Apple Inc.

Main Events
Apple company has had quite an impact in the world of technology and was among the main
participants in the digital revolutions. Here, we focus on the main events that impacted the
Apples Inc. (A., 2015), which addresses the history of Apple Inc. groups them into seven
periods. We shall draw our main events from the seven periods as follows.

Founding and incorporation


This period was the most significant in the milestone of Apple company. During the year
1976 on April 1st commonly known as fool’s day, was the day Apple was established by
Steve Jobs, Stephen Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. The main events during this period were
selling Apple I and Apple II computer kits. By the end of this period Apple company had
staff of computer design and production line, and had also introduced Apple III in attempt to
compete with IBM.

Success in Macintosh
Apple had been working on the Apple Lisa project and became a success in 1983 where
became the most sold PC with a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Although it became a
commercial failure due it overpricing and limited software titles. This then led to it
introducing of Macintosh PC which was the first computer without a programming language
in 1984.

Decline, restructuring, acquisition


In 1990, Macintosh LC was introduced which featured an expansion slot for the Apple II to
help Apple II user migrate to Macintosh. This was followed by Apple II exiting the market in
1993.
Apple later in 1994 had an alliance with IBM and Motorola called the AIM, which had a goal
of creating a new computing platform called the PowerPC Reference Platform. The platform
was aimed at using IBM and Motorola hardware coupled with Apple software. Apple
company later introduced the power Macintosh, the first computer to use Motorola’s
PowerPC processor.
During this period, the Apple company introduces the Apple online store in 1997, which was
tied to a build-order manufacturing strategy. One year down they introduced the iMac, the all
in-one computer reminiscing the Macintosh 128K. the iMac features a new technology design
and sold almost 800,000 units in the first five months.

Return to profitability
Apple opened its first retail store in 2001 in Virginia and California, on the same year
October 23rd, it debuted the famous portable iPod portable audio player. The iPod was first
sold in November 1st and became a huge success after selling over 100 million units withing
the first six months.
Two years after the iPod debut, Apple iTunes was introduced with integration of the iPod.
The iTunes was an online service that allowed users to download songs at $0.99 each. This
led to iTunes store becoming the lead market in music service with over 5 billion downloads
by the year 2008.

Success with mobile devices


Apple launched the App Store in the year 2008, with the aim of selling third party
applications to iPad Touch and iPhone. Within a month Apple had sold over 60 million
applications and had registered average revenue of $1 million a day.
Apple released iPhone 4 which introduce video calling and multitasking and a new
uninsulated stainless-steel design that acted as the phone’s antenna.

Steve Job’s death


During this period (2011-2012), Apple released the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 which featured
improved cameras, an intelligent software assistant named Siri and cloud -sources data with
iCloud. These launches were successful with iPhone 5 being Apple’s biggest iPhone launch
with over 2 million pre-orders and sales of 3 million iPads in three days following the launch
of iPad mini and fourth generation iPads.

Apple rivals and competitors


Apple faces strong competition and rivalry force. This means that Apple competitors have
strong influence among each other. It competes with other hardware and software suppliers
such as Google, Microsoft, and Samsung (Mavrick, 2015). Here we further divide the
competitors based on the products they bring to the technology market; the smartphone
market and computer market.

The computer markets


Many of Apple primary competitors are computer manufacturers. in terms of global market
share, Apple was fourth with 8.6% as of the third quarter of 2021. Its competitors claimed
large shares such as Lenovo, at 23.7%, HP, at 20.9%, and Dell, at 18.1% (Who Are Apple’s

Lenovo

Has its headquarters in China but has its operational headquarters in North Carolina. Lenovo
produces PCs, mobile phones and in this way, it competes with Apple in both phones and
Computers. Being on Fortune 500 and considered top brand in the world, Lenovo gives tough
times to Apple Inc. in laptops and tablets in outclass products line like ThinkPad, Yoga and
many convertible tablets models.

Dell

Dell is a multinational computer company that deals in manufacturing, selling, repairing of


computer and related parts (Farooq, 2019). This rivalry started many years ago when Dell
introduces a competitive product Dell DJ and became one of the early competitors of iPod.
We can see the launch by Dell a few years back, the XPS laptops that compete with
MacBook Pro.

HP

Being among the top market share, HP is a great competitor to Apple Inc. HP Inc. is
providing quality products with affordable prices. On the other hand, Apple is providing high
quality products with premium pricing. Its products such as spectre and MacBook are huge
competitors in the market (Farooq, 2019).

Microsoft

Being an American technology company and worlds giant in revolutionizing the information
technology in the past decades, Microsoft windows product line in one major competitors of
Apple Inc. the MSFT product include windows os, office, gaming Xbox, surface and mobiles.
It competes with Apple in many segments such as operating systems, computers and
smartphones.

Smartphone manufacturers
iPhone is among the most significant products of Apple Inc. apple, just like the computer
market, does not dominate the market. Apples worldwide share of the smartphone market is
about 14% as of third quarter of 2021 (Farooq, 2019). The rival company on the other hand,
Samsung holds 20% of the global market.

Samsung
It is south Korea’s biggest company. Samsung has dominated in Asia and worldwide in terms
of being the largest most profitable companies. Its product, the Samsung galaxy and note
series have been responsible for reductions in iPhone sales for many years.
