Tips For Personal Statement and Study Plan
It is an essay about yourself, so you cannot copy other person’s contents. However,
you can learn from others the way you have to structure the yours. The structure
really matters, because the selecting team pays a strong attention on the Personal
Statement, and an interesting and unique one makes them (the selecting team)
interested in your story. One of the ways to try making a good structure is to write
about the requested things starting with the ones you met or did earlier. You can also
talk about 2 subjects in the same paragraph if you are finding them linked to each
other. I will give an example about how I organized my Personal Statement.
By starting, one can begin with a verse, quote or any famous saying related to his Personal Statement.
(e.g: “When we are out of sympathy with the young, then I think our work in this world is over.”- George
MacDonald, Scottish Christian minister.)
You can give a brief introduction, introduce yourself a bit like only your names, and then for me, I went
on talking about my family and education background since I found them related, as my early life was
about living at home with my parents & siblings linked with going to school. Note that in the family
background, you can talk about the individual or collective challenge you had in the family that you were
able to overcome, and in the education background you talk about your performance since Middle
school till the time you are applying.
I continued with talking about people and events that have a significant influence on me and linked it
with the extracurricular activities I did. For me, the two were related to each other, because I was
influenced by people and events to do some extracurricular activities. You can start saying how things
were before hearing of these people or knowing these events, talk about the changes you carried out
after knowing these people and events (the changes were engaging myself in extracurricular
activities), and talk about the positive effects that came as a result of the changes you took after
learning from the people or/and the events. Extracurricular activities may be the taken leadership
positions, competitions, camps, etc. But please mention those for which you will be able to present their
certificates.
Last, I talked about the reason why I am interested in GKS. I started saying my individual objectives (I
talked a bit about my future plans), and tried to explain how they are related to the GKS objective. You
can also say why you are interested in Korea (talk about the Korean culture, Korean people, the
country’s development, etc.) I also talked about how once given the scholarship, carrying out the
objectives will bring benefit to me, my home country, Korea, and the whole world in general.
Study plan
Briefly, here you get to talk about the readiness and plans you have about studying in
Korea. Since, you will have to take your degree after learning the Korean language, you
surely have to talk about the two. For those applying for Undergraduate degree, our
Study Plan was divided into 3 sections, and I will try to talk about them.
