Film Review
The 1998 Parent Trap movie is an improved version of the original film from 1961.
Have you ever wondered if you had a lost twin sibling? Well, this situations is well described
and performed in a movie called The Parent Trap. The original Parent Trap movie was
created by David Swift, Ronald F. Maxwell and Mollie Miller, released in 1961. Thanks to the
success of the movie, a new version was created in 1998. This modern version was created
by Nancy Meyers, Charles Shyer and David Swift. The movie is a romantic comedy, a very
popular genre. The Parent Trap film is about the identical twins, Hallie and Annie, who were
separated when they were babies, after their parents’ divorce. Years later, they meet each
other at a summer camp and decide to switch places in an effort to reunite their parents.
Some of the stars that appeared in the film where Lindsay Lohan, Natasha Richardson and
Dennis Quaid. The movie takes place in different settings, in order to entertain the audience.
At the beginning it takes place in the summer camp, were the twins meet each other. Then
they go home, one to California with their father and the other one to England with their
mother.
The movie begins with both girls arriving at the summer camp, one of them lives with their
mother and the other one with their father. Their parents haven’t talk in a while, and still, they
both accidentally have the exact same idea of sending their daughters to a summer camp,
the same summer camp. While at the camp, the girls meet, but they start to hate each other,
the make heavy pranks to one another and the teachers at the camp punished them,
sending them both of the girls to a mountain cabin, all by their own. There, they find out they
are siblings because they each have a piece of a photo of the parent they don't live with,
they join both pieces and the photo completes. They start to talk about what they like and
their birthdays, and realize they have a lot in common. The camp ends, and they come up
with the plan of changing lives, the one that lives with their father will now go visit their
mother, and the one that lives with their mother will now go visit their father; they also want
to reunite their parents and make them fall in love with each other again. The twins arrive
their new houses and start knowing their new parent. But there’s a problem, their father has
a new girlfriend, they need to get rid of her before is to late and she marries their father. This
remake of 1961's The Parent Trap, stars Lindsay Lohan as both Hallie and Annie, she is
only 11 years old in this movie. Natasha Richardson plays Elizabeth James, the mother; and
Dennis Quaid plays Nick Parker, the father. The film is also full of amazing secondary
characters, that bring a lot of fun to the big screen; like Lisa Walter who plays the role of a
cute and loud babysitter, and Simon Kuz who plays the role of a funny and sarcastic butler.
Elaine Hendrix, plays the father’s crazy girlfriend.
Nancy Jane Meyers is the principal director on this film, she is a professional American film
director, producer, and screenwriter. She is the writer, producer, and director of a number of
big screen successes, including What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give, The Holiday,
It's Complicated, and The Intern. The Parent Trap was not an exception of these successes,
it was positively acclaimed by the audience. Lindsay Lohan is just a little girl during the
filming of this movie, yet she was cast as the main character and didn’t disappoint anyone,
her acting was very neat and fabulous. The actors for mother and father were chosen
incredibly as well, it all fits perfectly. The production’s costume design was simple and pretty,
the actors living in California wear casual clothes, because of the weather and because of
their jobs at the family vineyard. While the ones living in England wear more fancy and
winter clothes.
This movie is full of surprises you don’t want to miss. It is for all public, for anyone who is
willing to laugh and be moved and touched by the love between these twins. I was probably
six years old the first time I watched the movie, it was really funny and interesting to watch,
but I was a little girl and I really didn’t understand very well what it was all about. Now that I
am older and I can watch it on Netflix every time I want, I finally understand the main idea of
the movie, it talks about divorce and about the effects this has on children, but it is also
beautiful to see the love between sisters, the great bond it is created between them. This film
is a must watch for me.
