Learning the Principles

Keep it simple, don’t over-complicate things,

but don’t neglect them eaither. Awareness is
everything when we are stewarding prophecy.

Whenever we receive prophetic words or exhortations personally, we

have a responsibility to weigh them. It’s wise to weight them with
prophets, and I would highly recommend that, but we can learn to
process these words simply in circumstances where prophets aren’t
immediately available.
There are four keys within every word given that we should learn to
recognize and weigh out. Those four keys are:

1. Times & Seasons

2. Signs That Bear Witness
3. Conditions
4. Provisions

Before applying these principles and learning to identify the keys, let’s
take a look at the def initions.

Page 3
The Prophetic Gifts - Mini-Course

1. Times & Seasons – Hebrew “epoch” - a set time, time,

season. Root word = “zaman”, which means: to appoint a
time, be f ixed, be appointed.

These “times and seasons” have been appointed and “f ixed”

by God within his predestined will, and are not changeable
or relevant to the conditions being met by men and women
through f ree will.

2. Signs – Hebrew “owth”, describing a “sign, signal, a

distinguishing mark, banner, remembrance, miraculous
sign, omen, warning, token, ensign, standard, miracle,
or proof ”. The root word here is “uwth”, which is a verb
meaning “to consent, agree”.

When God provides us with these “signs”, it not only reveals

his supernatural power, strength, or wisdom, but also conf irms
his agreement with us for the purpose he has in every time
and season. It’s great to know the times and seasons, but it’s
even better to bear witness with God’s signs that conf irm his
consent or agreement within those times and seasons so that
we know for sure that we are not laboring in vane!

Page 4

3. Condition requirement – “Prerequisites or requirements

that must be met before accessing supernatural provisions;
often given through exhortations or prophetic utterances
f rom the Lord”.

All throughout the Word, God reveals opportunities to his

people through prophetic or exhortive utterances that come
through his ministers. Sometimes these words come through
ministers, such as prophets or apostles. We can also see a
number of these conditions revealed through holy angels,
ministering spirits of the Lord.

4. Provisions – “Promised outcomes or results of ebeying

God’s conditional requirements pertaining to each
individual utterance, prophetic word, or exhortation.
Something provided as a benef it for the church, or a
disadvantage or blockage against an enemy.”

Often throughout scripture, God gives various conditions to

man in order to stir our hearts toward his will and his heart. By
abiding in his instructive utterances, following his leading, and
submitting ourselves to trust him in all we do, we are lavished
with provisions in response to obedience. This is not merely
for the sake of salvation, but rather for the purposes of proving
his own faithfulness to us time and time again as he fulf ills the
words he gives, and completes our obedience in him through
that glorious we relationship we develop with his word.

Page 5
The Prophetic Gifts - Mini-Course

It may seem too analytical to some

believers to begin looking for these
indicators when observing prophetic words.

It’s not.

Many would rather hear a word and trust

that it will come to pass regardless of
any level of natural comprehension or
partnership with the word.

Although there will always be a need for

faith and even a peace in the midst of any
misunderstanding, I believe we should
always seek to learn how we can respond
to every word spoken. We should never let
any misunderstanding work as an obstacle
to our faith and trust in his ability and
promise to bring words to pass.

If we can learn to grow familiar with his

ways by pursuing deeper understanding in
the realms of the prophetic, it would never
be to a fault.

When you learn how to weigh and process words, you will gain
the opportunity to benef it f rom stewarding them well. To give
an example of this, I’ll pull an example f rom scripture as well
as one f rom my own life, and take you through the process of
identifying these keys within the words.

Let’s take one of the most well-known prophetic words and

fulf illments f rom scripture. Let’s look at Joel 2:28 and Acts 2.

Joel 2:28-32 “And it shall come to pass afterward,

that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth,

blood and f ire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be
turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great
and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to
pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be
saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those
who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors
shall be those whom the Lord calls.

Acts 2:14-24 ESV “But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted
up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all
who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give
ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you
suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But
this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall
prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and f ire, and vapor of smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and
magnif icent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon
the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Page 8

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a

man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders
and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you
yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to
the def inite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucif ied
and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up,
loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for
him to be held by it.”

In the above verses, you’ll see the various colors outlining

certain sections of the passages.

In the next portion of this f ile, we’ll break down what each of
them mean.

Page 9

In the initial prophetic word, we can see:

1. Times and Seasons – Verses 28, 30, and 32

(“before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And it
shall come to pass”, “before the great and awesome day of the
Lord comes. And it shall come to pass”)

2. Signs Accompanying – Verse 30

(“And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth,

blood and f ire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned
to darkness, and the moon to blood”)

3. Condition – Verse 32

(“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord”)

4. Provisions – Verses 28, 29, and 32

(“that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your
daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and
female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, shall
be saved, among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord
calls.”)

Four Keys of Prophetic Stewardship

In recognizing these four keys, we can understand how Peter

knew that this prophecy was being fulf illed.

In shortened form, we can say that these verses in Joel reveal:

1. This outpouring would occur before the Great and Glorious day of
the Lord. This reveals to us the time and season for the outpouring.
It is somewhat vague, but still gives us a timeframe to observe.

2. God would confirm this time and season by signs in the heavens
and on the earth. These signs are the “markers” within the time and
season that indicate the validity of the source of the outpouring.
Because the revealed signs occurred along with the outpouring,
Peter knew it was from God and that the outpouring was a
fulfillment of what was prophesied by Joel.

3. In order to become a recipient of this outpouring, a condition

of “calling upon the name of the Lord” must be met. This is the
exhortation within the prophesied time and season. It is still active
today, and true, that all who call upon the name of the Lord shall
be saved.

4. With this condition being met by the presence of men from every
nation under heaven, God poured out the prophesied provision of
his Spirit. Sons and Daughters would now prophesy, old men would
dream dreams, and young men would see visions. Both male and
female servants would be among the recipients of this outpouring,
and those who call upon the name of the Lord would be saved.
These are the provisions that have been poured out, in agreement
with the words given in Joel.

Peter, in his revealing announcement of the situation, revealed

the fulf illment of Joel’s prophecy by revisiting the Word, and
aff irming these aspects. The Word had been weighed, believed
on, and now understood! Here are the verse correlations with
the prophetic word.

1. Time and Season – Verses 17, 20, and 21

2. Signs – Verses 16, 19, 20, and 22

3. Conditions – Verse 21

4. Provisions – Verses 17, 18, 21, 24

Do your best to list and relate the keys f rom these verses
below! Be descriptive in your responses and feel f ree to add
