distance
learning programs.

London School of Astrology offers extensive 3 years course in Astrology

Besides these there are numerous universities and colleges in India offering courses in Astrology.

There have also been judgements in past by Hon’ble High Court of Mumbai and Supreme Court of
India ruling that Astrology cannot be banned.

Judgement from Hon’ble High Court of Mumbai in year 2004 against a PIL to ban Astrology:-

“A purported ban on practising and promoting astrology and related sciences, which are a time-
tested science of more than 4,000 years, is totally misconceived and unjustifiable,''

Also, a judgement from Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in the same year ruled that Astrology should
be introduced as a course of study in universities.

Clearly, with so many esteemed universities and colleges and Hon’ble courts of justice supporting
Astrology, it cannot be a hokum.

Apostles of Astrology
Astrology is not a myth, it is not superstitious. Many revered and learned men in history have
followed and preached Astrology. Intellectuals, thinkers, writers, poets, politicians, billionaires,
businessmen, erudite people from all walks of life have leveraged the power of Astrology.

Quoting here few of them -

“Heaven sends down its good and evil symbols and wise men act accordingly”
- Confucius (551 BC), Philosopher

“A physician without a knowledge of Astrology has no right to call himself a physician.”

- Hippocrates (460 BC), Father of Medicine

8
"Astrology is one of the most ancient Sciences, held in high esteem of old, by the Wise and the
Great.”
- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) Founding Father of the United States

“These auspicious aspects, which the astrologers subsequently interpreted for me, may have been
the causes of my preservation.”
- Johann Von Goethe (1749-1832), Poet, Germany

“I was born with Halley’s Comet and I expect to die upon its return”

- Mark Twain (1835-1910), Writer, USA

And he did die a day after the Comet’s closest approach to
Earth.

“Millionaires don’t use Astrology, billionaires do”

- J.P. Morgan (1837-1913), America’s first billionaire

“Who knows the power that Saturn has over us, or Venus? But it is a vital power, rippling exquisitely
through us all the time”
- D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930), Writer, United Kingdom

“Astrology is assured of recognition from psychology, without further restrictions, because astrology
represents the summation of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.”
- Carl Jung (1875-1961), Psychiatrist, Switzerland

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), Father of Modern Science, made career out of drafting horoscopes. He
was referred to as “Mathematicus” meaning a combination of Mathematics, Astronomy and
Astrology.

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), Mathematician and Astronomer was the official Astrological advisor
to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II.

President Theodore Roosevelt, 60th President of the United States of America, kept his horoscope
mounted on a chess board in the oval office. When asked about it he would reply,  “I always keep my
weather eye on the opposition of my seventh house Moon to my first house Mars.”

In 1988 the White House confirmed that the Raegen’s were followers of Astrology. In 2016, Nancy
Raegen turned to Astrology to protect her husband.

These were some of the luminaries who practiced and followed Astrology. Beyond doubt they are all
eminent and revered in their respective fields and need no introduction.

9
Why do I need Astrology
What can Astrology do for me?

Why do I need to know about myself or a have a glimpse of my future?

What can an Astrologer tell me which I don’t know about myself and my life?

Can Astrology change my destiny?

Is Astrology meant to scare me showing a bleak future?

Does Astrology only mean to spend money in the name of remedies?

I will try to answer all these, and some more questions to make you aware that Astrology is neither a
miracle or a superstitious, nor is it fake but it very scientifically tries to answer questions you have
about yourself and helps in taking correct decisions.

Your birth chart is what is created based on the position of planets and stars at the time of your
birth. It encompasses all aspects of your personal and professional life showing flavours of highs and
lows. An Astrologer helps decipher your birth chart for you and makes you aware of the possibilities
of events happening in your future and the direction your life can take in times to come.

Why would you even want to know that?

Do you check daily weather forecast specially when there is a possibility of rain? What do you do if
there is prediction of rain? Can you stop the rain? Can you change the direction of clouds? No!!

