CABLE TRAY STYLE

5. CABLE TRAY WIDTHS

Pilgrim cable trays are available in all the CSA widths. It must be clearly understood,
however, that regardless of the cable tray width, the design loading is still the
principle governing factor. So, wider trays and deeper trays can hold more cables
but cannot exceed their design load.
Tray widths are measured based on inside nominal dimensions:
15, 22, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 cm.

6. CABLE TRAY LENGTHS

Pilgrim offers trays in the following lengths: 3 and 6 m.

RADIUS OF FITTINGS
Selection of fitting radius is governed by cable bending radius and also space
considerations (eg. building layouts).
Standard fitting radii are 30, 60 and 90 cm nominal.

PILGRIM CABLE TRAY SPECIFICATIONS

TM

Technical
Data
Part 1 General

1.01 Section Includes

A. This specification covers continuous, complete, metallic and non–metallic systems of
ladder, ventilated, solid bottom or channel (also referred to as instrumentation) cable
tray, intended for, but not limited to, the support of power, control, and signal cables.

1.02 References
The cable tray system shall be supplied in accordance with the CSA Standard C22.2
No. 126.1-98, “Cable Tray Systems”, latest revision thereto, except where requirements
are changed or exceeded by this specification and/or the drawings in which case
this specification and drawings shall govern.

[Thomas & Betts strongly recommends the inclusion of the following information in
your standard specification]

Cable Tray Connectors

Connector plate flat against the outside of the C-Shape siderail. Resistance of connector
plate shall not exceed .00033 ohms. Connector shall be so designed as to allow for
minimum installation labour. This system shall include 4 hole connector plates with
standard zinc plated hardware.

Smooth edges
The inside of cable trays shall have smooth edges free from burrs or any projections
that can cause personal injury or damage cable insulation.

Supports
All trays and fittings shall be supported in accordance to CSA C22.2 No. 126.1-98.

Grounding
Cable trays can be considered grounded if the provisions of C.E.C. Rule 12-2210
are followed.

STEEL CABLE TRAY

Technical

Carbon steel (structural quality) used for cable trays shall be protected against corrosion
Data

by one of the following processes:

A. Pre-galvanized (also referred to as mill galvanized) in accordance with ASTM

Publication No. A653-98 G90 coating.
B. Hot–dip galvanized after fabrication [HDGAF] in accordance with CSA G164 or ASTM
Publication #A123-97. Cable tray will have an average zinc coating weight of 1.50 oz.
per square foot (2.55 mils average thickness per side). Cable tray shall be thoroughly
cleaned, fluxed and immersed into a bath of molten zinc to form a metallurgically
bonded zinc coating. The cable tray shall be slowly withdrawn from the zinc bath to
ensure a relatively uniform coating thickness of zinc and total product coverage.
Stainless steel cable trays shall be manufactured using one of these types:
304, 316, or 316L.

Construction
Ladder Trays
Straight sections to be manufactured in 3 metre and 6 metre lengths. Side rails shall have
a “C” configuration [flange facing inward] with the upper flange rolled downwards for
added rigidity as well as ensuring smooth edges for the protection of personnel and of
the cable jacket.

Ventilated Tray
To be manufactured in 3 metre and 6 metre lengths. Side rails shall have a “C”
configuration with the upper flange rolled downwards for added rigidity. Transverse
elements shall have a maximum of 100 mm (4”) open spacing measured parallel to
the tray siderail as per CSA C22.2 No.126.1-98.

Solid Tray
To be manufactured in 3 metre and 6 metre lengths. Side rails shall have a “C” configu-
ration with the upper flange rolled downwards for added rigidity. The tray bottom for
6 metre shall be solid sheet welded below supporting rungs on 18” rung spacing.
Cable clamps and/or cable ties should be accommodated without drilling or tapping.
Note for CSA Class C1, a one piece solid tray is available.

Coatings (Optional – do not include in specification if not required)

For additional corrosion protection Cable tray shall be coated using one of the following:
A. Epoxy Powder coating to be applied on cable trays after fabrication. Coating shall
be applied uniformly and be no less than 2 mils thickness. The coating should be
durable against abrasions and offer proper adhesion to the substrate.
B. PVC coating to be applied to cable trays after fabrication. Coating shall be
applied uniformly and be 15 mils (+or – 5 mils) in thickness. Cable tray shall be
thoroughly cleaned, primed, and the coating shall be durable against abrasions
and offer proper adhesion to the substrate.
