DESCRIPTION
✓ What is the title of the artwork?
Hating Kapatid
✓ Who is the artist?
Elmer Borlongan, a Filipino artist.
✓When and where was it created?
It was created in Manila in 1993.
✓ What media was used?
Acrylic on Canvas
✓ Is there a primary subject in the piece? Explain.
The main subject is the two identical people who are curled up and trying to squeeze
into one bench.
✓ What specific elements of art can you find within this piece? Explain each.
The first is space, which contains both the space occupied by the object and the
space surrounding it. Next is the color and value; even though the artist has used
dark colors, we still notice the degree of brightness and darkness in the colors.
Lastly, the texture is formed by the artist's use of color value, which creates a mix of
soft and rough illusory texture.
2. ANALYSIS
✓ How do elements of art interact with each other?
All of them are arranged and harmonized with one another, giving the art a sense of
completion and wholeness. It also directs my attention to main spots and generates
deeper meaning just by looking at the work.
✓ What specific elements stand out?
Color, value, and texture.
✓ What principles of design can you find? Explain each.
Harmony, because each element of the painting is united and appealingly organized.
Balance, since they are identical adolescents who are crouching perpendicular
towards each other, they provide the impression of symmetrical balance.
3. INTERPRETATION
✓What is the artist trying to communicate?
The artist's goal is to bring attention to a broader issue of poverty. Despite poverty
and a lack of proper housing, we are nonetheless able to share things equally among
those who need the same things, like how siblings share.
✓ What thoughts or feelings come up when you see the piece? Why?
(Express your opinion, but always back it up with evidence)
When I first saw the artwork, I assumed it was simply a typical identical twin
sleeping, and they are wonderful because they truly reflect what the title implies,
which is 'hating kapatid,' which for me signifies equality in sharing. However, I
wondered why both of them were struggling to squeeze themselves into one bench
and were also a bit skinny, so I assumed there was a deeper meaning behind this
artwork, and I was correct. According to Pintô (2022), this painting portrays poverty
and the crisis of a lack of suitable shelter, yet we still possess equality and are
resilient.

4. JUDGMENT
✓ Do you like it? Why or why not?
I admired it since it was so profound that it gave me shivers. We can't instantly
comprehend the true significance of the picture, but when you look at its deeper
meaning, you will be impressed and inspired to do nice things, especially for your
siblings and family. Looking at the artwork, we can see that it shouts emotion, and
gives me a sympathetic impression similar to what the two teenagers feel in their
situation. More specifically, the person's face is distorted, perhaps to make it a little
more expressive, as an artist's approach of conveying inner sentiments and
emotions.
✓Is the artwork effective? Explain.
Yes, since it displays what the title states and makes me wonder about its other
meaning. It's also captivating, clear, and well-designed artwork that conveys
meaning due to the content, elements he chose to express what he intended to
convey.
✓ What criteria do you think are important that helped you in concluding your
judgment?
The beauty, elements and principle, inherent meaning, uniqueness, details, and the
overall impression of the art.
