Hamelin was a peaceful town where the people _____ (live) happily together. But
one day, thousands of rats _____ (come) into the town! They were noisy and
fierce, and they ____ (eat) all the food they ____ (can) find.
Soon there was very little food for the people. They ______ (go) to see the Mayor
and ____ (ask) him to get rid of the rats. The Mayor didn't want to spend any
money, so he ______ (think) of a clever plan.
The Mayor __________ (announce) that a big reward of 1,000 gold coins
________ (will) go to the person who ______ (can) get rid of the rats. Posters
were put on walls and trees through the town, and the news quickly _______
(spread) through the land.
Soon people _____ (come) from far and near to get rid of the rats. For weeks they
______ (try) to catch and kill all the rats, but there was just too many of them.
The Mayor _____ (grow) worried because the people ____ (have) no more food.
Then one day, a strange man _____ (come) into town. He was dressed in a red and
blue cloak, and he ________ (carry) a long, thin pipe.
He _____ (go) to the Mayor and _____ (say), "I am called the Pied Piper, and I can
get rid of your rats."
"If you can do that said the Mayor, "the money is yours!"
The Pied Piper _______ (step) out on the street and _______ (begin) playing a
tune on his pipe. At once, the rats ______ (start) coming out from everywhere and
____ (run) towards him! There were so many rats that the town was filled with an
awful scuttling sound. The people ______ (come) out to see what was happening.
They were amazed to see the rats following the Pied Piper down the street!
The Pied Piper _______ (walk) and ________ (skip) through the town as he
______ (play) his pipe. When he _______ (reach) the river, he ________ (step)
into a boat and ________ (float) away from the shore. All of the rats _______
(jump) into the water after him and ______ (drown). The Piper then _____ (go) to
collect his reward.
But the Mayor never _______ (plan) to give away the l, 1,000 gold coins. He
________ (refuse) to pay the Pied Piper his reward. He ____ (say), "The rats
have gone away by themselves and now you can go, too!"
The Pied Piper was very angry, and he ______ (tell) the Mayor, "You will be sorry
for breaking your promise!" Then he _____ (go) out into the street and _____
(lift) the pipe to his lips. He ________ (start) playing a different tune on it.
This time, all the children of Hamelin ______ (come) running out to listen to the
Pied Piper. They ________ (laugh) and ______ (sing) and _____ (dance) as they
followed him.
The piper quickly _____ (lead) the dancing children past the river and fields
before their parents even ______ (know) what had __________ (happen). The
people _____ (keep) calling out their children's names, but not one of them
_________ (answer). The children soon ______ (come) to a huge mountain.
The towns people _______ (wait) day after day for their children to return, but
sadly they were never seen again. The angry people ______ (chase) away the
Mayor for not paying the piper. Without the children, Hamelin ________ (become)
a very quiet, sad little town.
