VI (To be written in copy)
Subject: Science

EXERCISE (to be written in copy)

Q1. Classify the following fibres as natural or synthetic :
nylon, wool, cotton, silk, polyester, jute
Answer : Natural Fibres - wool, cotton, silk, jute
Synthetic Fibres- nylon, polyester

Q2. State whether the following statements are true or false: (mark/write the answers in book only)
a) Yarn is made from fibres. (True)
b) Spinning is a process of making fibres. (false)
c) Jute is the outer covering of coconut. (false)
d) The process of removing seed from cotton is called ginning. (true)
e) Weaving of yarn makes a piece of fabric. (true)
f) Silk fiber is obtained from the steam of a plant. (false)
g) Polyester is a natural fiber. (false)

Q3. Fill in the blanks: (write the answers in book only)

a) Plants fibres are obtained from jute and cotton.
b) Animal fibres are silk and wool.

Q4. From which part of plant cotton and jute are obtained?
Answer : Cotton fibres are obtained from the fruit of the cotton plant, called cotton balls. Jute fibre is
obtained from the stem of the jute plant.

Q5. Name two items that are made from coconut fibre.
Answer : The two items that are made from coconut fibre are coir and doormat.

Q6. Explain the process of making yarn from fibre.

Answer : Yarns are made up of thin strands called fiber. The process of making yarn from fiber is called
spinning. In this process fibers from a mass of cotton wool are drawn out and twisted, this brings fibers
together to form a yarn.
EXTRA QUESTIONS (to be written in copy)
Q1. What are natural fibers? Give example.
Answer: The fibers that are obtained from plant and animal sources are called natural fibers.
For example: wool cotton etc.

Q2. What are the two processes by which different fabric can be made?
Answer: The two processes by which different fabric can be made are weaving and knitting.

Q3. What are synthetic fibers? Give example.

Answer : The fibre which are not obtained from plants and animals but are made up of chemical substances
are called synthetic fibres.
For example: nylon, polyester.

Q4. Write short notes on spinning weaving and ginning.

Answer - Spinning: Spinning is the process of making yarn from fiber. It can be done by hand using simple
devices like takli and charkha. On large-scale, spinning is done by a spinning machine.
Ginning : Ginning is the process of separating cotton fibers from their seeds. It is done by hand
using a comb or by ginning machine.
Weaving : The process of arranging two sets of yarn together to make a fabric is called weaving. It is
done by looms. The Looms are either hand operated or power operated.

Q5. Describe how jute is obtained from a jute plant.

Answer - Jute fiber is obtained from the stem of the plant. It is cultivated during the rainy season. In India, jute
is mainly grown in West Bengal, Bihar and Assam. The jute plant is normally harvested when it is at
flowering stage. The stem of the harvested plant is immersed in water for a few days. The stem, roots and
fibers are separated by hand to make fabrics. All these fibers are first converted into yarns.
