configurations and may vary in specific customer
configurations.
1.3.1 Environment
The OMS 846, meets the requirements for operational,
transportation and storage environment as specified in ETS 300
019, classified as follows;
NOTE! The unit does not operate outside the defined "operating
temperature area". When the temperature has been below the
defined "operating temperature area" and heats up into the
"operating temperature area", the unit will automatically go into
service, without any intervention from an operator.

1.4.1.5 Definitions
SELV Circuits
SELV Circuits are ports that have maximum DC working voltage
level less than 60Volt (42.4V AC). In addition, the ports must not be
connected to telecommunication networks in the EN 60950 meaning
of the term (see CEI/ IEC 60950-1 2001-10 standard clause
1.2.13.8).
• is installed in RAL, or
• shall not have electrical cables that exits the building unless
those ports are TNV circuits, or
• shall have a written consent or in other ways evident that its
connecting port towards the SELV circuit port is not a
telecommunication network.
Telecommunication Network
A metallically terminated transmission medium intended for
communication between equipment that may be located in separate
buildings, excluding:
TNV Circuit
A circuit which is in the equipment and to which the accessible area
of contact is limited and that is so designed and protected that,
under normal operating conditions and single fault conditions (see
CEI/IEC 60950-1 2001-10 standard clause 1.4.14), the voltages do
not exceed specified limit values.
Caution!
When installing in an environment where compliance to safety
standard ETS/EN 60950 is required, consider the following:
If not all interconnections can be classified as SELV, the
equipment must only be installed in Restricted Area Location
(RAL) and be permanent connected to safety-ground via rack or
separate ground.
• Multimeter
• Torx T10 screwdriver for the brackets
• Yellow/green flexible ground cable (1.25 - 2.50 mm2, 16 - 14
AWG) if AC/DC adaptor is planned.
• Tie wraps for cables and soft, flexible velcro bands for fiber optic
cables.
Caution!
Wear a grounding wrist strap while unpacking, handling and
interconnecting the OMS 846 equipment modules, to discharge
any static buildup.
• Desktop
• 19” rack
• ETSI rack
• Wall mount
According to your order, the necessary parts are supplied in the
shipment.
2. Align the adaptor bracket and the rack bracket and connect them
to the left side of the unit.
6. Insert the unit into the equipment rack and connect the OMS 846
to the equipment rack with four M6 screws.
3. Insert the unit into the equipment rack and connect the OMS 846
to the equipment rack with four M6 screws.
Caution!
Static electricity can damage electronic equipment. While
unpacking and handling electronic modules, wear a grounding
wrist strap to discharge the static buildup. Grounding wrist
straps are designed to prevent equipment damage caused by
static electricity. Before making the necessary interconnections,
connect the grounding wrist strap.
Warning!
Warning!
1. Insert the wires into the desired connector and fix the wire on the
connector. The following color-coding applies:
2. Connect the OMS 846 power cable (with the ground) to power
connector on the OMS 846 as shown in the figure “Installation
overview” on page 1 -10
Caution!
Be sure that the power cable is connected and verify the correct
polarity. Check if it is properly fused.
TIP! The power supply has been connected correctly when the
green LED is lit.
2. Insert the stripped end of the grounding wire into the open end of
the female grounding lug.
4. Insert the screw through the locking washer and through the hole
in the grounding contact (right-side rear, lower hole, see
“Installation overview” on page 1 -10).Tighten the screw.
1.6.4.1 Power On
1. Insert the 4-pin (Molex Mini-fit 4x1) DC connector into the power
connector on the OMS 846 device.
RED
Red indication has several purposes:
GREEN
• Module In-Service.
GREEN FLASHING
• Flashing green LED on Ethernet related modules during
shutdown.
• Flashing green LED after inserting a service module in Base Unit
indicate that the module is receiving a firmware to align the status
for Network release level stored on the system controller. This will
only be triggered when the Update policy is enabled for the
service module being inserted. An event will be reported in this
case.
EXTINGUISHED
• Indicates that the module is Out-of-Service. Module can be
removed.
The -48V cable connects the OMS 846 to the internal -48V power-
rails inside the rack. It has a mini- fit connector in one end and is not
terminated in the other end. The customer must add the preferred
type of connector.
1.7.5 E1 cables
Shielded cables, external balun/patch panel can be delivered.
Caution!
Wear a grounding wrist strap while unpacking, handling and
interconnecting the OMS 846 equipment modules, to discharge
any static buildup.
Ericsson recommends that you label the electrical cable at each end
to avoid confusion with cables that are similar in appearance.
Warning!
3. Guide the cables through the cable ties mounted on the sides of
the rack. The cable ties hold the cables to the side of the rack to
reduce the risk of fiber pinching.
2. Fix the connector with the retaining screw to the alarm port.
3. Guide the cable through the cable ties mounted on the sides of
the rack. The cable ties hold the cables to the side of the rack to
reduce the risk of fiber pinching.
1.8.1 Introduction
The SFP modules to be used, are available from Ericsson.
Warning!
Caution!
Only interfaces classified as Class-1 laser as specified in IEC
60825-1, IEC 60825-2 or IEC 60825-12, can be used on the optical
interfaces (SFPs).
Caution!
Fiber-optic SFP modules are equipped with a Class 1 laser,
which emits invisible radiation. Do not stare into open optical
ports.
Caution!
Insert clean dust plugs into the SFP module after removing the
cables to protect the fiber-optic. Clean the optic surfaces of the
fiber-optic cables with a soft antistatic cloth before you
reconnect them to another SFP module. Take actions to avoid
dust and other contaminants getting into the optical apertures.
Optics fail when obstructed with dust.
Caution!
Do not install or remove the SFP module with fiber-optic cables
attached to it, due to the potential damage to the cables, the
cable connector, or the optical interfaces in the SFP module.
Disconnect all cables before removing or installing an SFP
module. Do not remove and insert SFP modules more often than
is absolutely necessary.
Make sure that the SFP module has the correct orientation, either a
latch-up or a latch-down orientation.
3. Insert the SFP module into the slot. Insertion is correct when you
feel the module-connector snap into place in the rear of the slot.
4. Remove the dust plugs from the optical ports on fiber-optic SFP
modules and store them for later use.
NOTE! When you are ready to connect the cable, remove the dust
plugs from the fiber-optic SFP module port and the rubber
caps from the fiber-optic cable. The plugs and caps protect
the SFP module ports and cables from contamination and
ambient light.
3. Use your index finger to pull the bale out and down to eject the
module.
4. Grasp the SFP module and carefully remove it from the module
slot.
1. Remove the rubber plugs from the module port and fiber-optic
cable, and store them for future use.
2. Insert one end of the fiber-optic cable into the SFP module port
(see Figure 6 )
