ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the effect of hypotherapy to overcome anxiety facing the

birth of the first child. The subjects in this study were four mothers with their first child
pregnancy, the education level of pregnant women was at least high school with the

third trimester of pregnancy and before delivery. HAMILON RATING SCALE FOR
ANXIETY is used as a screening to reveal the presence or absence of anxiety disorders.

Quantitative data collection method was carried out using HAMILON RATING FOR
ANXIETY before giving therapy three times and after giving hypnotherapy (P-0.046

<0.05; Z=-2, 032). This shows that hypnotherapy is quite influential in reducing anxiety if
it is applied continuously. The decrease in anxiety occurred after pottset and follow-up

because the treatment was stopped. The role of health workers can be empowered to
provide simple relaxation hypnosis techniques to reduce anxiety in the first pregnant

women before delivery.

INTRODUCTION

Pregnancy and childbirth are one of the chain of events in individual development
from birth to death. Every change in the individual is a stressor in a person's life. For

some women, pregnancy and childbirth are minimal stressors and for the most part the
joys of life. The ability to deal with the situation depends on age, education, maturity,

personality, previous pregnancy and childbirth and economic emotional state.

Feelings of anxiety often accompany pregnancy, especially a mother who is

mentally unstable. Anxiety reaches a climax at the time of delivery. Pain during labor has
long been a topic of conversation for women. Therefore, many prospective young

mothers face childbirth with feelings of anxiety (Maramis, 2009).

Many efforts have been made to overcome the anxiety problems of mothers who
are about to give birth. Starting medically and various psychological therapies. One

method that can be used is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is an approach that is often

used to treat anxiety. Such as handling anxiety by using systematic dissentation or

progressive muscle relaxation so that pregnant women will be instructed to relax from
physical complaints and ignore anxiety stimuli.

Hypnotherapy: The general view of hypnosis is that hypnosis is a trance state in which

the individual loses his logical abilities and experiences changes in sensations,
perceptions, thoughts or behavior. This situation can arise naturally or can be generated

formally by the therapist, in collaboration with the client or on the client himself (self-
hypnosis). While there are many different inductions, most of which are different, most

hypnosis is related to suggestions for relaxation, calm, and wellness. Instructions to

imagine or think about a pleasant experience can also be done in hypnotic induction.

Although people respond to hypnosis in different ways to varying degrees, they usually
describe the experience of hypnosis as very pleasant. A person's ability to experience

hypnotic suggestions can be hampered by fear and anxiety often arises from
misconceptions obtained from the mass media. People who are hypnotized remain

aware of who they are and where they are, and they usually remember what happened
during hypnosis (Palmer, 2010).
Induction methods in hypnotherapy are generally divided into two categories:

formal induction methods and naturalistic or eriksonian methods, but basically the two
approaches are not different and many clinicians use both approaches. There are a

number of Techniques for hypnosis, but most include the following three main
components; relaxation (suggestion of relaxation, peace, tranquility), imagination, (use

of guided images, e.g. favorite place, pleasant sight) action (e.g., eye gaze, raising of
hand).

According to Palmer (2010), the stages of hypnosis therapy are:

a. Preinduction

Preinduction is also known as the preparatory stage, which is the initial stage when the
client meets the hypnotherapist, the client will get an explanation of the process and

benefits of hypnosis.

b. Suggestibility test

The suggestibility test is used to determine the level of suggestibility whether the client

includes physical suggestibility or emotional suggestibility.

c. Induction

Induction is a process that leads the client to a hypnotic trance, which is a state of
consciousness when the critical part of the mind is conscious. inactive, so the client will

be receptive to the suggestions given.

d. Deepening

Deepening is the process of deepening hypnosis. In this process, several elevator

techniques can be used.

DISCUSSION

The subject's level of anxiety before being given hypnotherapy was in the
mild category and after giving hypnotherapy it was still in the mild category
but there was a decrease in the number of anxiety scales. Based on the
results of this study, hypnotherapy is quite helpful in reducing anxiety
before the birth of the first child. The techniques used are breathing,
muscle and body relaxation, visualization of a fun place to communicating
with babies. Women who are pregnant for the first time tend to be more
anxious than women who have experienced childbirth. Pregnant women for
the first time often have thoughts full of fear, disturbing because of the
anxiety they get about how the process of giving birth will be. Various
questions arise, whether there will be pain, fear of not being able to push,
fear of stitches, whether the baby can be born safely often disturbs the
psyche of the mother giving birth (Kartono, 1992). With hypnotherapy
methods can help pregnant women to strengthen their belief that they will
be able to get through delivery smoothly and quietly as expected. This
exercise helps pregnant women with natural relaxation to reduce tension
and help overcome anxiety ranging from muscle and body relaxation,
visualization techniques provide a comfortable place, communicating with
body members and communicating with babies regularly will make body
and psychological conditions more comfortable and help reduce pain when
the brain has reached alpha waves. At this time the body will release
serotonin and endorphins so that pregnant women will be in a relaxed state
without anxiety and tension (Asmarany, 2012). The researcher assumes that
the factors that influence there is no decrease in anxiety after treatment
and follow-up because hypnotherapy has been stopped and besides that's
according to Previous research suggests that in general, mothers with their
first child are more prone to experience anxiety because they have not had
previous childbirth experience.Based on Heriani's research (2016), pregnant
women in the third trimester feel anxious because the time for delivery is
getting closer. Pregnant women tend to feel anxious, restless and afraid to
face childbirth due to lack of knowledge in dealing with childbirth.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of the analysis of research that has been done, it can be concluded
that hypnotherapy can overcome anxiety in dealing with the delivery of the first child.

The role of the therapist has a contribution to the occurrence of an increase and
decrease in anxiety for pregnant women with their first child. It is hoped that women

who are pregnant with their first child will apply simple hypnotherapy methods in
everyday life when facing problems to prevent continuing anxiety, with relaxation and

positive self-suggestion continuously, it can maintain the quality of life and have a
positive impact on the development of mothers and babies. especially able to pass labor

smoothly and calmly. Further researchers are advised to apply hypnotherapy to research
subjects with a larger number so that they can compare and find out the variation of

changes in each subject because it is estimated that pregnant women with their first
child are susceptible to psychological problems.
