HISTORY OF FASHION ACCESSORY

In the Philippines, fashion styles of Filipinos largely depend on the culture, nature of
community and even the weather a certain location mostly experiences, from Luzon, Visayas
and Mindanao. It preserves the identity especially the native Filipinos which is quite
traditional and antique style of fashion as taught by our great ancestors many years ago.
Despite of emerging technologies, other people such as those who are living in the mountain
still uphold the values and culture they inherited from their predecessor.
Still, fashion accessories are continuously evolving and keep on innovating. Before,
not all can wear fashion accessories, but at present it was totally different since it became
more accessible, whether young or old, girls or boys are patronizing the use of fashion
accessories. Either you came from upper class family or not, you can have the accessories
you want and mix it up with your own fashion style. Wide varieties of materials are available
in the market and if you are patient enough, you can eye materials cheaper in price but of
good quality.
Fashion accessories are decorative items that supplement and complement clothes
such as jewelry, gloves, handbags, hats, belts, scarves, watches, sunglasses, pins,
stockings, bow ties, leg warmers, leggings, neckties, suspenders, and tights.

Accessories can add color, style and class to an outfit, and create a certain look, but
they can also have a practical function: handbags can be used to carry small items such as
cash, hats protect the face in bad weather, and gloves keep hands warm. Moreover,
accessories can be a representation of religious affiliation such as Jewish stars, Crucifixes,
headscarves and turbans.
Over the centuries, fashion accessories have changed and evolved. Look into the
developments and evolution of this category of fashion from the 1950s to our current date.
1950’s

Mid-century, fashion took a drastic turn. The war had ended and a new decade with
new confidence had begun. A women’s figure is celebrated in the clothing designs and
accessories, with designers catering to new trends and new demands. The feminine shape
took center stage with tight waists and high hemlines, a trend that set the tone for classic
and timeless looks – then and now.

1960’s

The 1960’s can be characterized as an era of social movements and fashion

innovations that are still worn today. Vibrant colors with psychedelic prints, and chic vintage

handbags characterized the underground scene, especially within the music industry.

Topping off the unique fashion styles, women wore incredible hairstyles that defined the
decade that made it into hit films.
1970’s

Typical items of this decade included miniskirts, bell-bottom pants that were
popularized by hippies, vintage clothing made a debut, and glam rock and disco trends
introduced fashion staples such as satin, glitter, and bright colors

1980’s

Fashion in the 80’s was characterized by unforgettable trends, some that are still
worn today, but others that are not. The trends of this decade included tights, leotards,
sweatpants, velour tracksuits, and the quintessential ripped jeans – which are still a fashion
statement today. In addition, athletic accessories were also extremely popular, a trend
boosted by the aerobics craze of the 80’s.
1990’s

3
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
REGION IV-A CALABARZON
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS

The 1990’s took a turn away from the opulent and vibrant previous decades, in favor
of more minimalist fashion trends. As with decades before, the 90’s were heavily influenced
by music, particularly rock and grunge music. Much like the band members seen on MTV,
women wore casual daywear such as jeans and t-shirts. The 90’s fashion scene remains
among the most seen fashion trends today as new generations embrace the styles of the
end of the century, a statement of both the end and beginning of a new century.

Wrapped Loops
There are many situations where you might want to use wrapped loops instead of a
plain loop. Sometimes a large wrapped loop attached to a beautiful pendant can make a
lovely focal point for a necklace. With designs that call for small beads on nail head wires,
you might want the bead to be snug against the nail bead so it doesn’t move on the wire. IF
the bead is not flush with the nail head, the heads can catch on clothing. This is where
wrapped loop is ideal. I used this technique in my Mixed Shell Bracelet.

Step 1. Using needle nose pliers, hold the wire firmly above the
head.

Step 2. Create a 90-degree bend in the wire by pushing against

the pliers with your finger.

Step 3. With round nose pliers, grasp the wire inside the angle.

Step 4. Bend the wire over the top of the round nose pliers using
your hand. This will create one side of your loop.

