Exercise No. 1 Microscope and its Uses

WORKSHEET

Instruction: Answer all activities and guide questions in this worksheet. Submit your
outputs in PDF file to any online platforms like facebook, messenger, e-learning portal, or
to the following emails presented below. Make sure to rename the file as:

Activity 1: (10 points)

Label the images provided below. Write your answers in the table below the image.

Figure 1. A Monocular Compound Light Microscope.

Activity 2:
(4 points)
Compute the total magnification of the following:
1. Pediculus humanus capitis viewed under HPO
(40x) Given:
Actual size of Pediculus humanus capitis = 2mm
Size of the image = 50mm
Magnification= 50mm/2mm
Magnification= 25x
Total Magnification = 25 x 40 = 1000x

2. Itch-mite viewed under LPO (10x) Given:

Actual size of Itch-mite = 2mm
Size of the image = 40mm
Magnification= 40mm/2mm
Magnification= 20x
Total Magnification = 20 x 10= 200x

(3 points)
1. Choose a macro specimen that can be found in your home.
2. Draw your specimen in the box provided below and compute the magnification of the
image/drawing. (Show your computation).

Illustration size:
6cm/60mm Mungbean seed viewed under SPO (4x) Formula:
Magnification = size of the illustration______________________
Actual size: 0.2cm/2mm Actual size of the specimen
Given:

Actual size of Mungbean seed = 2mm

Size of the image = 60mm
Magnification= 60mm/2mm
Magnification= 30x
Total Magnification = 30 x 4= 120x

Total Magnification: 120 x

Activity 3. (3 points)
1. Get water from a pond, stream, or any body of water. Try to use any available lens in
your home that can magnify the possible contents of the water.
2. Describe everything you see. If you cannot see anything, then discuss why and what do
you need to visualize this. Write your answer in the space below.
Answer:
Although observing the water from our naked eye we can conclude that it is clean
because of the translucent appearance, but as I used magnifying tools, the water contains
small particles in irregular shapes thar are floating around, and it is not at all 100% clean.

3. Why are microscopes necessary in biological investigations? (2 points)

Answer: Because of microscopes, scientists are able to understand biological beings
which cannot be seen through naked eyes. And studying this microscopic organism
sometime helps us to unravel mysteries of the world.

4. What will happen if you do not look at the body tube's side when focusing on a particular
specimen using the coarse adjustment knob? (1 point) Answer: Slides and lenses will
crack.

5. Why is water important in doing a wet mount? (2 points)

Answer: The water improves the image quality and also supports the specimen
