LEARNING
COMPETENCY
Observe correct subject–verb agreement.

I. CONCEPT NOTES
Subject - verb agreement simply means the subject and verb must agree in number to
ensure that a sentence is grammatically correct. Generally, if the subject is singular, the verb

italicized (verb) word in each sample sentences.

Simple present form: A and E Program helps us pursue our goals.

singular subject singular verb

Inverted subjects: There are 31 learners in the Learning Center.

plural verb plural subject

Compound subjects: Determination and handwork are needed to pass the tests.
plural subject plural verb

Either my sister or brothers are going to my completion ceremony.

Singular/Plural Indefinite Pronouns:

Each gets an award for playing.
Sing subj singular verb

Both are qualified to take the test.

plural subj plural verb

Collective Noun: Our class participates the annual tree planting activity. (singular)
The family members eat their breakfast together. (plural)

LAS TITLE Passive and Active Voice of Verbs LAS NO. 2 SCORE
LEARNING
COMPETENCY
Use the passive and active voice meaningfully in varied contexts.

I. CONCEPT NOTES
When the subject of a sentence performs the verb’s action, we say that the sentence is
in the active voice. Sentences in the active voice have strong, direct, and clear tone. The
basic active voice construction is subject + verb + object.
EXAMPLE:
The learners submit the outputs.
subject verb object

Sarah and Ben gathered the portfolios yesterday.

subject/s verb object
A sentence is in passive voice when the subject is acted on by the verb. The passive
voice is always constructed with a conjugated form of to be plus the verb’s past participle.
Doing this usually generates a preposition. Making the sentence passive flipped the structure
and necessitated the preposition by.
Let us transform the example above into a passive voice.
The outputs are submitted by the learners.
object to be form + past participle subject

The portfolios were gathered yesterday by Sarah and Ben.

object to be form + past participle subject
II. EXERCISES
Fill in the blanks with an active or passive voice of verb.

after a long, arduous toil, we are reminded to learn from our imperfections and strive to be a
better version of ourselves. 5Let’s continue to live life and pray for God’s working hands to fix
our broken plans. 6As we ponder on this quote: “Remember your dreams and fight for them”.

topography and altitude.

In the Arctic region since it is located in the Northern Hemisphere where they

have six months day and six months night, they have a very cold and chilly climate
because most of their land and bodies of water are covered with thick ice.
In West Africa, specifically in Burkina Fasco, they have a hot climate due to its

land features particularly because of the Sahara Desert. Desert is an arid land that
seldom receives rainfall. The presence of the desert affects the climate, also because
Africa is located near the equator.
In Canada, they have continental climate the very reason why they experience
4

four seasons. The position of the mountain ranges and the vast geography of the
country affect their climate.

Duterte orders probe of missing seized rice
By: Christine O. Avendaño, Julie Alipala - @inquirerdotnet
“Visibly upset” about the missing 23,015 sacks of rice smuggled from Malaysia that
the government had earlier seized, President Duterte ordered “an immediate and
thorough” investigation of the incident in Zamboanga City.“The President was really
angry because how do you lose 23,000 sacks?” presidential spokesperson Harry
Roque said on Thursday at a news briefing. Roque said Duterte instructed the National
Food Authority (NFA) officer in charge and Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña to
“immediately place on preventive suspension to individuals who may be part of the
scheme.” He said Lapeña told him his office had administratively relieved Zamboanga
district collector Lyceo Martinez and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) police district
commander, Filomeno Salazar. The BOC chief also said he had sent a team of
investigators to Zamboanga to look into the incident, according to Roque. A crackdown
on the smuggling of rice from Malaysia, coupled with the depletion of the rice reserve
of the NFA, precipitated a severe rice shortage in Zamboanga City and Tawi-Tawi
province. The severe shortage sent prices of commercial rice soaring to P70 a
kilogram in Zamboanga City and P80 a kilo in Tawi-Tawi, prompting their respective
local governments to declare a state of calamity. Malacañang has acknowledged that
the high rice prices pulled down the approval and trust ratings of President Duterte
last month. Roque said the relief of Martinez and Salazar was “for the purpose of
ensuring they cannot tamper with evidence and they cannot influence the
investigation.” But he said authorities recovered 16,000 sacks of rice on on Oct. 1. The
rice was found over the weekend in the Basulta Traders Corp. warehouse and two
other warehouses.

It’s been years since countries surrounding the West Philippine Sea or otherwise known

namely; China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. The said sea is located in the
Pacific Ocean having 3,500,000 square kilometers from Karimata Straits to Taiwan
(en.wikipedia.org).
Found in this sea are 11 billion barrels of untapped oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of
natural gas. No wonder, many sovereign countries surrounding the West Philippine Sea want
to claim their rights and ownership towards the sea and islands most especially China. The
Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague issued its ruling claim (www.cfr.org) in favored
of the Philippines in July 2016 However, China never wavered upon the decision of the court;
instead, they strengthened their forces in guarding both island and sea leaving the Philippines
powerless even though they are favoured by the court.
The disputed sea is located in: China’s south, Vietnam’s east, Philippines’ west, Malay
Peninsula’s east and Sumatra up to the Straight of Singapore in the Western, North of the
Bangka Belitung Islands and Borneo (en.wikipedia.org). So instead of creating chaos and
dispute why not open and share it around the countries surrounding the said territory.

and it should be supported by facts.

II. EXERCISES

Read the selection below and write a one paragraph feedback about the given issue.
Your feedback may focus on the economic, social, and moral aspect.
Corona Virus 19 also known as Covid – 19 is an infectious disease caused by severe
acute respiratory syndrome. It doesn’t only affect our country but also globally. It affects
different people in different ways and transmitted when virus spread primarily through droplets
of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes. In our
country we already have more than 30 thousand cases and more than nine million globally.
This pandemic affects not only the health but also the economic aspects. Since the
government issued lockdown, majority of the citizens are jobless because almost
establishments, factories, malls, and other businesses are temporarily closed. And because
of this, the government is the one responsible for feeding each household making the
economic state of the government drop off.
Socially, Covid-19 strengthens the camaraderie and unity of the public. Despite the
threat to our health, some individuals initiate and extend their helping hands to the one in need,
lifting them up and giving them hope to be resilient. Also, other countries are extending their
hands to help the other countries that are in great dilemma caused by the pandemic.
In terms of moral aspects, Covid-19 manages to bring different sides and shaken the
beliefs of the individuals. The action of the authority upsets the public. Protest and rants are
everywhere. Curses and blames are being thrown at the government. Several personnel are
blinded by the truth and end up being eaten by their anger. There are people who also take
the disease for granted; they are using the said virus for their personal gain and interest. On
the other side, there were many personalities that give sunshine to others. Their stand and
belief are strengthened, their principle on life are braced by the experiences, the pain, the loss
and the will for survival.