Step 5. Seat your pliers snugly into the curve you just created,
grasping the top of the loop.

19
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
REGION IV-A CALABARZON
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS

Step 6. With your hand, bend the wire straight down to curve
around the shape of the bottom pliers.

Step7. Pull the tail of the wire past the 90degree angle.

Step 8. Hold the loop securely with the flat nose pliers. Use
another pair of pliers to wrap the tail around the wire. For a better
view, my photo shows the tip of the pliers at the end of the wire.
But the ideal position is to place the boarder part of the pliers close
to the wrap to make it easier to work with. If you try to wrap as
pictured here, you may end up with small bends in the wire. Also
don’t try to wrap around on one motion. Move the needle nose
pliers from one side other as necessary.

Step 9. When wrap is complete, you will have a wire tail that needs
to be trimmed.

Step 10. Use wire cutters to snip off the tail as close to the wrap
as possible.

Step 11. Use the crimp tool or needle pliers to flatten the cut end of
wire to the wrap.

Learning Task 21: Analyze the listed steps in making wrapped loops and arrange them in
correct sequence. Write your answer in your answer sheet

Spirals are a special way to add interest to any of jewelry like my Purple Passion
Pendant. Combine spirals to create interesting and ornate designs. While they may look
complicated, wire spirals are simple to create. If you plan to do a lot of this work, you
might want to buy a pair of plastic nose pliers. They are great for handling softer wire and
won’t leave bite marks or strip the finish especially when creating spirals.

Step 1. Grab one end of wire and make a curve with

the very tip of round nose pliers.

Step 2. Hold the curve securely with flat nose pliers

and smooth the wire into shape with your fingers.
Step 3. Work in small increments, turning with the

Step 2. Grasp the wire about 75” from one end. Bend the
wire into a 90- degree angle

Step 3. With the round nose pliers, grasp the wire firmly at
the angle. With your free hand, wrap the wires short end
over the top of the pliers so it extends straight.

Step 4. Remove the pliers and re-position them so the

bottom of the tool is seated in the curve you just created.
With your free hand, bend the wires short end so its
pointing straight down.

Step 5. There should now be tail that extend down past

the 90-degree angle, with the wire cutters, clip the tail off
slightly above the point of the angle.

Step 6. With flat nose pliers, firmly grasp only the circle
you’ve created. Do not include the bend of 90-degree
angle. Pull the straight wire toward the circle opening to
close the gap. This changes the 90- degree angle, closes
the opening in the circle, and creates a perfectly round
loop/eye at the end of the wire.

Learning Task 25 : Arrange the steps in using Wire Loop Eye Technique by writing A for
the first step, B for the next and so on. Write the answers in your answer sheet.

Types of Beadwork/ Beading Techniques

There are many different types of beadwork. In the most general sense, beadwork is
any type of work with beads. Commonly recognized forms of beadwork include bead
stringing, off-loom bead weaving, bead looming, bead embroidery, braiding with beads, and

wire wrapping with beads. There are others, but those are some of the most common types
of beadwork.

1, Bead Stringing

 It is the most straightforward form of beadwork, but

that doesn't mean it is the simplest.
 It involves adding beads to any type of thread, cord,
elastic, leather, beading wire or similar material.
 The resulting beadwork can be a single strand,
multiple strands, or braided strands. The beads may
be separated with knots, such as pearls often are, or
other spacer beads.
 Stringing beads on an elastic cord is a great way to
get started making beaded bracelets.
 Stringing beads on beading wire is a great way to
make necklaces, bracelets or even earrings.

2.Off-Loom Bead weaving

 It is done by using a needle and thread to stitch tiny

beads together
 It is most often done with small beads called seed
beads. These beads were named because of their
resemblance to seeds.

