Photosynthesis Activity: Leaf with "in" and "out" envelopes on front and back. Students sort the
cards into the correct envelope. Water, sunlight and carbon dioxide go IN to the leaves while
sugar and oxygen are products of photosynthesis so they go OUT.

How Do Trees Make Oxygen?
In this tree science experiment, kids can figure out which trees produce the most oxygen.

We placed the leaves in equal amounts of water (about a cup per leaf). We let the leaves sit in
the water for one hour. After an hour, we observed which leaves had the most bubbles.

For eg: The maple leaf had the biggest bubbles, but the reddish mystery leaves from the bush had
the most bubbles.

The holly leaves and the mystery tree leave had almost no bubbles

they must find a solution to a human-created problem, like ozone damage, then they can conduct
this experiment to determine what kind of trees would be best to plant to reverse ozone damage.
What you need for the photosynthesis tree experiment

 Small containers of similar size (we used mason jars)

 Several types of leaves (we used leaves from three trees and two bushes)
Timer
No-Prep Photosynthesis Experiment for Kids

This tree science experiment was authored and run entirely by fourth grade students.

They wanted to know if they could tell what trees in our area produced the most oxygen by
figuring out which leaves produced the most bubbles in water.

Creativity: Can a Plant Grow From the Top of a Carrot?

The carrot-top experiment involves students researching whether a plant can grow and get the nutrients
needed from a carrot top. Students need four carrots and a shallow container. First, cut off the top of the
carrot about a half-inch away from the leaves. Carefully cut the leaves off the top, keeping it close to
the base. Place the carrots in the container with the cut side facing downward and add water to cover
half the carrot top. Put the container into a well-lit windowsill and observe the carrot tops daily for any
changes. Use a ruler to measure the growth of leaves or roots out of the tops and record the data in a
table. Continue the experiment for a week and draw conclusions based on reasons for the growth of
leaves from the tops. ANSWER: Carrots, the root plant and orange vegetable, cannot be grown from
planting just the top of the vegetable. But the carrot plant, or what is known as the carrot top, can be
regrown from harvested carrot tops.
