WW2: Midterms Assignment #6 – M4U1

1. What is a WAN?
 The Wide Area Network (WAN) connects sites in different geographical locations.
Usually, WANs rely on telecommunications and service provider networks rather
than being managed directly by network administrators.
2. What is a packet made up of?
 Packets consist of three portions: the header, payload, and trailer. Conceptually, a
network packet is like a postal package. In this sense, the envelope serves as the
header, the content is the payload, and the signature is the trailer.
3. What are the key features of a packet switching network?
 Nodes – Nodes in the network can operate forwarding functions, allowing a packet to
take any accessible path through the network. Similarly, it strengthens the network
against like failures. Also, it is advantageous for the network to use small packets
that are easy to re-send.
4. What protocol is usually used to provide logical addressing on networks?
 Internet Protocol (IP) – The IP suite manages logical addressing as well as packet
routing between hosts and networks.
5. What type of address identifies a network interface in the context of the local network
segment only?
 Media Access Control (MAC) address – It is a distinct identifier assigned to a
network interface controller for use as a network address in communications within a
network segment.
6. What type of device is used to transfer packets between different networks?
 Router – It is a physical or virtual internetworking device that is designed to receive,
evaluate, and forward data packets between computer networks.
7. Which protocol allows people to use names/labels to address network resources rather
than numeric addresses?
 Domain Name System (DNS) – It is the hierarchical and decentralized naming
system that is used to classify computers reachable through the Internet and other
Internet Protocol networks.
8. Which of the following parts of a web address is usually depends on a name resolution
service: protocol type, host location, file path?
 Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) – It is the complete domain name for a
specific computer, or host, on the internet. The FQDN consists of two portions: the
hostname and the domain name.
9. What does HTTP stand for?
 Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
10. Which email protocol(s) are used to download messages from a mail server?
 Post Office Protocol v3 (POP3) – When using this, the emails are downloaded but
deleted from the server (unless you change the default settings).
 Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) – When using this, emails “reside” on the
server and can easily read or interact with emails from multiple devices.