3.Bead Embroidery

26
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
REGION IV-A CALABARZON
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS

 is another type of beadwork where beads are

stitched or sewn onto a fabric or backing. There are
several types of bead embroidery stitches, and bead
embroidery can be used either by itself or in
conjunction with another craft such as cross-stitch or
quilting.
 is one of several beadwork techniques favored by
Native Americans for embellishing clothing and other
items.
4.Braiding with Beads
 Bead knitting, bead crochet, kumihimo with beads,
and macrame with beads are also considered
beadwork. To do bead knitting or bead crochet, the
beads are first strung onto a heavy thread in a
particular pattern and are then incorporated into the
knitting or crochet. Kumihimo is a style of braiding
that uses a disk, but the beads are also strung in
advance of braiding. Macrame is a knotting
technique that can incorporate beads into the overall
design.
5.Wire Wrapping with Beads

 is one of the most secure ways to connect beads

and findings.

Flat Beads with Hole Beading Scissors Stringing Wax Cords

This technique is very suitable for flat beads with a hole in the middle, but you could
apply this technique to regular beads, such as roundels, to give your piece of jewelry an
original and fun look.

STEPS/ PROCEDURES

STEP 1 Take two pieces of wax cord of the same length; the wires
must be long enough for a piece of jewelry (keep in mind that
due to the knots and the stringing technique the cords will
become quite a bit shorter). Make a knot in the cords together
at at least 3cm from the ends of the cords (when combining
this stringing technique with another stringing technique, you
should make the knot farther from the end).
STEP 2
Thread one wax cord from one side through a flat bead with a
hole in the middle and thread the other wax cord from the
opposite side through the hole of the flat bead.

STEP 3
String the bead on the cords until it hits the knot and make
another knot with the two cords together at the other side of
the bead.

STEP 4

String one or two beads on the cords either separately or

together and make a knot in the cords together.

STEP 5

Repeat steps 2 and 3 (and if preferred step 4) until the piece of

jewelry has reached the desired length.

STEP 6 You could decide to partly use this technique in your jewelry
design (for example in the middle). After using this technique,
you could continue with stringing beads on the wires
separately.

IDENTIFYING FASHION ACCESSORY COST COMPONENT

The purchasing procedure below is generally followed:
1. Determining Purchase Budget-prepares a purchase budget that contains detailed
information regarding quantity to be purchased, quality of materials, time of purchase and
the sources of procurement. A schedule of materials and components needed for various

42
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
REGION IV-A CALABARZON
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS

jobs, known as bill of materials, is also prescribed for working out details of purchase budget.
A bill of materials is also useful in exercising control over the utilization of materials.
2. Receipt of Purchase Requisition-a form used as a formal request to the purchasing
department to purchase materials.
3. Determining Sources of Supply-determines the quantity of the supply of a certain
material.
4. Placing Order-a formal purchase order is sent for the supply of goods.

It is also good to remember the different things to consider in buying a certain

handicraft material. Some of the key factors that you need to consider before purchasing
includes list of materials to purchase and budget or capital allotted to it. It is needed that we
need to prepare the list of materials before purchasing since it saves time, effort and money.
We cannot afford to go back and forth to the market/handicraft supply shop if we forgot
something to purchase. Remember, we have allotted budget to consider also.
In addition, costs, quality and/or aesthetic appeal of the product and supply in the
market are also considered. It is important also to have a big consideration with the quality of
materials we are buying. We cannot build a good business reputation to the customer if we
cannot assure the quality of it. We should also take into consideration the availability of the
supply of the said materials. With this, we can save a lot of money and time going anywhere
just to buy the needed materials.
Ideally, you should look for products that cannot run out of stock or comprise the
environment. It is advisable to choose materials made from replaceable or renewable
sources.
Out of these purchasing matter, it is also good to hear about the business
opportunities that the handicraft product making is offering. If you have artistic skills and
crafty hobbies or an interest in building a business around creative arts and crafts industry,
why not choose from one of these arts and crafts business ideas to get you inspired? The
trick in starting a business in arts and crafts industry is your passion, artistic workmanship
and creative ideas. There are so many ways you can start a business around arts and crafts
industry: making handy crafts, selling handmade hard goods, selling your knowledge and
services to others. There are also many avenues to sell your products: craft shows, flea
markets, stand-alone shops, online shops and even at home parties.

