FIRST QUARTER
MODULE NO. 2
TOPIC: MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS

I. INTRODUCTION

Multiplication is the same as repeated addition when you add the same
number again and again.

“Do you think this is true when we think about fractions?”

Multiplication of fractions is, in one way, simple: The rule of multiplying

across the numerators and the denominators is easy for students to learn.

II. OBJECTIVE/S
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
 identify the steps how to multiply fraction by another fraction/ whole numbers
by a fraction and mixed numbers by another mixed numbers;
 multiply fraction by another fraction/ whole numbers by a fraction and mixed
number by another mixed number correctly; and
 solve problems involving multiplication of fractions.

III. CONCEPT SUMMARY

 There are three steps to multiply fractions:
Step 1: Multiply the numerator.
Step 2: Multiply the denominator.
Step 3: Simplify the fraction whenever necessary.

IV. BRIEF DISCUSSION

1. Concept Development

Multiplication is one of the simplest operations you can carry out on

fractions, because you don't need to worry or get anxious about whether the
fractions have the same denominator or not; because you just simply need
to multiply the numerators together, multiply the denominators together and
simplify the resulting fraction if need be. However, there are a few things to
watch out for, including mixed numbers.

A. Multiplication of Fraction by a Fraction

To multiply fraction and another fraction, you need to follow these steps:
Step 1: Multiply the numerator.
Step 2: Multiply the denominator.
Step 3: Simplify the fraction whenever necessary.

have pet dogs, 2 / 5 also have a fish. What fraction of her friends have both
a dog and a fish?

Solutions:
Step 1: Multiply the numerator. 1 x 2 = 2
Step 2: Multiply the denominator. 2 x 5 = 10

B. Multiplication of Fraction by a Whole Number

To solve for the product of a fraction and a whole number, you need to
follow these steps:
Step 1: Make the whole number a fraction by making its denominator
equal to 1.
Step 2: Multiply the numerator.
Step 3: Multiply the denominator.
Step 4: Simplify the fraction whenever necessary.

Example 4: Mother ordered 8 whole boxes of pizza for her daughter’s

birthday. Only 3 / 4 of the pizza were eaten by the visitors. How many
boxes of pizza were consumed?

3
Equation: 8×
4

Solutions:
Make the whole number a fraction by making its denominator equal to 1.
Step 1: Multiply the numerator. 8 x 3 = 24
Step 2: Multiply the denominator. 1 x 4 = 4
24
Step 3: Simplify.
4
Since 24 can be divided by 4, 6 boxes

C. Multiplication of Mixed Number by a Mixed Number
To solve for the product of a mixed numbers, you need to follow these
steps:
Step 1: Change the mixed number to improper fraction.
Step 2: Multiply the numerator.
Step 3: Multiply the denominator.
Step 4: Simplify the fraction whenever necessary and change the
improper fraction to a mixed number.
