4th Part Environment and Society
Societies adapt and transform the environments they inhabit. They depend upon the
use of resources and reduction of hazards for their survival and material well-being.
They also assign meanings to the environment that vary over place and time, but that
help define their identity and values within the world.
Engineers have begun to evolve from those who characterize, manage, and remediate
existing environmental problems to those who develop new knowledge, design
innovative technologies and strategies, and implement solutions that prevent
environmental problems.
• Waste Production
• Population Growth
• Water Pollution
• Deforestation
• Urban Sprawl
• Acid Rain
• Air Pollution
• Soil Degradation
• Global Warming
• Natural Resource Depletion
Waste production – Waste production can be lessened if we recycle wastes and use
them as a material. Best example is steel, copper and aluminum since these are widely
used and reused.
Urban sprawl - Engineers and policymakers react to problems as they arise. Engineers
solve the problems of traffic jams and urban sprawl with new and improved highways,
packed with the latest technology to monitor traffic conditions, but not reduce backups
Acid rain - A great way to reduce acid rain is to produce energy without using fossil
fuels. Instead, people can use renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind
power. Renewable energy sources help reduce acid rain because they produce much
less pollution.
Global warming - Engineers develop new technologies that reduce our environmental
footprint such as solar panels and hydrogen fuel cells or that are involved in the efficient
manufacturing of these technologies.
Natural resource depletion - Engineers use their knowledge and skills to improve or
maintain the sustainability of natural resource use through the creative design and wise
application of technology.
