KEY TERMS

Aftercare-  Refers to the attention given to a sub at the end of a scene. Aftercare often
includes the Dom utilizing various pampering techniques on the sub in an effort to
provide comfort after having an intense experience that can leave them in a vulnerable
state.

Ageplay-  A type of role-playing in which a person pretends to be an age other than


their current biological age.

BDSM-  Stands for Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism, and


Masochism.

Ben Wa Balls-  Small, marble-sized balls, usually containing a small weight.  They are
inserted into the vagina and are used for sexual stimulation and to increase the
strength of the pelvic floor muscles.

Bondage-  The practice of consensually tying, binding, or restraining a partner for


erotic, aesthetic, or somatosensory stimulation.

Bottom-  A submissive partner in sexual play.

Brat-  A term to describe a sub who enjoys misbehaving to the Dom for attention and
punishments.

Collar-  (Noun) A symbol of ownership in a Dom/sub relationship, or just to be worn


when playing. (Verb) When a Dom commits to a lifelong relationship with a sub.

Consensual non-consent-  A mutual agreement to be able to act as if consent has been


waived. It is an agreement where comprehensive consent is given in advance, with the
intent of it being irrevocable under most circumstances.

Daddy/Mommy-  A caregiver role in an ageplay relationship, usually more parental,


nurturing, and loving than a typical Dominant.

Dominant (Dom/Domme)-  The person of power or authority/control in a BDSM


relationship, who practices some form of domination, whether it be physical, mental,
emotional, or a combination.

Dungeon-  A room or area that is used for a public or private play space to conduct
BDSM scene activities.

Edging-  The practice of taking yourself, or being brought, to the point of orgasm,
stopping before reaching the peak, and then repeating the process. It’s a way to
explore power exchange and makes the eventual orgasm much more powerful.

Gorean-  Fandom and role-play based on the philosophy of the lifestyle as described in
the fiction novels Chronicles of Gor, written by John Norman.  Fans particularly focus
on the Master/slave dynamic in sexual relationships and associated forms of female
submission as portrayed in the novels.

Kajira-  A female slave or slave-girl in John Norman’s fiction novels, Chronicles of Gor.

Kinbaku-  A sexual, artistic form of rope tying.

Kink-  A term for non-vanilla sexual behavior.

Limits-  Issues or activities that participants in a play scene or relationship feel


strongly about, usually referring to prohibited activities.

Little-  Submissive ageplayers who mix childlike innocence with naughty sexual
curiosity.  They usually require a softer approach to be dominated.

Masochist-  An individual who enjoys receiving certain types of pain from their
partner, usually in a sexual context.

Master/Mistress-  A person who receives complete control over the life of a sub, and all
responsibilities that come with it.  They provide direction and structure in exchange
for service and obedience.

Rope Bunny-  Someone who likes to be tied up during bondage, using rope or other
restraints. They enjoy being totally at the mercy of their partner, whether for sexual
enhancement, art, or just for fun.

Sadist-  An individual who enjoys inflicting certain types of pain on their partner,
usually in a sexual context.

Safeword-  A codeword used as a prearranged and unambiguous signal to end an


activity between a Dom and sub.

Scene-  A BDSM activity or encounter involving one or more people; it may or may not
involve sexual activity. May also be referred to as “play” or “session.”

Shibari-  A general, artistic form of rope tying.

Slave-  A person who hands over complete control over their life to a Master. Serving
and obeying them s their primary focus.

SSC-  Stands for Safe, Sane, Consensual. The three principles that guide BDSM
relationships and activities.

Subdrop-  An experience with similar characteristics of depression that occurs after an
intense BDSM scene. It is caused by adrenaline and endorphin crashes.

Submissive (sub)-  A person that gives up some degree of authority/control to a Dom


either all the time or for the duration of a play scene.

Subspace-  A "natural high" that a sub gets during a scene or when being controlled.

Switch-  A switch is someone who participates in BDSM activities sometimes as a top


and other times as a bottom or (in the case of Dominance and submission) sometimes
as a Dom and other times as a sub.

TFTB-  Stands for Topping From The Bottom. An expression used to describe a
situation where a sub attempts to control the play, dynamic, or relationship from their
submissive position.

Top-  A dominant partner in sexual play.

TPE-  Stands for Total Power Exchange.  A type of relationship where the Dom has
complete control and authority over the sub in all areas and at all times, even when
they are not actively engaged in a scene.

Vanilla-   A subjective term used to describe “normal” or “bland” behavior or people


that are devoid of kink.
