AC7052 - Accounting and Finance for Managers
Coursework Assignment 2021/22

The performance of students is assessed by the combination of assessment

methods as appropriate to the level and learning outcome of the assessment
protocol.

The assessment regime consists of two components.

The first component is a group presentation within a fixed time limit of problem-
based nature. I recommend 3-4 students to work in one group. The first group
presentation assignment constitutes 30% of the assessment for this module.

The second component is individual written report which is designed to test

student’s knowledge and understanding of primary theories, concepts and their
application. The second assessment will include a short reflective statement
of personal learning and the contribution made by the module to the student’s
professional development. The second individual coursework assignment
constitutes 70% of the assessment for this module. Students are required to write
an essay/report by completing the following questions.

1. Group Coursework Assignment (30%) – 3000 words (10/ 08/ 2022)

Using fundamental analysis and from an investor’s viewpoint analyse the financial
performance of your chosen company over the last 3 years, e.g. a close reading
of your chosen company’s annual report.

The following five bullet points are compulsory to answer, but not limited. I expect
you could shed more light on your analysis based on what you learned in the class.

a. Differentiate Assets, Liabilities and Equities. Why are these important to an

organization? Explain this using the financial information provided in the selected
company’s annual report.

b. What is agency theory? What are reasons for the agency problem? Explain the costs
related to this problem? What measures an organization can take to overcome this
issue?
2
c. Using the financial ratios, analyse a company’s performance, efficiency liquidity and
gearing. And provide a recommendation about the status of the company based on
the analysed ratios from the perspective of an investor.

d. Analyse the cashflow statement of the selected company and identify any issues
related to the cash flow and provide recommendations to overcome identified
issues.

2. Individual Coursework Assignment (70%) – 4000 words (29/ 09/ 2022)

Using fundamental analysis and compare and contrast the financial performance of a chosen
company (different from the company chosen for the 1st assignment) over the last 3
years, e.g., a close reading of your chosen company’s annual report. Prepare a report to
address the following areas.

Part A

a. From the perspective of shareholders or managers and local communities or

suppliers assess the usefulness [Only two stakeholders from the above pairs] of
the information in the annual report for the stakeholders you have chosen. Analyse
based on the financial information provided in the annual report.

b. Comment on whether your chosen company is a limited company (provide the reason)
and discuss how the income statement and statement of financial position of the
selected company differ from other types of organization.

c. Why working capital (WC) is important for an organization? What recommendations

that you can provide to improve the working capital of the selected company? What’s
the difference between WC and working capital cycle (WCC)? Analyse and identify any
issues related to the WCC of the selected company for last three years.

d. Analyse the sources of finances (internal and external) of the selected company of last
three years. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of the sources that the
company has used during last three years.

Part B
Assume that the selected company is planning to start a project worth more than 25M which
has a lifetime of 7 years. Prepare a cashflow forecast of this project. And based on your
forecast prepare the following. (Assume that 50% of the investment is from borrowings)
a. Accounting rate of return
b. Payback period
c. Net Present Value
d. Internal Rate of Return

Based on your calculations, analyse the project’s performance and recommend the company
about their project. (Consider the cost of capital is the same as the loan interest rate)
