AERIAL APPLICATION : GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR USE AND PRECAUTIONS

FURADAN 480 F INSECTICIDE MAY BE APPLIED BY AIRCRAFT ONLY WHERE SPECIFICALLY

INDICATED UNDER THE USE INSTRUCTIONS ON THIS LABEL. CLOSED COCKPITS ARE
REQUIRED FOR ALL AERIAL APPLICATIONS OF FURADAN 480 F.

Apply only by fixed-wing or rotary aircraft equipment which has been functionally and operationally
calibrated for the atmospheric conditions of the area and the application rates and conditions of this label.
Apply only when meteorological conditions at the treatment site allow for complete and even crop
coverage. To avoid streaked, uneven or overlapped application, use appropriate marking devices.
HUMAN FLAGGING IS PROHIBITED.

For minimum spray volumes refer to ‘Recommended Applications’ for specific uses on this label.

OPERATOR PRECAUTIONS:
Do not allow the pilot to mix chemicals to be loaded onto the aircraft. Loading of premixed chemicals with a
closed system is permitted. It is desirable that the pilot has communication capabilities at each treatment site
at the time of application.

The field crew and the mixer/loaders must wear Personal Protective Equipment as outlined under
PRECAUTIONS on this label during mixing/loading, cleanup and repair. All personnel on the job site must

wash hands and face thoroughly before eating and drinking. Protective clothing, aircraft cockpit and vehicle
cabs must be decontaminated regularly.

USE PRECAUTIONS:
EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION DURING THE AERIAL APPLICATION OF ANY PESTICIDE:
Drift of pesticides is not always visible with the human eye. Small spray droplets may drift into sensitive
areas without obvious signs of danger. Apply only under conditions of good practice specific to aerial
application as outlined in the Basic Knowledge Requirements for Pesticide Education in Canada: Applicator
Core and Aerial Module, developed by CAPCO.

SPRAY DRIFT MANAGEMENT FOR AERIAL AND GROUND APPLICATIONS

For the protection of non-target habitats, overspray or drift to any body of water or other environmentally
sensitive habitats must be avoided. Do not apply under conditions where drift to an unprotected person(s),
occupied dwelling, or to food, forage, or other plantings can occur.

The interaction of many equipment- and weather-related factors determines the potential for spray drift.
AVOIDING SPRAY DRIFT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APPLICATOR. The best available
application technique, which minimizes off-target drift, should be used.

The applicator is responsible for considering all these factors when making application decisions.

1. DROPLET SIZE: An important factor influencing drift is the droplet size. Small droplets (<150 to 200
microns) drift to a greater extent than large droplets. Within typical equipment specifications,
applications should be made to deliver the largest droplet spectrum that provides sufficient control and
coverage. Formation of very small droplets may be minimized by appropriate nozzle selection, by
orienting nozzles away from the air stream as much as possible and by avoiding excessive spray boom
pressure.

CONTROLLING DROPLET SIZE - GENERAL TECHNIQUE

• Volume - Use high flow rate nozzles to apply the highest spray volume. Nozzles with higher rated
flows produce larger droplets.
• Pressure - Use the lowest spray pressures recommended for the selected nozzle. Higher pressure
reduces droplet size. When higher flow rates are needed use a higher capacity nozzle instead of
increasing pressure.
• Nozzle Type - Select nozzle designed for the intended application.

CONTROLLING DROPLET SIZE - AIRCRAFT

• Number of nozzles - Use minimum number with the highest flow rate that give coverage.
• Nozzle orientation - Backwards, parallel to the airsteam. This will produce larger droplets than
other orientations.
• Nozzle type - Use nozzle that is designed for intended purpose.

2. SPRAY BOOM: For aerial applications: the spray boom should be mounted on the aircraft so as to
minimize drift caused by wing tip vortices. The minimum practical boom length should be used and must
not exceed 75% of the wing span or rotor diameter.

For ground applications: Set the spray boom at the lowest possible height which provides uniform
coverage to reduce exposure of droplets to evaporation and wind.

3. SPRAY HEIGHT: For aerial applications, spray should be released at the lowest height consistent with
efficacy and flight safety. Applications more than 3 metres above the crop canopy should be avoided.

4. WIND: Do not apply during periods of dead calm (wind speed less than 5 km/hr), when winds are
gusty or when wind speed is greater than 15 km/hour at flying height at the site of application. Do not
spray when wind direction is toward any sensitive habitat area.

5. TEMPERATURE INVERSIONS: Do not make aerial or ground applications during temperature

inversions. Drift potential is high during temperature inversions. Temperature inversions restrict vertical
air mixing, which causes small suspended droplets to remain close to the ground and move laterally in a
cloud. Temperature inversions are characterized by increasing temperature with altitude and are common
on nights with limited cloud cover and light to no wind. They begin to form as the sun sets and often
continue into the morning. Their presence can be indicated by ground fog; however if fog is not
present, inversions can also be identified by the movement of smoke from a ground source. Smoke
that layers and moves laterally in a concentrated cloud (under low wind conditions) indicates an
inversion, while smoke that moves upward and rapidly dissipates indicates good vertical mixing.

6. HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE: Low humidity and high temperatures increase the evaporation
rate of spray droplets and therefore the likelihood of increased spray drift. Avoid spraying during
conditions of low humidity and/or high temperature.

RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

For resistance management, please note that FURADAN 480 F Insecticide contains a Group 1A insecticide.
Any insect population may contain individuals naturally resistant to FURADAN 480 F Insecticide and other
Group 1A insecticides. The resistant individuals may dominate the insect population if this group of
insecticides is used repeatedly in the same fields. Other resistance mechanisms that are not linked to site of
action, but specific for individual chemicals, such as enhanced metabolism, may also exist. Appropriate
resistance-management strategies should be followed.

To delay insecticide resistance:

• Where possible, rotate the use of FURADAN 480 F Insecticide or other Group 1A insecticides with
different groups that control the same pests in a field.
• Insecticide use should be based on an IPM program that includes scouting, record keeping, and
considers cultural, biological and other chemical control practices.
• Before spraying, correctly identify the pest and ensure economic and agronomic thresholds are met as
recommended by local provincial or IPM specialists. Observe provincial pest pressure guidelines.
• Monitor treated pest populations for resistance development. Do not use in areas where resistance to
FURADAN 480 F has been identified.
• Contact your local extension specialist or certified crop advisors for any additional pesticide
resistance-management and/or IPM recommendations for the specific site and pest problems in your
area.
• For further information or to report suspected resistance contact Bayer CropScience Inc. via internet at
www.bayercropscience.ca or phone 1-888-283-6847.

TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION: Carbofuran is a carbamate which is a cholinesterase

inhibitor. Typical symptoms of overexposure to cholinesterase inhibitors include malaise, muscle
weakness, dizziness and sweating. Headache, salivation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and
diarrhea are often prominent. A life-threatening poisoning is signified by loss of consciousness,
incontinence, convulsions and respiratory depression with a secondary cardiovascular component.
Treat symptomatically. If exposed, plasma and red blood cell cholinesterase tests may indicate
degree of exposure (baseline data are useful). However, if a blood sample is taken several hours
after exposure, it is unlikely that blood cholinesterase activities will be depressed, due to rapid
reactivation of cholinesterase. Atropine, only by injection, is the preferable antidote. Do not use
pralidoxime. In cases of severe acute poisoning, use antidotes immediately after establishing an
open airway and respiration. With oral exposure, the decision of whether to induce vomiting or not
should be made by an attending physician.

STORAGE: Keep in a safe cool place; prevent from freezing.

SPECIAL DIRECTIONS FOR ROOT MAGGOTS AND WIREWORM: As root maggots hatch
and live around the stems of plants and wireworms attack the developing plant, it is important
that the spray runs down the stem into the soil. Use one single nozzle over the centre of the row
and apply a coarse spray at low pressure. As the leaves of well-developed plants should act as a
funnel, do not spray a wider band than the width between the upright portions of the outer leaves.
GROWERS MUST EMPLOY TECHNIQUES (SUCH AS PROPANE GUNS) WHICH ARE
RECOGNIZED TO EFFECTIVELY REDUCE BIRD USE IN TREATED AREAS FOR 2
DAYS AFTER PESTICIDE APPLICATION.

PRECAUTIONS
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. Call a doctor or Poison Control Center in case of
accident. Fatal or poisonous if swallowed or inhaled. DO NOT breathe sprays or mists. May be
fatal or harmful as a result of eye or skin contact or by breathing spray mist.

Use a respirator of a type suitable for carbofuran protection, such as American Optical Respirator
6058 or Willson Agritox Respirator. Follow manufacturer's instructions for respirator care and use.

Do not get in eyes. Wear goggles or face shield during mixing and loading. Prevent contact with the
skin. Wear coveralls over long sleeved shirt and long pants, chemical resistant gloves, socks and
chemical resistant footwear during mixing, loading, application, clean-up and repair. Wash hands
and face after handling and before drinking, eating or smoking. Wash hands before relieving
bladder. Bathe at the end of the workday. Change clothing daily and wash it before reuse. Change
clothing immediately if carbofuran is spilled or sprayed on clothing, and wash all contaminated skin
surfaces immediately with soap and water. Keep all articles of protective equipment clean.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS :
Do not apply or allow to drift to areas occupied by unprotected human or beneficial animals. Do
not contaminate feed or foodstuffs. Keep out of areas inhabited by fish, birds and wildlife, as this
