PARKING STUDY

OBJECTIVE:
To obtain data on the extent of usage of parking spaces.

INTRODUCTION:
Parking survey is to collect data on the amount, type and location of space actually or
potentially available for parking in an area. The area surveyed should first be delineated. The survey
will include counts of parked vehicles at regular intervals through a period, covering both the
morning and evening peak period, and the parking accumulation and turnover.
The survey can be done on both on-street and off-street parking. The general methodology
for both surveys is similar though minor details can be different. The method consists of making
periodic observations of parked vehicles on each car park. For off street observations, the entire
parking space can be parked or alternatively the entrances and exits may be observed continuously.
APPARATUS:

1. Tally counter
2. Data collection forms
3. Safety vest

PROCEDURES:

1. Identify the selected parking area.

2. Determine the total of parking bay of the area.
3. Make an initial count of vehicle already parked in the area.
4. Identify the entry and exit point of the area.
5. Establish counting station at both entry and exit point.
6. Count the number of vehicles coming in and out of the area for every five minutes interval using
the tally counter.
7. Record the count in TABLE 1: IN – OUT SURVEY DATA FORM
8. Calculate the Accumulation, Occupancy and Parking Load for each time interval.
9. Calculate the Total Parking Load of the area.

REFLECTION

Write a reflection that explain what did you learn as a result from your practical work. A reflection
mustbe included after each practical work that you did. Place this reflection in your lab sheet,
directly after you completed your practical work.
