The Goo Goo Dolls:
adult contemporary
• Started in underground music and began in Buffalo, New York 1985
• Were opening for other bands
• By 1993 already had 14 top ten singles
• True Detective ad that was actually for a child toy called Goo Goo Doll
• Went through hard times and recent album released was fun to make
for them, like a tunnel when they reach the other side.
Yanni: Instrumental

• Self taught, composer, piano, and keyboard


• Started promoting his albums with small band
• Already nominated for first Grammy
• Was nominated for a second Grammy in 1992
• Very famous with first video album in 1994 in Athens, Greece
• Most of his work was on television and sporting events
• Played at Taj Mahal and Forbidden City in China,
• Viewed in many countries over 20 million people
Tupac: Rap/Hip Hop

• Born in Manhattan, New York, moved to Maryland became friends


with Jada Pinkett Smith, then California
• Recognition in 1991 from Digital Underground
• Starred in Juice and Poetic Justice
• Known for very strong poetic lyrics
• Untimely death in Las Vegas, Nevada shot four times while riding in
car later died from being in a coma
• Very popular even after his death
Utada Hikaru:

• American Japanese singer


• Mother was a singer/Father was a musician and producer
• Always traveled between New York and Tokyo
• By age 11 already written a song a English
• By age 13 had a solo album
• Wrote songs for Video Game Kingdom Hearts for PlayStation and also
wrote music in Japanese
Composition Histories

• “Here is Gone”
• Released in March of 2002
• Was the last song to be played on a Rock Band Station before they
were Adult Contemporary
• John Rzeznik talking to friend over the phone and asked if he should
take the cords either high or low and the friend said low so he did and
that is why the song came to be.
“The Storm”

• This composition from Yanni is actually an original piece from Antonio


Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons
• He used solo violin pieces but also added some techno type beats to
the piece
“Brenda’s Got A Baby”

• This song that Tupac wrote was actually inspired by a newspaper


article that covered a story by a twelve year old girl that ended up
pregnant from a cousin of hers and she threw the baby in the trash
can.
• In the song he also covers topics about teen pregnancy and poverty
and a little on government assistance.
“Simple and Clean”
• This song became really popular due to it becoming the main theme
song to the video game series for Kingdom Hearts for PlayStation

themselves than what they thought
• 1:09 a little before the chorus begins there is similar phrases for the other chorus’s,
Chorus starts tempo goes up when it hits chorus
• 1:29 the tempo slows back down again
• 1:36 verse 2 begins very different from verse 1 almost saying like he is not the solution to
any problems

• 2:33 there is a bridge talks about the past and explains why he did not stay

• 1:37 the harp plucks all strings very fast to make one big bang

phrases then second vocalists are repeating what the first vocalists just said
showed imitation between singers
• 0:38 Tupac starts singing, this song has one long verse with no chorus but
repeated phrases towards the end.
• Texture is monophonic and the form is repeated multiple times towards
the end by both vocalists.
• 2:37 the vocalists begin their verse and the second vocalists are saying
their verse and interlude with imitation
• 3:52 coda ends with drums and long vocal pitch.
Simple and Clean:
• 0:03 introduction begins but this intro will also be the chorus in the song repeated numerous times later
• 0:25 there is a very silent pause nothing playing as if the song has stopped like a coda sounds like an ending
• 0:28 verse 1 begins and explains about not wanting to meet the father from the other persons view
• 1:11 the chorus begins, there is like this high pitch for a few seconds then back to normal
• 1:39 verse 2 beings, tempo is calm and sounds smooth different text from verse 1
• 2:06 this is the second half of verse 1 and it is very similar with only about two words changed from meet father to walk on water

• 2:44 verse 3 begins and this is different text from first 2 this verse is repeated now frequently and sticks with it along with the
repeat of chorus
