LESSON 24: COMPUTER PROGRAMS (SOFTWARE)

Now that we have an understanding of hardware, we will learn about software. If we think of
hardware as the physical objects you can touch on your computer – the keyboard, mouse,
printer, etc. then it’s easy to understand that software is the stuff you can’t touch – the programs
that operate and execute tasks on your computer. There are millions of different types of
software available for computers.
Operating system
The operating system is the most important program that runs on a computer. To put it simply,
the operating system is the brain of the computer. Most computers use some version of Microsoft
Windows as their operating system. Apple’s OSX, Google Android or Chrome, and Linux are
other popular operating systems.

We have focused mainly on Windows 7 operating system today, but most Windows operating
systems before Windows 8 are roughly the same. If you are using one of the Library’s public
laptops, you will be using Windows 10, which as of 2018 is the newest Windows operating
system. Again, it looks a little newer and sleeker, but has many of the exact same functionalities
as Windows 7.
Other types of software
As mentioned above, there are millions of different types of software programs you can install on
your computer. For most new users, the most important types of software (besides the operating
system itself) include:

o An internet browser. This is the program that will allow you to connect to the internet and view
web pages. Popular browsers include Internet Explorer (which is pre-installed on all Windows
computers), Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera. An important thing about browsers is they are
always free. Every web browser allows you to access the same websites, but each browser
looks a little different and is set up in its own way, which is why many people have a preference
for one over another.
o A word processing program. A word processing program is what you will use to type up
letters, resumes, and other documents. Many computers come with some sort of word
processing software preinstalled (such as WordPad, Microsoft Office, etc.). You can also
purchase word processing software such as Microsoft Word separately.
o A media player. Most computer users will at some point want to listen to music or audio or
watch a video or DVD, so you will want to make sure you have a media player installed.
Windows computers come pre-installed with Windows Media Player which allows you to listen
to music, play videos, and even rip and burn CDs. Windows Media Player is free but there are
many other media player programs out there which may offer more features.
o Anti-virus software. Anti-virus software is used to prevent viruses and other malicious files
from being installed or taking over your computer. Most new computers come pre-installed with
some sort of anti-virus software, Two important things to keep in mind though: you must keep
your anti-virus software up to date at all times as there are co Device Drivers: It is a type of
software that controls particular hardware which is attached to the system.. Some
examples of device drivers are:

BIOS Driver
Display Drivers Motherboard Drivers
Printer Drivers

 Firmware: Firmware is the permanent software that is embedded into a read-only

memory. It is a set of instructions permanently stored on a hardware device. It
provides essential information regarding how the device interacts with other hardware..
Some examples of firmware are:
o BIOS
o Computer Peripherals
 Programming Language Translators: These are mediator programs on which
software programs rely to translate high-level language code to simpler machine-level
code. Besides simplifying the code, the translators also do the following :
o Assign data storage
o Enlist source code as well as program details
o Examples of Programming Language Translators are Interpreter, Compiler and
Assemblers.
 Utility: Utility software is designed to aid in analyzing, optimizing, configuring and
maintaining a computer system. It supports the computer infrastructure Software’s like
antiviruses, disk cleanup & management tools, compression tools, defragmenters, etc
are all utility tools. Some examples of utility tools are:
o Avast Antivirus
o Directory Opus
o McAfee Antivirus

 Graphics Software: As the name suggests, Graphics Software has been devised to
work with graphics as it helps the user to edit or make changes in visual data or
images. It comprises of picture editors and illustration software. Some examples are:

o Adobe Photoshop
o CorelDRAW
o GIMP
o PaintShop Pro

1. Freeware

Freeware software is available without any cost. Any user can download it from the internet
and use it without paying any fee. Examples are:

 Adobe Reader
 Audacity
 ImgBurn
 Skype
 Team Viewer
