ABOUT GREEK
Εισαγωγή
vowel sounds
Greek vowels are pronounced separately even when they’re
written in sequence, eg ζώο zo·o (animal). You’ll see though in
the table below that some letter combinations correspond to
a single sound – ουρά (queue) is pronounced u·ra.
When a word ending in a vowel is followed by another word
that starts with the same or a similar vowel sound, one vowel is
usually omitted and the two words are pronounced as if they
were one – Σε ευχαριστώ se ef·kha·ris·to becomes Σ’ ευχαριστώ
sef·kha·ris·to (Thank you). Note that the apostrophe (‘) is used
to show that two words have been joined together.

intonation
Intonation in mainland Greece is rather flat, except in ques-
tions, when the voice is raised at the end of the sentence. Many
island dialects have a more ‘singing’ intonation.

contents
The index below shows the grammatical structures you can
use to say what you want. Look under each function – in alpha-
betical order – for information on how to build your own
phrases. For example, to tell the taxi driver where your hotel
is, look for giving instructions and you’ll be directed to infor-
mation on negatives, prepositions and requests. A glossary
of grammatical terms is included at the end of this chapter to
help you.
Abbreviations like nom and acc in the literal translations for
each example refer the case of the noun or pronoun – this is
explained in the glossary and in case.

The verb είμαι i·me (be) changes depending on who or what is

present and past tenses.

case
doing things • indicating location •
naming people/things • possessing
Greek uses four different cases, usually shown by word end-
ings, to indicate a noun’s role and its relationship to other
words in the sentence. Adjectives, articles, demonstratives
and pronouns also change their form to agree with the noun
they go with.
19
demonstratives
indicating location • naming people/things •
pointing things out
The words for ‘this’ and ‘that’ in Greek change their endings
depending on the form of the noun they determine (see case,
gender and plurals). We’ve only given the nominative forms
here – in most cases you’ll be understood just fine.
have
possessing
The verb έχω e·kho (have) only changes form according to who
or what is the subject (doer) of the sentence. To form the fu-
ture tense (as in the example on page 22), just place the word
θα tha (will) in front of the present tense forms.
21
negatives
giving instructions • negating
To make a statement negative, add the word δεν ţhen (not)
before the verb:
I speak Greek.
Μιλώ Ελληνικά. mi·lo e·li·ni·ka
(lit: speak Greek)
I don’t speak Greek.
Δεν μιλώ Ελληνικά. ţhen mi·lo e·li·ni·ka
(lit: not speak Greek)

personal pronouns
doing things • making statements
In Greek, there are two words for ‘you’ – an informal one, εσύ
e·si (used with friends, younger people or family members),
and a formal one, εσείς e·sis (used when addressing strangers,
authority figures or older people). In this phrasebook we’ve
used the form of ‘you’ (and the verb form) appropriate for each
situation.

questions
asking questions
To ask a yes/no question, just raise the intonation at the end
of a sentence. Note that Greek uses a semicolon (;) instead of
a question mark.
The bus stop is over there.

verbs
a –z p h r a sebu il d er
doing things
The dictionary form of all Greek verbs ends in -ω ·o or -ομαι
o·me, which is the present tense form of the first person singu-
lar (like in ‘I eat’). The ending -ω represents ‘active’ verbs (which
show someone actively doing something – πηγαίνω pi·ye·no
‘go’), while -oμαι is for ‘stative’ verbs (which show a state or
condition, and don’t require movement – κάθομαι ka·tho·me
‘sit’). These endings change according to the subject of the
sentence. Sometimes changes in the verb stem (the form of
the verb before the ending) occur, but if you use the endings
shown on the next page, you’ll be understood just fine.
29
past
The past tense endings for all verbs are provided below. There
are some irregularities, however – as the stress in the verb moves
back to the third syllable from the end, the prefix ε e· (augment)
is added to the verb when there are less than three syllables.
Also, the final letter before the ending sometimes changes.
we γράψαμε ghra·psa·me
you pl γράψατε ghra·psa·te
they έγραψαν e·ghra·psan
30
word order
asking questions • making statements • negating
While the sentence order of subject–verb–object is most com-
mon in Greek, all other combinations are correct too – the
word order is relatively free as Greek uses case (meaning that
different word endings express the role of a word in the sen-
tence). You might notice, however, that emphasised words are
usually at the beginning of the sentence (see also negatives
and questions).

The Greek language has two forms of the word ‘you’. Use the
polite form εσείς e·sis with adult strangers, elders, or those in
a position of authority. In all other cases, you can use the in-
formal form εσύ e·si. The polite form is simply the plural form
of ‘you’, and you use it even when addressing one person. In
this book we’ve chosen the appropriate form for the situation
that the phrase is used in – it’s normally the polite form un-
less we’ve marked it otherwise. For phrases where either form
might be suitable, we’ve given both.
Also note that when speaking to older people you know
well, their first name comes after Κύριε ki·ri·e (Sir), or Κυρία
ki·ri·a (Madam).
Mr/Sir Κύριε ki·ri·e
Ms/Mrs Κα ki·ri·a
Miss Δις ţhes·pi·nis
Madam Κυρία ki·ri·a
on friendly terms
People will indicate when you can use the informal form of
m eet i n g peo pl e
the word ‘you’ (εσύ e·si). If you want to initiate a more infor-
mal conversation with a Greek acquaintance, say:
Please speak to me in the singular.
Μίλα μου στον ενικό. mi·la mu ston e·ni·ko
And here are a few casual terms to address your Greek pals:
friend φίλε/φίλη m/f fi·le/fi·li
dude ρε μάγκα re ma·ga
mate (Cyprus only) κουμπάρε ku·ba·re
