Analyzing Elements Influencing
Lesson
Local & International Business
1 Environment using PEST &
SWOT Strategies

Imagine a turtle living in a volcano, a monkey in the sea, or a human living on the
moon. It just doesn’t make sense, these animals will neither be able to function
properly nor live at all. They would die of hunger, too much heat, and even
homesickness. They are very much like managers, without the proper conditions,
managers are also less productive if they even have progress at all. The animals
and managers have this in common, something we call environment. As you’ve
learned in your many years of schooling, an environment is made up of many
factors such as climate, population, food resources.

In this lesson, you will learn about the parallel factors of environments in the
business aspect. You will learn to identify whether they help increase your
profitability or badly injure your odds at a certain expansion through two
strategies: SWOT and PEST Analysis.

What’s In

In your past lessons, you have learned the different roles, functions, and skills of a
manager. You also know that a manager plays a huge function the business
environment, it’s just that there are certain eligibility for managers, everything
according to the hierarchy of which they belong in. A Top-level Manager does all
the jobs to head the whole organization whom also supervises the Middle-level
Managers whose job is to monitor all departments and look for problems that may
arise in the market, they are the head of Firstline Managers that then head a
designated department made of different teams whom are the led by mangers called
Team Leaders, they resolve internal conflicts between the employees.

Managers also have different functions from solving day-to-day conflicts to

processing the expansion of a certain aspect. In order for them to carry out such
functions, managers are expected to have a skill set made of:

Technical Skills – the intellect and wit that understands the market trend
and can run an organization accordingly.

4
Interpersonal Skills – an organization is not an organization if only the
executives survive, for an organization to thrive, one must build a good and
sufficient environment for the employees. Thereby, managers must be able to keep
a strong rapport between his employees and resolve conflicts.

Conceptual and Diagnostic skills – they go hand-in-hand to keep the

organization’s flow smooth, they must resolve market flux and keep a steady pace
of improvement to prevent or avoid any discrepancies in within the organization.

Notes to the Teacher

Begin the lesson by doing Activity 1. Let the students answer the
worksheet in a separate sheet of paper for them to familiarize
important terms in the lesson.

international environment. It is important that the students have
a prior knowledge of which ones are local and which ones are
international.

6
Activity 1.2: Case Analysis
Directions: After identifying these local and international factors, you are given a
case study below:

CASE

internationalization? Discuss the relevant factors in the international
environment that will affect Charlotte’s job and company performance based on
the following data:

Through the blog of her friend, Regina, mother’s residing in Malaysia,

Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore are requesting Charlotte to design and sew
dresses for their 2- to- 4 year old daughters. Charlotte’s determination to
continue her business was boosted by this influx of foreign customers alongside
her local customers. Through this added international involvement through
Regina’s blog, a diverse base of customers can be built whose demand can
translate to more revenues.

What is It

By now, you will understand the milieus or environment that a business operates.

Various Forms of Doing Business

1. According to Nature of Ownership
 Sole or Single Proprietorship – owned by 1 person. This is the easiest form of
business to start, set-up, and disseminate. All decisions come from the
owner and all the profits go to him as well but this proprietorship has limited
resources. He is liable to pay all the business debts and the existence of the
business exists only during his lifetime, the owner’s death, insanity, or
imprisonment means termination.
 Partnership – owned by 2/ more persons. These persons agree to divide
resources such as money, property, and skills needed to operate the
business and also the profit. It is also easy to form but has more resources
than a sole proprietorship. However, a partner may be held liable for each
other’s actions. The partnership may be dissolved by a change of partner
due to a disagreement, insanity, or death of a partner.
 Corporation – owned by many people called shareholders. The form the
business as an artificial person under the operation of its Articles of
Incorporation and Corporate By-Laws registered with the Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC). Shareholders are not liable for unpaid debts. It
can exist even if shareholder withdraw, change, or die. However, it is very
costly to organize and is taxed at a flat rate.

2. According to Primary Activities

 Service business – offers non-tangible products or service in exchange for a
fee.

8
 Manufacturing Business – engages in the purchase and sale of goods and
earns profit by adding a mark-up to the cost of goods it is selling.
 Merchandising Business – it transforms raw materials into finished goods
that are sold for a price.
Business Operations and the Environment
The course of daily operations is affected by forces or elements in the firm’s
environment that presents opportunities or obstacles as perceived by a manager.

EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT
Is the level of the environment that includes factors from OUTSIDE THE
ORGANIZATION.

1. General Environment – This is an external environment that usually affects

the business in the long run broadly classified as:
 Politico-legal Element – are elements related to government affairs and laws
or regulations. It involves factors such as: government, industry regulations,
passage of laws, and politics.
 Social Element – are elements related to societal characteristics? It involves
factors such as: demographics and values of people.
 Economic Element – are elements related to the use and allocation of limited
resources in the economy to create and distribute wealth. It involves factors
such as: interest rates, price inflations, stock market fluctuations, exchange
rates, incomes, business cycle, and phase of economic development.
 Technological Element – are elements related to new tools, ideas, and
approaches used to produce goods and services. It involves: New gadgets,
procedures, and equipment.

