b. What is It

Directions: Read the lecture entitled “Quantitative Research Problem” to have a

better understanding about the topic.

Nature of Quantitative Research Problem

Once a person encountered uncertainty, being inquisitive, you will find ways for
answers or solution. Ignited by interest, curiosity, or need you will find yourself pondering
about the current problem you are facing. When you are thinking and behaving this way,
you are then confronted by a problem that can be a source of a research problem.
A research problem is simple as a problem you would like to research. Quantitative
Research Problem dealt more with the precision and specificity of the problem.
Furthermore, the quantitative research problem describes trends and patterns of a
phenomenon.
When you have identified your quantitative research problem, you can now state it and
make sure to establish its place in your study. In your written paper, this can be found as
Statement of the Problem, where it formally introduces the problem that you want to
investigate or address. Then you will start specifying what you want to answer in your
study.

Research Problem and Research Questions

The research questions help to clarify and specify the research problem. Research
questions are also considered as sub-problems of your research problem. These
questions are informative in nature. It specifies the method of collecting and analyzing
data and the type of data to be collected since you are exploring a quantitative research
problem.

What are Research Questions?

The fundamental core of a research project is the research question. It focuses the
study, determines the methodology, and guides all stages of inquiry, analysis and
reporting. It is a statement that identifies the phenomenon to be studied.
The questions set out what you hope to learn about the topic. This question, together
with your approach, will guide and structure the choice of data to be collected and
analysed. Some research questions focus your attention onto the relationship of particular
theories and concepts: ‘how does gender relate to career choices of members of different
religions?’ Some research questions aim to open an area to let possible new theories
emerge: ‘what is going on here?’ is the most basic type in exploratory research. For an
undergraduate research, your question needs to be more targeted than either of these.

Characteristics of Good Research Questions

Once you have already enumerated your research questions for your study, it is
important that you consider its quality to answer and explain your research problem. The
following are good characteristics of research questions, as described by Fraenkel and
Wallen (2020).

SAN LUIS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Feasible. Consider the amount of time, energy, money, respondents, and even your
current situation as a student-researcher. Is the research problem possible? Will it not
spend unreasonable amount? Consider these examples: “How do parents feel about the
blended learning modality for elementary learners?” and “How would giving each learner
their own laptop to be used in this blended learning modality affect their performance
tasks?” The first example is definitely a more feasible research question. Considering the
resources, it is more possible to gather the data needed to answer the question.
Clear. The clarity of how the questions stated lead to agreement of meaning of the
readers of your study. Since your research questions are also considered as the main
focus in the gathering and analyzing the data, it is therefore very important that these are
stated clearly.
Significant. Ask if your research questions are relevant or important to ask. Will
answering these questions provide an additional contribution to address the given
research problem? In other words, are the research questions really worth investigating?
At this point, you do not just consider the time and money that you will spend, but more
importantly, the value of what you are trying to investigate. So aside from the reason that
your chosen research problem is within your interest, you should also provide a sound
justification of your choice as a researcher.
Ethical. Always consider the welfare of people, animals or who so ever involve in your
study. Look into ways of answering the research questions without inflicting physical and
psychological harm to persons involved.

Tips in Formulating Research Questions:

• Relevant
• Manageable in terms of research and in terms of your own academic abilities
• Consistent
• Clear and simple
• Interesting

Formulating Research Questions

Research questions can be generally classified into two: general and specific. The
general question of the study is derived from the research problem while the specific
questions are anchored on the general research problem.

For example:

This study aims to determine the relationship between the types learning delivery mode
and students’ learning styles. Furthermore, it seeks to answer the following research
questions: (1) What are the different learning delivery modes of the school? (2) What the
various learning styles of the students? (3) Is there a significant relationship between the
different learning delivery modes of the school and the learning styles of its students?

Notice that a general problem was presented first. Then it was followed by the specific
questions considered as research questions of the study.

c. What is It

Directions: Read the lecture entitled “Scope and Delimitation” to have a better
understanding about the topic.

Scope and Delimitation

In doing research study, we make sure that we have certainty and reasons for drawing
the inclusion and exclusion of research variables. We do not write for the sake of writing
the parts of the research paper; such as setting the scope and delimitation of your study.
It is important because it draws the boundary of your study. Without doing so, research
procedures and results will not be coherent to the goal of your study.
The scope specifies the coverage of your study such as variables, population or
participant, and timeline. Delimitation cites factors of your study that are not included or
excluded or those you will not deal in your study.
In this section of your research paper, you may also state the reasons why you did not
include the variables. A clearly written scope and delimitation of the study will make it
definitely easier to answer questions which are related or not related to your study.

