    A. Answer these questions in one or two sentences
    each:
    1. Why was the 'holy man' who gave Santosh’s mother his
    blessings surprised?
    Answer- The holy man was surprised because Santosh's grandmother
    wanted blessings for a daughter.

    2. Give an example to show that even as a young girl Santosh


    was not ready to accept anything unreasonable?
    Answer- As young girl Santosh used to wear shorts and not the
    traditional dresses that were meant for girls.

    3. Why was Santosh sent to the local school?


    Answer- She was sent to local school because of the prevailing custom
    in the family.
    4. When did she leave home for Delhi, and why?
    Answer- At the age of sixteen, Santosh left home for Delhi as she
    wanted to get a proper education.

    5. Why did Santosh's parents agreed to pay for her schooling


    in Delhi? What mental qualities of Santosh are brought into
    light by this incident?
    Answer- Her parents got ready to pay for her schooling as she informed
    them of her plans to earn money for her school fees by working part-
    time. This shows that she was a mentally strong girl fully dedicated to
    study.

    1. How did Santosh begin to climb mountains?


    Answer- Santosh joined Maharani College at Jaipur after passing the
    high school examination. When she got a room in Kasturba hostel that
    faced the Aravali hills, she used to watch villagers climbing up the hills
    from her room. One day, she joined some mountaineers who
    motivated her to climb.
    2. What incidents during the Everest expedition show
    Santosh's concern for her teammates?
    Answer- Santosh tried to save a fellow climber laying down at South
    Col, but she was unfortunately unsuccessful in saving him, she managed
    to save another climber Mohan Singh by sharing her oxygen cylinder
    with him.

    3. What shows her concern for the environment?


    Answer - Santosh was a fervent environmentalist also, as she collected
    and brought down 500 kg of garbage from the Himalayas.

    4. How does she describe her feelings at the summit of the


    Everest?
    Answer- She was very happy and felt proud as an Indian, at the summit
    of the Everest. She said that it took some time to understand the
    enormity of the moment, then she unfurled the tricolour on the
    summit. It was the spiritual moment for her.

    5. Santosh Yadav got into the record books both times she
    scaled Mount Everest? What was the reason for this?
    Answer- There were two reasons for this. First, she was the youngest
    woman who scaled Mount Everest. Second, she was the only woman
    who climbed Mount Everest twice.
