Well, first of all Ive got to say that this preference doesnt spring from Smallville but from another TV-show, "Lois&Clark, the new adventures of Superman". This was one of the first TV shows Ive seen on TV which I was really fond of and that I was really psyched about. So you can understand why my love for the couple really comes from there, even if after that I've seen all the Superman movies too. At the beginning I didnt even want to watch Smallville... the story of Clark/Superman (and Lois, because you cant separate them in my opinion) always got me on fire but I couldnt force myself to begin watching a series where there was Clark but not Lois and to supposedly care about a love story (Clark/Lana) that I know was bound to end bad. Eventually I gave up because my interest for the Superman mythology was too big but, as expected, I wasnt able to become keen on Clark and Lana... and neither on Clark and Chloe. To me, Clark without Lois almost isnt Clark, or isnt anyway the Clark I know and love. So you can imagine how happy I was when Lois was mentioned for the first time back in season 3 and then when she was finally introduced in season 4: to be true I was a little afraid because Lois shouldnt be here at this moment of the story (but neither should Lex if we want to say it out loud) but Erica cast every doubt I had away as soon as she said "Lois. Lois Lane". Why do I like Lois and Clark together? My answer doesnt just deal with Smallville, it cant be since they are one of those historic couples who are around long since. I like them because their relationship is a mature one. The one Clark has with Lana is just a teenager relationship which will fade in comparison to the one he is going to have with Lois. Not to mention the countless flaws of the Clana relationship, the fact that they dont trust each other and so on. Clark trusts Lois, she is the most important confidant he has and vice versa. Together they make a great team, whose goal is to bring justice and truth into the world. They understand and complete each other to perfection and they are always there one for another, without suppressing each other though. They have different characters he is milder while she is more impulsive and straightforward but they have a lot of things in common, among which the most important core values. Clark can be his real self with Lois, managing to be a normal man and a hero at the same time. As Clark repeatedly said in the comics, Lois makes him feel human, she is what makes him human (You're what makes me feel like I'm part of this planet. You are my life ). Shes the one who helps him a lot during the hard times and that prevents him from getting too down (and we can see that in Smallville too, for instance during the episode #4.19 Blank when Lois comforts Clark after he has lost his memory). To be Superman could sometimes bring Clark to isolation but Lois prevents him from it and she accepts to share her husband with the world, knowing that he is too precious good not to share it with the rest of the human kind. Clearly also Clark is always there for Lois, he has a strong bound with her, indissoluble I would say. Just think to the comics, when Lois is shot and he manages to fly at the other end of the world and to take her in his arms before she falls down. He *knows* something is wrong and in the time of a blink, is there by her side: that speaks volumes about being really close and connected to someone. When he is in another dimension to fight in a war along with Wonder Woman, just a day has passed on Earth but millions of years where he is. But when Wonder Woman, the night before the conclusive battle, makes a move on him, he clearly turns her down saying: "Silly, right? Even if she is... gone... a thousand years and another lifetime past... Lois is still the only one" . And Diana respects his decision, something Lana doesnt in the comics wanting to come in between Lois and Clark wedding. In another story, thousands of years go by and Superman all this time long hasnt thought of
anything besides finding a way to bring Lois back! Talk about love and devotion! They have an understanding on all levels: intellectual, physical, spiritual... I know that up until now Ive rambled on the couple in general and Ive said really few things about Smallville but really, my love for them goes way beyond and most of all before Smallville and it is difficult for me talking about this subject without taking into account what Ive written above. In Smallville I always see them with relation to what they will become and enjoy myself noticing the seeds of what is going to be an amazing relationship. Well, what I like about Smallville is the idea to see them in a never before told kind of situation with respect to the comics and to the other series, that is their teenager and young years. I can see how they are becoming what we know they are in the future, to see their relationship from a different angle and to understand how the choices they make affect their journey. At the beginning our beloved couple states that they hate each other and they have a go at one another non stop: what I like here is that they have an effect on each other since from the start, they dont leave their selves indifferent. There is a certain grassroots attraction, something going on that will come up again in the fullness of time. And then, I dont remember who said that but "we always tease the ones we love". Their relationship evolves as the episodes go by, they even become "secret friends" (#416 Lucy) Clark: I guess that's why we're friends Lois: Oh, we're friends now? Clark: I won't tell anyone if you don't and Lois manages to stop Clark before he kills someone (#412 Pariah) or to take him to the prom (even if she is possessed by Dawn, #418 Spirit) when no one else manages to: they are going to deny it to no end but they influence each other. And they care about each other opinions (#504 Aqua). Besides their relationship is really sparkling, I hadnt see Clark laugh in that way god knows since! There sure is a spark between the two, and theyll eventually see it. Without even counting how easily Lois opens her heart with Clark and we know how rare a thing this is for her. Lets think of the dialogues at the end of Lucy, or to the one at the end of #504 Aqua. Like Lois said then in #506 Exposed, Clark doesnt always have to be there to look up for her but he is anyway and she is grateful for it. And when they talk at the unison (clearly annoyed about it)? Clark never talked at the unison neither with Lana nor with Chloe! They are thinking alike. They are becoming closer, how to forget the scene in #601 Zod where Clark goes to visit her at the hospital and he takes her hand saying that hes glad shes back? Their relationship is definitely deepening as the seasons progress, as two parallel scenes in #521 Oracle and #610 Hydro clearly demonstrate: Clark: There are times when I think you dont know me at all. And others when I think you know me better than anyone Lois: I hate that you know me like that
Clark is already telling Lois that sometimes she can understand him better than any other person better than his parents or the people he grew up with. Thats huge in my book! The writers are continually feeding us with little hints at why their relationship is going to work so well. In #610 Hydro for instance Lois states: Lois: I swear, the guy could tell me he was from Mars right now, and I would find a way to dismiss it as an endearing quirk! and then later on when she thinks she has discovered Olivers double identity Lois: Your secret is safe with me, Oliver Replace Mars with Krypton in the first sentence and you get the picture. In the second we can see Loiss reaction to something similar to Clarks secret: no whining and bitching about secrets&lies (ring a bell?), she is immediately by the side of the man she loves. And then the physical attraction, even if still on an unconscious level after their first kiss in #610 Hydro Lois makes it clear stating that Green Arrow (she doesnt know it but it was Clark disguised in that case) could teach her actual boyfriend Oliver a thing or two about kissing. And the face Clark makes after the kiss definitely speaks for itself. So why is then that theyre not together yet? Well, to me even now there is a lot of chemistry between the two but the fact is that this Clark isnt yet the man Lois Lane will fall for, he isnt yet the man who will don a cape and want to save the world or the reporter who exposes injustices. And this works both ways, this Lois isnt the fierce less reporter who knows what she wants from life and isnt afraid to go for it the woman Clark Kent will madly fall in love with. They arent ready for each other yet, they have to make mistakes and to grow up before they can meet again. But that doesnt mean that we cant already feel the sparks and see the marks more or less visible that will then surface and that will be part of their mature natures.