Components of Scope and Delimitation

In writing the scope and delimitation of your study, you are also asking the basic profile
questions of your research. The following are the components of the scope and
delimitation of the study but not limited to:

Topic of the Study. What are the variables to be included and excluded?

Objectives or Problems to be Addressed. Why are you doing this study?

Time Frame. When are you going to conduct this study?

Locale of the Study. Where are you going to gather your data?

Characteristics of the Respondents. Who will be your respondents?

Method and Research Instruments. How are going to collect the data?

Difference between Delimitation and Limitation of the Study

The delimitation of the study describes the various limitations that arose during the design
and conduct of the study. Along the way of conducting your study, you will encounter
limitations which you have not drawn before you start – these are the delimitations of
study. Most of the delimitations arose from the applicability or usefulness of the findings
of the study to the current problem.

Variables not included in your study are also determined by delimitation of your study.
While on the other hand, limitation of the study are those variables included in your study.
Hence, limitation of the study is actually the identified scope of the study.

Writing the Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of the study describes the coverage of the study. It identifies the boundaries
of the study in terms of subjects, objectives, facilities, area, time frame, and the issues to
which the research is focused.
Sample phrases that help express the scope of the study:
• The coverage of this study …
• The study consists of …
• The study covers the …
• The study is focus on …

The delimitation of the study pertains to the boundaries of the research with respect to
the major variables. Delimitation is used to make the study better and more feasible and
not just for the interest of the researchers. It identifies the constraints or weaknesses of
the study which are not within the control of the researchers.
Sample phrases that expressed the delimitation of the study:
• The study does not cover the …
• The researchers limited this study to …
• The study is limited to …

In writing the scope and delimitation, it is essential that the researcher has already
defined the major variables of the study which are contained in the title and in the general
statement of the problem. The scope and delimitation of the study should include the
following items:
1. topic of the study;

2. objectives of the study;

3. issues it will address;
4. time frame;
5. locale of the study; and
6. characteristics of the participants.

Reminder: In writing the scope and delimitation of the study, make sure that there are
reasons for the inclusion and exclusion of some variables. It is suggested to state the
scope of the study in one paragraph and discuss the delimitation in another paragraph.

Example Scope and Delimitation

This research was bounded on the out-of-field teaching cases in public high schools of
Trece Martires City. The focus of this study revolved on the profile of out-of-field public
high school teachers in terms of age, gender, subjects taught and years in service.
This study was delimited on the out-of-field teachers of public junior high schools,
therefore, private school, elementary level, and senior high school teachers were not
included.
The study focused on the out-of-field teaching cases in public high schools of Trece
Martires City. The researchers selected the public schools as their variable because public
schools were likely to practice out-of-field teaching. Moreover, the researchers chose
junior high school teachers because they have specialized subjects.
The research was conducted in Trece Martires City from November 2019 to February
2020.

3. What are the benefits?

d. What is It

Directions: Read the lecture entitled “Significance of the Study” to have a better
understanding about the topic.
Significance of the Study

The significance of the study provides details to the reader on how the research will
contribute such as what the study will contribute and who will benefit from it. It also
includes an explanation of the work’s importance as well as its potential benefits.
When we speak of the significance of the study, we are identifying the beneficiaries
and the benefits it will give when the problem is solved. The beneficiaries include
individuals like students, teachers, principals, parents, and others; the government, non-
governmental organizations and private institutions.

Here are some tips in writing the significance of the study.

1. Answer the question, “What are the benefits or advantages of the research based on
the statement of the problem?”
2. Determine the specific contribution of the research to the society as well as to the
individual.
3. Arrange the benefits according to the degree of significance.

Example of Significance of the Study

Problem solving in mathematics enables the students to acquire ways of thinking,

habits of persistence and curiosity, and confidence in unfamiliar situations (National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). It will be easier for students to do problem
solving if they have a good reading comprehension skills.
The findings of this study may therefore be of great use and importance to the following:
Students. The results of this study may prove beneficial to students in making them
understand that they need to be competent in their reading comprehension and in solving
problem to adapt to this fast changing world.
Teachers. The results of this study may provide information to teachers concerning
the relationship of reading comprehension and problem solving skills of students so that
they can develop strategies to improve the performance of students.
Parents. The results of this study may make parents realize the importance of
developing the reading comprehension skills and mathematical problem solving skills of
their children. They can help their children develop those skills by providing them
necessary reading and learning materials in English and mathematics.
Administrators. The results of this study may help the administrators in determining
the weaknesses of the students and in identifying the students’ needs in order to plan
programs and activities that can enhance the competencies of the teachers who are
teaching mathematics and English.
Curriculum Makers. This study may provide useful information in formulating and
developing learning materials that can enhance the reading comprehension and
mathematical problem solving skills of the students.
