the New Normal situation. As an educational tool, this module about, Abstract
Expressionism, challenges you as a learner, to become creative, resourceful and

Lesson Modern Arts:

1 Abstract Expressionism
The art movements of the late 19th century to the 20th century captured and
expressed all these and more. While earlier periods of art had a quite set conventions
as to the style, technique, and treatment of their subjects, various art movements
conveyed their ideas and feelings in bold, innovative ways. These were the exciting
originators of the modern art of the 21st century.

Art is part of our traditions and culture, it serves as means and necessity of our daily
life. Art allows us to express ideas, emotions and personal experience that will inspire
people to become creative, imaginative, and expressive.

Abstract expressionism is the term applied to new forms of abstract art developed
by American painters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de
Kooning in the 1940s and 1950s. It is often characterized by gestural brushstrokes
or mark-making, and the impression of spontaneity.
INTRODUCTION
The abstract expressionists were mostly based in New York City, and also became
known as the New York school. The name evokes their aim to make art that while
abstract was also expressive or emotional in its effect. They were inspired by
the surrealist idea that art should come from the unconscious mind, and by
the automatism of artist Joan Miró.

• Action Painting Action painting, sometimes called “gestural abstraction”, is a

style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled, splashed or smeared
onto the canvas, rather than being carefully applied. The resulting work often
emphasizes the physical act of painting itself as an essential aspect of the finished
work or concern of its artist.
Paul Jackson Pollock (/ˈpɒlək/; January 28,
1912 – August 11, 1956) was an American
painter and a major figure in the abstract
expressionist movement. He was widely
noticed for his technique of pouring or
splashing liquid household paint onto a
horizontal surface, enabling him to view and
paint his canvases from all angles.

Willem Kooning April 24, 1904 – March 19,

1997) was a Dutch-American abstract
expressionist artist. He was born
in Rotterdam and moved to the United States in
1926, becoming an American citizen in 1962.
One of the most prominent and celebrated of
the Abstract Expressionist painters,

Willem de Kooning's pictures typify the vigorous, gestural style of the movement.
Perhaps more than any of his contemporaries, he developed a radically abstract style
of painting that fused Cubism, Surrealism and Expressionism. While many of his
colleagues moved from figuration to abstraction, de Kooning always painted figures,

most notably women, and abstractions concurrently, making no distinction between
the art historical categories. De Kooning's real subject, he insisted, was space and the
figure-ground relation.

Colour Field Painting

• Color field is characterized primarily by large fields of flat, solid color spread
across or stained into the canvas creating areas of unbroken surface and a flat
picture plane. The movement emphasis on gesture, brushstrokes, and action in
favor of an overall consistency of form and process. In color field painting “color
is freed from objective context and becomes the subject itself”.
• Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still are deeply interested in religion
and myth. They created simple composition in large areas of color needed to
produce a contemplative or meditational response in the viewer.

Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz, was an American

painter of Latvian Jewish descent. Rothko did not personally subscribe to
any art movement, but he is generally identified as an abstract
expressionist.

Barnett Newman (January 29, 1905- July 4, 1970) was an

American artist. He is seen as one of the major figures in
Abstract Expressionism and one of the foremost of the
color field painters. His paintings are existential in tone
and content, explicitly composed with the intention of
communication a sense of locality, presence, and
contingency.

 Clyfford Still (November 30, 1904- June 23, 1980) was an American painter, and one
of the leading figures in the first generation of Abstract Expressionists, who developed
a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II.

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM IN THE PHILIPPINES

Abstract Expressionism in the Philippines developed in tandem with many post-World
War II movements that grew out the desire to remain current with international
artistic trends. Increased access to Western state grants and educational opportunities
in the Philippines’ former colonizing power, the United States, bought the American
movement to the Philippines where many of the country’s artists returned after
receiving an American education.

FILIPINO ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST

Jose T. Joya (June 3, 1931 – May 11, 1995)
was a Filipino abstract artist and National Artist
of the Philippines awardee. Joya was a
printmaker, painter, mixed media artist, and a
former dean of the University of the Philippines’
College of Fine Arts. He pioneered Abstract
Expressionism in the Philippines. His canvases
were characterized by “dynamic spontaneity”
and “quick gestures” of action painting.

Alfonso A. Ossorio (August 2,

1916 – December 5, 1990) is a
Filipino American abstract
expressionist artist. He was close
friends with Jackson Pollock who
also served as his inspiration. He
often experimented with diverse
mediums and he often tried to
