as an Historiographical Case Study

Hana Llacer Elbeitam FODAR1B

1. In Mrs. Anne Smith--Kear’s search for the “unknown friend” of her deceased brother
(Karl), which source of historical information proved to be more helpful: eyewitnesses or
primary documents? Explain why you think so.

In my own opinion, primary documents proved to be more helpful. In Mrs. Anne

Smith--Kear’s search for the “unknown friend” of her deceased brother, first step they did
was investigation. The journalist took Mrs. Anne Smith-Kear to Gloucestershire
Archives. They have gathered documents and photographs from that time period as
primary sources. These have served as their first-hand evidences. It has helped them
understand who are the possible witnesses that they may find. It helped them trace the
possible evidences of her deceased brother. Primary sources are helpful because they are
documents that chronicled something from the past.

Eyewitnesses may not always be accurate, our memory is not reliable. Some
eyewitnesses tend to lie to cover the truth. Some cannot recall what has happened and
some may have died. The eyewitnesses were not quite useful because it has been past
half-century since the tragedy happened. People who knew Karl may have died or may
not remember anything from the past. With primary sources we can analyze what has
really happened in the past. So these things are really illustrated through primary sources.
They help us find why people did things and what happened.

2. Which primary documents in the Gloucestershire Archives proved to be very crucial in

the search for the identity of the person leaving flowers at Karl Smith’s grave.

In the Gloucestershire Archives they had clues that have been very useful to them.
They started with looking at the picture and wrote down every name they can find. They
found an address at the back with a name. Eric White was the one who took the photo.
Unfortunately he isn’t a witness, but this lead them to another lead, George Lee who
remembered seeing the boys who tried to save Karl.

3. Ronald Westborough is not just the man leaving flowers at Karl Smith’s grave for the past
70 years. He was also an eyewitness to the last moments of Karl and his tragic death in
1947. What is your personal assessment of Ronald Westborough’s statements as an
eyewitness to the life, character, and death of Karl Smith?

In my perspective, I can see Ronald Westborough’s statements were true to life.

He is a good friend to Karl Smith. It is amazing that for 70 years he has been leaving
flowers at the grave of his childhood friend. It is also surprising how it made a big impact
to their lives knowing that Ronald Westborough became a police officer and the other one
became a doctor because of this tragedy. A lot has been touched and influenced so many
lives that ever after half-century has passed some still visit Karl’s grave.

4. How did this documentary “The Stranger at My Brother’s Grave: change your views of
history as a scientific discipline / or subject?

I believe that history is considered as science because in history we study about

the past, the events the took place. Is it to research or to investigate to come up with the
evidence to bring up the truth just like in science, it is also dealing with facts and truths.
History has primary and secondary resources while science believes in evidences.