But if you are aware of the possibility of rain, you can carry an umbrella or you can change your
travel plan. Astrology works in an analogous fashion. It makes you aware of the possibilities of
events in future so that you can plan your actions accordingly. It does not change your destiny, nor it
changes planets. But it allows you to think through and helps you control the possible turbulence by
managing your own course of action. The remedies prescribed help to alleviate the ill effects of
planets and help you sail through the trying times peacefully.

Sometimes we proceed in life with a fixed mindset following the most benign path, taking minimum
risk. And sometimes we may even become over ambitious taking risk in every possible direction, not
willing to follow the conventional path. What is the correct approach? Astrology helps resolve such
dilemma, suggesting which time is favourable or unfavourable for any action of yours. It helps by
predicting a general complexion of your horoscope whether the time is conducive or not to a
particular decision of yours.

Yes, the Astrologer can tell you much more than you can know about yourself as he/she can look at
your horoscope and predict about your core strength areas and based on the
Mahadasha/Antardasha coming in future what could be the best profession for you. It can also very
clearly help you resolve the doubts whether business is a better option for you or a job. If business,
whether a partnership would be fruitful or not. It can predict to the extent as to partnership with
whom would be most beneficial/detrimental – with spouse/family member/friend etc.

Astrology can help you improve your own life areas which you realise are not perfect but you are
helpless about those. As an example, you may be short tempered, feeling irritated at slightest of
things and not knowing the reason of your behaviour. After the spur of moment you realise your
reaction was not right but you really can’t improve yourself even after realising your fault. Your

10
horoscope can reveal the reason(s) of your behaviour and can offer remedies as simple as offering
prayers in a temple or offering water to Sun or drinking water in a silver utensil which can have
remarkable impact on your mind set and you start noticing the difference in yourself.

Remedies in Astrology are not magic, nor are they always meant to be heavily expensive. A golden
rule mentioned in our Vedas which not many people are aware of is that remedies work only and
only if performed by self or by a blood relation. No remedy works if you give money to a priest or an
Astrologer and he/she performs the pooja on your behalf. The simplest and most effective remedy
Astrology offers is to improve the significations of a planet which is afflicted in your horoscope. Each
planet is a significator of a relationship, and the planet improves if you improve that relationship. For
e.g., Saturn is the significator of servants and subordinates. If you want to reduce the ill effects of
Saturn in your life, you only need to improve your behaviour with your subordinates. It is as simple
and as effective as it can be!

BASICS OF ASTROLOGY
The Birth Chart
The birth chart or a horoscope is a snapshot of the sky i.e., the position of planets and the stars in
different zodiac signs at the time and place where you were born. The entire sky is divided into 12
zodiac signs. There are 7 planets and 2 shadow planets. Besides, there are 12 houses in your chart
each of which signifies a particular area of your life. The details of each of these we shall go through
in the subsequent sections.

Ascendant

Fig: The Birth Chart/Horoscope

The counting of houses is done in anticlockwise fashion starting from house no. 1 as shown in the
figure above. The Ascendant (Asc) or the Lagna or the Rising sign is the zodiac sign rising at the
eastern horizon at the time and place when you were born. The distribution of signs in different
houses takes place sequentially in anticlockwise direction starting from the Ascendant. In North
Indian chart style, 1st House is always mentioned in the place where Ascendant is present.

11
Throughout the book we shall be representing birth chart in North Indian style for the sake of
uniformity and simplicity.

The Moon sign of a person is the zodiac sign in which Moon is present at the time and place of birth.

The Sun sign of a person is the zodiac sign in which Sun is present at the time and place of birth.

Note: The Rising sign/Ascendant/Lagna is different from the Sun sign in western astrology. Vedic
Astrology gives maximum significance to Ascendant than the Sun sign or Moon sign of a person. For
certain aspects of life, analysis and predictions are done based on Sun sign and Moon sign also. For
the sake of maintaining simplicity and focusing only on the very basics of Astrology, I will be
explaining all concepts based on the Ascendant.

The 12 zodiac signs are mentioned in the chart by their respective numbers – Aries (1), Taurus (2),
Gemini (3), Cancer (4), Leo (5), Virgo (6), Libra (7), Scorpio (8), Sagittarius (9), Capricorn (10),
Aquarius (11), Pisces (12). These 12 signs cover the entire zodiac of 360º, hence each sign is of 30º.

