    June 2011 For immediate release Leeds Met hosts Taiwanese Scholars

    Leeds Metropolitan University is welcoming a party of Taiwanese students and cultural sector professionals to take part in the first Cultural Tourism Summer School in July.

    The Summer School, which begins on Monday 4 July and will be based at the Universitys Headingley Campus, includes visits to major cultural tourism sites in Yorkshire: Leeds City Museum, the Harrogate International Festival, the World Heritage Site at Saltaire, Sheffields Cultural Quarter and the city of York. The purpose of the visit is to find out about cultural tourism and good practice in the UK and to share knowledge with the University. The Summer School will be an intensive programme of lectures, seminars and workshops combined with the site visits which will be accompanied by guest speakers. Professor Mike Robinson, who has designed the Summer School, said: It will be a pleasure to welcome these Taiwanese scholars to Leeds and to Yorkshire. For many years I have been speaking in Taiwan about how the cultural sector works in the UK and how it interfaces with the tourism sector. Now these students and professionals will be able to see this at first hand. We are grateful to all of our partners in the cultural sector in Leeds and in the wider region for their inputs into this programme. This event also provides a learning opportunity for us, as for the majority of our Taiwanese visitors this

    will be their first trip to the UK. It will be fascinating to see what they make of our culture!

    Philip Long, Principal Lecturer in Tourism and Entertainment Management, added: We hope that the programme will result in the development of long term relationships with our colleagues in Taiwan both for Leeds Met ropolitan and also for the tourism and cultural sectors in the region .

    The Summer School is the result of a close relationship which the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change at Leeds Metropolitan has developed with the National Taipei University of Education in Taiwan over a number of years. The 25 visitors are practitioners and academics in the cultural sector, including symphony orchestras, libraries and galleries, and most are also studying a postgraduate qualification in Taiwan.

    A regular series of summer schools will follow with contacts in other countries being invited to attend a programme in 2012.
