NUMERICALS

1. An event occurs at x = 100 m, y = 10 m, z = 5 m and t = 1x10-4 second in a frame S. Find the

coordinates of this event in a frame S’ which is moving with velocity 2.7 x 10 8 meter per
second with respect to the frame S along the common XX’ axes using (i) Galilean
transformation and (iii) Lorentz transformation.
2. Two particles came towards each other with speed 0.8 c with respect to laboratory. What is
their relative speed?.
3. Show that no signal can travel faster than the velocity of light.
4. An experimenter observes a radioactive atom moving with a velocity of 0.25c. The atom
then emits a β-particle which has a velocity 0.9c relative to the atom in the direction of its
motion. What is the velocity of the beta particle as observed by the experimenter?.
5. A rocket ship is 100 m long on the ground. When it is in flight, its length is 99 m to an
observer on the ground. What is its speed?.
6. Calculate the percentage contraction in the length of rod in frame of reference moving with
velocity 0.8 c in the direction parallel to its length.
7. A clock measures the proper time. With what velocity should it travel relative to an observer
so that it appears to go slow by 30 s in 12 h.
8. A clock keeps correct time. With what speed should it be moved relative to an observer so
that it may appear to loose 4 min in 24 h.
9. Show that the spherical light wave x2+y2+z2 = c2t2 is invariant under Lorentz transformation.
10. What is the length of a meter stick moving parallel to its length when its mass is 3/2 times its
rest mass? (Ans: 0.667m).
11. A particle of rest mass m0 moves with speed c/√2. Calculate its mass, momentum, total
energy and kinetic energy.
12. A rod has a length of 100 cm. When it is in a satellite moving with velocity 0.26c relative to
laboratory. What will be the length of the rod as determined by an observer (a) in the
satellite (b) in the laboratory.
13. Calculate the velocity of the rod when its length will appear 90% of its proper length. (Ans:
1.307 x 108 m/sec)
14. At what speed should a clock be moved so that it may appear to lose 1 minute in each
hour?. (Ans: v= 5.45x 107 m/s).
15. With what speed should a clock keeping correct time be relative to an observer so that it may
seem to lose 1 minute per day ?. (Ans: v= 0.0374c).
16. Show that the rest mass of a particle is given by: m0 = p2 c2 – T2/ 2T2c2 where P and T
denote the momentum and kinetic energy of the particle.