For the sake of simplicity we consider each house to be spanning across one zodiac sign and the 1 st
house always starts with the Rising sign or the Ascendant. Each house is of 30º like each sign and the
all the 12 houses cover 360º of the entire zodiac with each house containing exactly one sign.

The planets – Sun (Su) , Moon (Mo), Mars (Ma), Mercury (Me), Jupiter (Ju), Venus (Ve), Saturn (Sa)
and the shadow planets Rahu (Ra), Ketu (Ke) are distributed in the birth chart based on the zodiac
sign in which they were present in the sky at the time and place when a person is born.

All these calculations and birth chart generation is available online and in all the Astrology software
based on date of birth, time of birth and place of birth of the individual. Hence, I am purposely
omitting those and keeping those out of scope of this book.

As an example, consider the following chart –

Here, Ascendant is Leo (5) hence the 1st House will start with the sign of Leo (5).

Sun and Mercury are in 1st House in Leo (5)

12
Venus is in 2nd House in Virgo (6)

The 3rd House does not contain any planet

Rahu is in 4th House in Scorpio (8)

The 5th House does not contain any planet

Moon is in 6th House in Capricorn (10)

Saturn is in 7th House in Aquarius (11)

The 8th House does not contain any planet

Mars is in 9th House in Pisces (12)

Ketu is in 10th House in Venus (2)

The 11th House does not contain any planet

Jupiter is in 12th House in Cancer (4)

As mentioned earlier, Sun sign is the sign in which Sun is present in the birth chart. In this example
chart, Leo (5) is the Sun sign.

Moon sign is the sign in which moon is present in the birth chart. In this example chart, Capricorn
(10) is the Moon sign.

Introduction to Houses
Meaning and Significance of the Twelve House
As mentioned in the previous section the birth chart consists of 12 houses counting of which starts
taking Ascendant as the 1st House and going in the anticlockwise direction till the 12 th house. Each
house governs a particular aspect of a person’s life from birth till the end of life. The signification of
each house is as follows: -

1st House

The 1st house is the most important house as it represents the native himself. It signifies the native,
his temperament, his physical appearance, his personality, his strengths and weaknesses.

The 2nd house represents wealth, family, speech, imagination, observation. The wealth it represents
is the accumulated wealth – movable assets like income, money, gold, jewellery. This house is also
the house of independence.

The 12th house is the house of expenditure and losses. It is also the house of arrest, punishment and

Types of Houses – Angles, Trines, Trik, Trishdaya, Upachaya

All 12 houses in the birth chart can be categorised as follows:

Angles / Kendra Houses

Houses 1st, 4th , 7th , 10th are Angles or Kendra Houses. These are auspicious houses and are also
known as Vishnu Sthan

Trines / Trikona Houses

Houses 1st, 5th and 9th are Trines or Trikona Houses. These are auspicious houses and are also known
as Lakshmi Sthan

14
Trik Houses / Malefic houses / Dust Sthan

Houses 6th, 8th and 12th are known as Trik Houses. These are inauspicious houses and bring suffering,
struggle, confiscation, debts, expenditure and diseases.

Upachaya Houses

Houses 3rd , 6th , 10th , 11th are Upachaya houses or the houses of growth

Introduction to Planets
There are 7 planets and 2 shadow planets. These are – Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus,
Saturn. Please note that Sun and Moon are also considered as planets.

The two shadow planets are Rahu and Ketu. There are mythological stories associated with these
two planets but essentially these two are mathematical points which are very significant in a
person’s chart and have lot of impact on his/her life.

How is a planet considered good or bad i.e., benefic or malefic shall be discussed in subsequent
sections. In the following section I am only stating the effects on significations of a planet if it is
benefic or malefic.

