José Daniel Ortega Saavedra was born on November 11, 1945, in La Libertad,
Nicaragua. His father was a veteran of the peasant army founded by
Nicaraguan revolutionary César Augusto Sandino. Ortega was appointed
coordinator of the Junta in 1981. Three years later, Nicaraguan voters elected
him president of the country.

poets in history, being considered the greatest representative of literary

Antony Meléndez was born in Nicaragua on January 9, 1962 and is


recognized for being one of the most famous guitarists in the world, despite
being born without arms, he is today consecrated as one of the most influential
men in young Latinos and with his motivational talks has managed to
penetrate very deeply into the feelings of many young people with insecurity
problems.

Augusto César Sandino was the leader of a Nicaraguan guerrilla movement


that opposed U.S. intervention in that country from 1927 to 1933. His
opposition galvanized anti-American sentiment throughout Latin America and
helped convince U.S. politicians that the military intervention was often
counterproductive.
