• In giving the translation of verbal expressions and equations, we must know the
words or phrases associated with each operation.
• There is a need to understand the phrase or sentence, so the correct interpretation
can be done right away.

Let’s Apply
Underline the keywords in the following verbal expression then translate into an algebraic
expression or equation. Use the variable in parentheses.
1. seventy more than a number (a) _______________________
2. fourteen diminished by a number (b) _______________________
3. a number increased by seven (c) _______________________

Let’s Analyze
Translate the following into a verbal expression.
1. 25 + h _____________________________________________
2. 22 – s = 6 _____________________________________________
3. _____________________________________________
Lesson 2: Defines a variable in an algebraic equation and expression

Let’s Recall (Review)

Translate the following into a verbal expression.
1. 30 + s _____________________________________________
2. 3n = 15 _____________________________________________
3. s2 − 16 _____________________________________________
4. 22 – r = 6 _____________________________________________
5. 144 = 12t _____________________________________________

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that encompasses numbers,
variables, operations and grouping symbols.
In the algebraic expression 3s – 10, 3 is the numerical coefficient, s is the literal coefficient
or variable, - is the operator and 10 is the constant.
A numerical coefficient is a number that is used to multiply with the variable. A variable or
the literal coefficient can be any letter in the English alphabet is used to represent a number
that we do not know yet or needs to be solved.
An operator is any of the four fundamental operations such as addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division.
A constant is an exact number in the algebraic expression.
Other examples of algebraic expression:
1. 6n + 16 (In 6n +16, 6 is the numerical coefficient, n is the variable, + is the operator
and 16 is the constant.)
2. 4p (In 4p, 4 is the numerical coefficient, p is the variable)
3. 10 – (b ÷ 4) (In 10 – (b ÷ 4), 10 and 4 are the constants, b is the variable, 1 is the
numerical coefficient of b and the operators are – and ÷.)
A term is either a single number, a variable, a constant multiplied by another variable.
Each term is separated by the operators such as + and -. If a term is made up of a constant
multiplied to a variable/s, this constant is called a numerical coefficient and the variable can
be called literal coefficient.
1. 6n + 16 There are 2 terms in 6n + 6. The terms are 6n and 16.
2. 4p There is only 1 term in 4p.
3. 10 – (b ÷ 4) There are 2 terms in 10 – (b ÷ 4).
The terms are 10 and (b ÷4).
An algebraic equation is a mathematical sentence consisting two equal algebraic
expressions. It is made up of algebraic expressions on the left and right side of the
equal sign.
In the algebraic equation 3n + 15 = 7 x 3, the algebraic expression on the left of the equal
sign is 3n + 15, while the algebraic expression on the right side of the equal sign is 7 x 3.

• An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that encompasses

numbers, variables, operations and grouping symbols.

• An algebraic equation is a mathematical sentence consisting two equal

algebraic expressions.