Significations (Karakatwas) and Nature of each Planet

Sun

Sun is considered the king of planets. It is the lord of zodiac sign Leo(5). It is the significator of a
person’s soul. It is also a significator of one’s prestige and power. Health and general well being
are also influenced by Sun. Government, favours from government, royalty, leadership also
come under the influence of Sun. It is a planet signified by heat, fire and dryness. It is a
masculine planet and represents positivity. Metals of Sun are gold, copper and ruby. An
unafflicted Sun in the chart bestows leadership, confidence, excellent decision making
capability, authority, favours from father and government. However, an afflicted Sun can cause
cruelty, false pride, arrogance, and losses from government.

Moon

Moon is considered as the queen of planets. It is the lord of zodiac sign Cancer(4). It is the
significator of a person’s mind. It is also a significator of liquids, masses, public, white coloured
objects. Travel and tourism are also represented by Moon. It is a negative, feminine and

Exaltation, Debilitation and Mool Trikona signs

Each planet has an exaltation and a debilitation point which are the essentially the degrees of a
planet in a particular sign. The planet is in its highest happiness state when in its exaltation point and
gives maximum positive results of its significations. The planet gets tired and looses its strength
when in its debilitation point and does not give good results of its significations.

Some texts give exaltation and debilitation points for Rahu and Ketu also, but being shadow planets,
I am not considering those points.

We have seen in the description of planets in previous page that each planet, except for Sun and
Moon, owns two signs. Out of these two signs, the planet is more comfortable and happier in one of
the signs than in the other. The nature of the planet resembles the characteristics of this sign more
than the other sign. This sign is known as the Mool Trikona sign of the planet.

The following table summarizes the Lordships, Exaltation, Debilitation and Mool Trikona points of all
planets: -

Planetary Motion
Each planet takes different time to traverse the entire zodiac of 360º. In that one ellipse it traverses
each zodiac sign exactly once. Since each sign is of 30º and there are 12 signs and 12 houses hence
the time a planet spends in each sign and hence each house is equal to time taken by the planet to
cover the zodiac divided by 12

Following table gives the time taken by each planet to traverse the complete zodiac and the time it
spends in each sign/house:-

Malefic and Benefic Planets

Natural Benefic and Malefic
Each planet, including the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu can be considered as a Natural benefic or a
Natural malefic planet.

Jupiter and Venus are natural benefic planets

Rahu, Ketu, Mars and Saturn are natural malefic planets

Moon is considered as functional benefic from the 8 th day of Krishna Paksha (waning phase) to the
8th day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase). Rest other days it is considered as functional malefic

Sun

Mercury takes the characteristics of the planets it is associated with

Functional Benefic and Malefic

- Ascendant or Lagna lord is always benefic
- Planet which is lord of Kendra and/or Trikona is a functional benefic planet
- Lord of Trik House is functional malefic unless it is also a lord of Triokna. If it is also lord of
Trikona, its malefic tendency reduces and it is treated as neutral

18
e.g., Sagittarius Ascendant Venus being lord of 6 th House is a functional malefic but Mars
despite being lord of 12 th House is not functional malefic as it is also lord of 5 th House which is
a trine
- Planet which has its MoolTrikona sign in Trik House is considered as malefic

Awasthas of Planets
The degrees of planets determine the state or the Awastha of the planet. There are the following
Awasthas:-

In Odd Rashi In Even Rashi Awastha Meaning Results

0° to 6° 24° to 30° Bala Infant Minimum

Aspects of Planets
Another very important concept to be considered is Aspect of a planet on houses. Aspect implies
that a planet will have an impact on the significations of the house it has an aspect on. Every planet
has an aspect on the house 7 th from its own house. Apart from this, the following aspects should also
be considered: -

Saturn’s aspect on houses 3rd and 10th from it

Mars’ aspect on houses 4th and 8th from it

Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu’s aspect on houses 5th and 9th from it

For example, in this figure Sun and Mercury have an aspect on the 7 th House.

Venus has an aspect on 8th House.

Rahu has aspects on 8th, 10th, 12th House

Moon has aspect on 12th House

Saturn has aspects on 9th, 1st and 4th House

Mars has aspects on 12th, 3rd, 4th House

Combust Planets
The concept of a combust planet is w.r.t its placement nearer to the Sun. A planet which is less than
6º - 7º from the Sun is considered to be combust due to Sun’s rays and completely fails to deliver its
results.
