MANU: THE VIRGIN JUNGLE

The Manu National Park is one of the wilderness destinations in


Peruvian Jungle and most acclaimed by national and .
This National Park of almost 2 million hectares was created in
1973. It is located in the southeast of Peru, specifically in the
departments of Madre de Dios and Cuzco.
Here, life can be witnessed in its purest form: 221 species of
mammals, hundreds of bird species and a variety of ecosystems.
Manu National Park is also home to indigenous populations who
have remained their traditions and live-in complete isolation.
FAUNA:
The MNP is home to a large number of wildlife species.
About 160 species of mammals, more than 1,000 species
of birds (mostly resident), about 140 species of
amphibians, 50 species of snakes, 40 species of lizards, 6
species of turtles, 3 species of caimans, and 210 species of
fish
Among the large mammals are the otorongo the black
tiger, the sachavaca, the huangana , the peccary ,the deer
the ashy deer , the giant otter , the ronsoco ,the coto
monkey, the black maquisapa, the choro monkey , the
white howler monkey and the black howler monkey.

FLORA:
Regarding the flora of the MNP, the number of plant
species is very high. The various records indicate
that there are at least 162 families, and 4,385
identified species. In a single hectare, up to 250
varieties of trees have been found. The aguajal
forests are one of the most outstanding ecosystems,
where the aguaje and huasaí palms are the dominant
species.
NATIVE COMUNITIES
Much of the park is indigenous territory. Here live 30 peasant
communities that maintain the Quechua language as their
mother tongue and several native Amazonian populations such
as the Matsiguenka, Amahuaca, Yine, Amarakaeri,
Huashipaire and Nahua peoples. In addition, there are
indigenous populations in voluntary isolation called
uncontacted.

tourists, 85% of which are foreigners.