9
2. Operating Environment – also known as specific environment is an
external environment that has a direct and immediate impact on the
organization classified as:
 Customer element – are elements related to individuals or entities who BUYS
goods and services offered by the organization.

its offered products.
 Competitor element – are elements related to those who THREATENS the
organization’s battle for resources and customers or markets.
 Pressure Groups element – are elements related to special interest groups
the try to INFLUENCE the actions of an organization through their

Is the level of the environment that is WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION.

 Structure – the place an organization runs to the hierarchy of member from

shareholders to the employees
 Culture – is how an organization responds to different factors.
 Resources – includes production technology and physical facilities.

Among the elements of internal environment, corporate culture is run by managers

with Cultural Intelligence.

Cultural Intelligence

It is an individual’s activity to favorably receive and adjust to an unfamiliar way of

doing things. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall, as cited by Schermerhorn (2008),
noted the way people deal with time varies across cultures called Monochronic and
Polychronic Culture.

 Monochronic Culture – people do one thing at a time with emphasis to

punctuality and sticking to set rules.
 Polychronic Culture – people do different things at a time with regards to
flexibility.

Geert Hofstede, also cited by Schermerhorn (2008), told the top 5 ranks in terms of
cultural dimensions needed for developing cultural intelligence:

1. Power Distance – A degree to which a society accepts the unequal

distribution of power among people in organizations and the institution of
society.
Ex. India and Philippines have high power distance because addressing a
person as ma’am/sir would mean that the person has high authority.
10
Wherein, the US and Australia have low power distance since people are
normally addressed with ma’am/sir for politeness and not as an indication
of power.
2. Uncertainty Avoidance – A degree to which society is uncomfortable with
risk, change, and situational uncertainty.
Ex. People in US are risk takers who introduce new products to the market
with certainty, unlike Japan and France.
3. Individualism – Collectivism – A degree to which a society emphasizes
individual accomplishments versus collective accomplishments.
Ex. US and Australia are characterized with ‘I’ and ‘me’ cultures where
employees prefer to work alone without help from others. Wherein, Thai,
Filipinos, and swedes prefer teamwork or collective works.
4. Masculinity – Femininity – A degree to which a society values assertiveness
and feelings of material success over concern for relationships.
Ex. Japanese and Mexicans show masculinity by pushing forward what they
want and according to their plans while, Filipinos, Thais, and swedes would
rather keep quiet and accept defeat if what they want is not acceptable.
5. Time Orientation – A degree to which a society emphasizes short-term
thinking versus greater concern for the future or long-term thinking.
Ex. Americans, as risk takers, prefer short-term thinking while Filipinos and
Japanese, non-risk takers, prefer long-term thinking.

Other Milieus: Local versus International Environment

An organization that operates in just one country is considered to being a local
environment. It has 3 factors to be considered, namely, General, Operating, and
Internal environment. But operating across borders would expand the business
greatly; the market alone would fold exponentially. It will provide better access to
the operating environment. But operating internationally gives a greater depth to
the 3 environments.

International Environment – the factors you face when you cross borders for
expansion. It involves: Exchange rates, political risks, taxation laws, social values,
education, and religious taboos.

Different Phases of Economic Development

 Developing Economic development – higher level of industrialization and per
income capita. They also have a high level of consumption despite the
relatively lower population growth rate.
 Developed Economic development - Lower level of industrialization and per
income capita. They also have a low level of consumption despite the
relatively lower population growth rate.

11
The Role of Business in Relation to the Economy And Society.

It creates wealth for the economy and society, and value through
stakeholder imbued by ethics and corporate responsibilities.

 Ethics – Morality of one’s action. Managers create ethical

organizations by incorporating moral reasoning into the decision
making processes that affect their stakeholder.
 Corporate Responsibilities – Obligation of a manager to operate the
business in ways that are beneficial to the company and society.

Ways to analyze Business Environments: PEST and SWOT Strategy

1. Political, Economic, Social, and Technological Analysis (PEST)

 helps you determine the impact of environment factors or conditions to the
long term performance and activities of the business.
 The outcome of this analysis is best used with another analytical tool called
SWOT.

2. Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat Analysis (SWOT)

 Threat and opportunity are used to analyze environmental actors or
conditions External to the firm.
 Strength and Weakness are used to analyze environmental actors or
conditions Internal to the firm.
 The elements are as follows:
Strength – kind of resource or capability that gives the organization an
advantage over its competitors in selling goods or services.
Weakness – lack of resource or capability that makes the company
vulnerable to competition.
Opportunity – a development that is favorable to the operations of the
company and will most likely improve its performance and prospects.
Threat – an unfavorable development in any element in the general
environment which can slow down the development of the company.

12
