4Q 1. How does Joel feel about getting out of bed at 11:15 P.M.

to feed the lamb? How can you tell?

Answer:
I feel that Joel does not feel bad about getting out of bed at
11:15 P.M. to feed the lamb. I can tell this because of he neither
complains nor grumbles when his mother calls him up to do
the chore for her. Instead, he immediately stops reading and
goes outside to run the errand. Moreover, he is familiar with
the farm buildings and spends most of his time in the barn
willingly. Joel is in the habit of looking after the cattle.
Farming, as the writer says, is Joel's world.

Q 2. Describe the Holland's farm.

Answer:
Hollands' farm is situated near Scales Mound, which is a small
town having a population of four hundred people only. The
farm covers an area of two hundred and forty-five acres. It
originally belonged to Joel's great-grandfather, James, an Irish
immigrant, who purchased it back in the year 1860. A team of
horses was driven by him in order to plough the land to make
it ready for the harvesting corn. Passed on to the fifth
generation, Joel's family ploughs it now by the means of a
tractor, which has the power of about one hundred and twenty
horses. The soil of the farm is rich and black. In short,
Hollands' farm is a symbol of the family's farming heritage.

Q 3. In what ways does Joel play the role of an adult?

Answer:
Joel plays the role of an adult by running daily errands that help to
run the farm and support the family. He wears boots every day,
irrespective of the season because he has to do chores related to
farming every night after school and for several hours on weekends.
Although Joel is a teenager, he does all the work that is expected of
an adult, so, we can say that Joel's life is not like that of a typical
teenager.

Q 4. Does Joel agree with his brother about the rewards of a

farming life?
Answer:
Yes, Joel agrees with his brother about the rewards of farming life.
His brother, Bill, says that the greatest reward of farming is that a
farmer leads an independent life. He is his own boss. Not only he is
independent in making choices, but he also does not have to work
as anybody's subordinate. However, Joel jokingly disagrees with his
brother's point of view, stating that he has got bosses. When asked
who they are, he points out each of his family members. Although
he used to work as a helper, involved in performing petty tasks,
such as carrying tools, while others would do the main work. But, he
would never mind occasional bossing. As for now, he remains
occupied in his own work, so he is not available to work as
everybody's go-getter anymore.

Q 5. What skills must a farmer have to run a farm like the

Holland's?
Answer:
To run a farm like the Holland's, a farmer must have the following
skills. He would need to have machine operators, and huge,
powerful vehicles. He has to perform a variety of tasks. He has to
act like a mechanic, repairing the machine operators and vehicles,
and a husbandman, raising livestock. He has to act as a
veterinarian, looking after the cattle when they're sick. He also has
to perform the duty of an agriculturalist, growing food on a large
scale, as well as a business person in order to manage a farm
operation, just like Joel's father.

Q 6. Joel says that of all the places on earth, he would choose to
live “right here” — on the farm. Do you think his choice is a good
one?
Answer:
Joel says that of all the places on earth, he would choose to live
"right there" - on the farm. As the famous proverb says, "home is
where the heart is", I think that his choice is good because it is
evident from the story that Joel has a profound interest in farming
and rearing of cattle. Moreover, he is very close to nature and
cannot afford to miss seeing the growing crops and changing
seasons at the farm. He believes that after having lived in the
countryside for years, the idea of city life cannot fascinate him. Joel
is very passionate about farming, so he should not leave the farm in
order to move somewhere else.

Q 7. In a sentence, state the main idea of the story.

Answer:
The main idea of the story, 'It's Country for Me' by Patricia
Demuth is that one can earn sufficiently and enjoy life,
irrespective of the profession, provided that one works hard
and is devoted to his profession.
