Ecotourism
Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment supports the
well-being of local people and involves interpretation and education.
It revolves around nature and the main motivation of tourists is the observation and
appreciation of the natural environment, as well as the traditional cultures
prevailing in natural areas. It includes pedagogical aspects and interpretation of
nature.
How would you compare ecotourism with regular tourism?
Ecotourism offers us the possibility of living an enriching experience and enjoying it
to the fullest in a more complete and personal way. Unlike conventional tour
packages, each experience offered by an ecotourism excursion is unique and
unrepeatable.
If a foreigner asks you about a place to do ecotourism in Colombia, what
place would you recommend and why?
I would recommend the Tayrona National Natural Park, it is one of the most
spectacular and a perfect place for ecotourism in Colombia.
The Tayrona National Natural Park, located on the Chocó coast, is an ideal place;
In addition, to see a large number of migratory birds and whales that arrive in the
Pacific is one of the best shows that can be seen. Here you can also do snorkeling,
ecological walks, diving and of course, rest and enjoy all of nature.
What are some of the biggest challenges and opportunities for ecotourism?
As an advantage, it involves the tourist by integrating him into the different areas of
natural interest in a region. The main disadvantage of this tourist alternative occurs
when there is a poor implementation of the different branches of ecotourism by its
managers. An example is the construction of tourist infrastructure in protected
areas with negative impacts on sustainable development. In this sense, the
solution is to make people aware of the consequences that irresponsible tourism
planning can cause to the planet in the long term. Ecotourism facilitates activities
for adults and children that allow them to enjoy the nature that surrounds them in
harmony. Among others, we can mention: Coexistence with natural spaces, enjoy
the flora and fauna, caving, kayaking, surfing, mountaineering, diving, climbing, hot
air ballooning, relaxation and meditation activities, hiking, skydiving, etc. All this is
complemented by interaction with the social and cultural environment.
Ecotourism then intends that visitors value the culture of these peoples, which in
many cases is characterized by: Respecting, conserving and worshiping nature as
part of their daily lives.
An important challenge of ecotourism is to sensitize the tourist with the protection
of the environment and the culture of the ancestral populations that can coexist
with it. The reality is that the sustainability of these cultures depends directly on the
value given to their worldview and customs.
How can ecotourism help communities?
Minimize physical, social, behavioral and psychological impacts. Create
environmental and cultural awareness and respect. Provide positive experiences
for both tourists and locals. Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
Ecotourism is reducing poverty and doing more to protect local environments and
even improve their conditions.
