BRIEF HISTORY

Mindanao is named after the

Maguindanaons, who historically comprised
the largest Sultanate, and evidence from
maps made during the 17th and 18th
centuries suggests that the name was used
to refer to the island by natives at the time.

Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, and Zamboanga

LITERATURE
MINDANAO LITERATURE

Each Muslim cultural community has its own collection of folk literature, which

typically depicts themes that are unique and peculiar, but are united by Islamic faith.

Its oral literary forms may be thematic, hortatory, entertaining, instructive, or

informative.

Mindanao Muslim folk literature, like that of other Filipino groups that follow oral

tradition, is rich in folktales, myths, legends, poems, epics, ballads, riddles, and

proverbs.
MINDANAO LITERATURE

Folktales are referred to differently depending on the ethno-linguistic group and place

of origin:

Kana-kana (from Jama Mapun and Sama) Tudtol (from Iranon)

Totol (from Maranao) Oman-oman (from Davaoeños)
Katakata (from Tausug) Tudtolan (from Maguindanao)
CHARACTERISTICS

Every ethnic group has its own way of naming folk literature, such as ballads,

proverbs, and riddles.

The majority of ballads are historical in nature, depicting heroic deeds of famous

people.

At the moment, Filipinos do not have access to the textual materials of Mindanao's oral

literature.
Themes in modern Mindanao literature include war and conflict, the quest for

peace, social inequality, landlessness, love of one's land, and others.
