Data:
• Nitration temperature should not exceed 40⁰C during mononitration to
keep by-product formation to a minimum (Ruhweza, 2018).
• The following reactions occur inside the reactor (Ruhweza, 2018):
1. Nitration of Toluene
𝐶7 𝐻8 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂3 → 𝐶7 𝐻7 𝑁𝑂2 + 𝐻2 𝑂
2. Oxidation of Toluene
𝐶7 𝐻8 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂3 → 𝐶7 𝐻8 𝑂 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂2
3. Dissociation of Nitrous Acid
2𝐻𝑁𝑂2 → 𝑁𝑂 + 𝑁𝑂2 + 𝐻2 𝑂
• A slight excess of nitric acid (1.4%) is maintained during nitration
(Ruhweza, 2018).
• 8.7% of toluene in the feed remains unreacted (Ruhweza, 2018).
• The selectivity for the nitration of toluene is 99.3% (Ruhweza, 2018).
• No DNT is formed in the reactor (Ruhweza, 2018).
811
Technological Institute of the Philippines
• The amount of nitrous acid leaving the reactor is 36.5% of the nitrous
acid fed (Ruhweza, 2018).

• The temperature of the mixed acid is maintained at 60⁰C to prevent the
decomposition of nitric acid (Liu, 2019).
• Nitration is carried out using nitrating acid (a mixture of sulfuric acid
(usually 85–98 wt. %) and nitric acid (approximately 65 wt. % or 98 wt-
%) (Falcke et al., 2017).
• A slight excess of nitric acid (1.4%) is maintained during nitration
(Ruhweza, 2018).
• The ratio of sulfuric acid to nitric acid in the nitrating acid is 2:1
(Ruhweza, 2018).

Data:
• Nitration temperature should not exceed 70⁰C during dinitration to keep
by-product formation to a minimum (Ruhweza, 2018).
• The following reactions occur inside the reactor (Ruhweza, 2018):
1. Nitration of Toluene
𝐶7 𝐻8 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂3 → 𝐶7 𝐻7 𝑁𝑂2 + 𝐻2 𝑂
2. Nitration of Mononitrotoluene
𝐶7 𝐻7 𝑁𝑂2 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂3 → 𝐶7 𝐻6 𝑁2 𝑂4 + 𝐻2 𝑂
3. Nitration of Monitrotoluene
𝐶7 𝐻6 𝑁2 𝑂4 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂3 → 𝐶7 𝐻5 𝑁3 𝑂6 + 𝐻2 𝑂
4. Nitration of Cresol
𝐶7 𝐻8 𝑂 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂3 → 𝐶7 𝐻7 𝑁𝑂3 + 𝐻2 𝑂
5. Nitration of Nitrocresol
𝐶7 𝐻7 𝑁𝑂3 + 𝐻𝑁𝑂3 → 𝐶7 𝐻6 𝑁2 𝑂5 + 𝐻2 𝑂
6. Dissociation of Nitrous Acid
2𝐻𝑁𝑂2 → 𝑁𝑂 + 𝑁𝑂2 + 𝐻2 𝑂
• Unreacted toluene from R-101 is completely converted to MNT
(Ruhweza, 2018).
• 99.7% of total MNT is converted into DNT and 0.02% of DNT is
converted into TNT (Ruhweza, 2018).
• 30.9% of cresol is converted into nitrocresol and 7.0% of nitrocresol is
converted into dinitrocresol (Ruhweza, 2018).

Data:
• The reactor operates at 120⁰C and 50 bar (Barankin et al, 2004).
• The catalytic hydrogenation of DNT to produce TDA occurs according
to the reaction (Barankin et al, 2004).
𝐶7 𝐻6 𝑁2 𝑂4 + 6𝐻2 → 𝐶7 𝐻10 𝑁2 + 4𝐻2 𝑂
• The selectivity for hydrogenation of DNT to TDA is using a palladium
catalyst is 100% (Barankin et al, 2004).
• The degree of conversion of DNT is 99.83% (Barankin et al, 2004).
• Hydrogen is fed to the reactor at 150% of its stoichiometric requirement
(Barankin et al, 2004).
• The ratio of methanol to DNT is 4:1 (Barankin et al, 2004).

Data:
• The industrial manufacture of phosgene is based on the following
reaction (Ryan et al., 1996):
𝐶𝑂 + 𝐶𝑙2 → 𝐶𝑂𝐶𝑙2
• The reaction occurs in the presence of an activated charcoal catalyst
(Ryan et al., 1996).
• The reactor operates at atmospheric pressure (Ryan et al., 1996).
• Using a 2.5% molar excess of carbon monoxide in the temperature
range of 50-200⁰C, the phosgene product can be made substantially free
of dichlorine (Ryan et al., 1996).
• Complete conversion of dichlorine is ensured (Ryan et al., 1996).
• The ratio of phosgene to TDA in R-106 is 7:1 (Bi et al., 2013).

• Phosgene is diluted to 25% by mixing with air (Ryan et al., 1996).
• The average relative humidity in Biñan, Laguna is 80% (weather-

• Phosgene is neutralized completely by sodium hydroxide according to
the reaction (Ryan et al., 1996):
𝐶𝑂𝐶𝑙2 + 4𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 → 2𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙 + 𝑁𝑎2 𝐶𝑂3 + 2𝐻2 𝑂
• The composition of phosgene in the exit gas stream must be less than