Learning Task 21:
1. Beading Method or Bead Work & Using Pliers Method
2. Beadwork is the art or craft of attaching beads to one another by stringing them
with a sewing needle or beading needle and thread or thin wire or sewing them to
cloth while using pliers is one of the methods that can be applied in making
fashion accessories. Variety of pliers is required in order to facilitate the task;

55
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
REGION IV-A CALABARZON
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS

these are used for holding and griping varied findings and ornaments in making
fashion accessories.

Learning Task 22:

Step 1. Using needle nose pliers, hold the wire firmly above the head.
Step 2. Create a 90-degree bend in the wire by pushing against the pliers with your
finger
Step 3. With round nose pliers, grasp the wire inside the angle.
Step 4. Bend the wire over the top of the round nose pliers using your hand. This will
create one side of your loop.
Step 5. Seat your pliers snugly into the curve you just created, grasping the top of the
loop.
Step 6. With your hand, bend the wire straight down to curve around the shape of the
bottom pliers.
Step7. Pull the tail of the wire past the 90degree angle.
Step 8. Hold the loop securely with the flat nose pliers. Use another pair of pliers to
wrap the tail around the wire. For a better view, my photo shows the tip of the pliers at
the end of the wire. But the ideal position is to place the boarder part of the pliers close
to the wrap to make it easier to work with. If you try to wrap as pictured here, you may
end up with small bends in the wire. Also don’t try to wrap around on one motion. Move
the needle nose pliers from one side other as necessary.
Step 9. When wrap is complete, you will have a wire tail that needs to be trimmed.
Step 10. Use wire cutters to snip off the tail as close to the wrap as possible.
Step 11. Use the crimp tool or needle pliers to flatten the cut end of wire to the wrap.

1. Beadwork is any type of work with beads.
2. Commonly recognized forms of beadwork include bead stringing, off-loom bead
weaving, bead looming, bead embroidery, braiding with beads, and wire
wrapping with beads.
 Bead Stringing - It is the most straightforward form of beadwork, but that doesn't
mean it is the simplest.
 Off-Loom Bead weaving - It is done by using a needle and thread to stitch tiny beads
together
 Bead Embroidery - is another type of beadwork where beads are stitched or sewn
onto a fabric or backing.
 Braiding with Beads - Bead knitting, bead crochet, kumihimo with beads, and
macrame with beads are also considered beadwork.
 Wire Wrapping with Beads - is one of the most secure ways to connect beads and
findings

Learning Task 33:

1. Stringing flat beads with a hole in the middle is a technique that is very suitable for
flat beads with a hole in the middle, and could apply to regular beads, such as
roundels, to give your piece of jewelry an original and fun look.

57
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
REGION IV-A CALABARZON
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BATANGAS

2. The materials used for this technique are flat beads with hole, beading scissors and
stringing wax cords.
3. To perform this technique, we….
 Step 1 Take two pieces of wax cord of the same length; the wires must be long
enough for a piece of jewelry (keep in mind that due to the knots and the stringing
technique the cords will become quite a bit shorter). Make a knot in the cords
together at at least 3cm from the ends of the cords (when combining this stringing
technique with another stringing technique, you should make the knot farther from
the end).
 Step 2 Thread one wax cord from one side through a flat bead with a hole in the middle
and thread the other wax cord from the opposite side through the hole of the flat bead.
 Step 3 String the bead on the cords until it hits the knot and make another knot with the
two cords together at the other side of the bead.
 Step 4 String one or two beads on the cords either separately or together and make a
knot in the cords together.
 Step 5 Repeat steps 2 and 3 (and if preferred step 4) until the piece of jewelry has
reached the desired length.
 Step 6 You could decide to partly use this technique in your jewelry design (for example
in the middle). After using this technique, you could continue with stringing beads on the
wires separately.
