Very good class!
(4) Johnsy becomes obsessed with the ivy vine outside her window.
Class who can now give me a very short summary of the story and what
can you say about the story including the author? The Last Leaf is a story of Johnsy, a poor young woman who is critically ill
due to pneumonia. She believes that when the ivy vine on the wall outside
her window would lose all its leaves, she would die too. However, her
neighbor, Behrman, an artist, tricks her by painting a leaf on the wall.
Johnsy recovers.”
‟I can really say that the story is very touching and there are lots of lesson
that we can learn from. I also admire the author for writing the story,
everything is interesting, and the character, the problem, the sacrifice
where Mr. Behrman used his passion to save someone, and I really
appreciate how the story ends.
Now that we really knew every detail of the story, I want you class to
write or put it on your notebook the themes that you realized from the
story. Try to elaborate your answer and relate it in your/our situation
nowadays.
One of the themes that I got from the story is about friendship. Sue and
Johnsy is inseparable, their love for each other is like they are siblings.
Sue is willing to do everything just for her best friend to be ok. Another
is Mr. Behrman, their neighborhood made a big sacrifice just to make
Johnsy feel better and get courage to live, he did this to make Sue as
well happy. Now that we are in the mid of pandemic, though we are all
affected by this, friendship is very important to help one another, our
love ones, our friends who got positive form the covid-19, let's try to
comfort them, let's try help them to pass the challenge that they've
been through.
Hope – Because of the care and concern of Behrman to Sue and Johnsy,
he tries to think the most effective way using his passion to help Johnsy
bringing back her hope and the will the live. Mr. Behrman character
symbolizes hope in the story as he didn't give up finishing the painting
that later on became his masterpiece not by beauty of it but how that
painting gives hope and chances for Johnsy his passion is truly a life
saver.
I. Evaluating Learning
For your assignment class, some of the themes in the story are death,
friendship, love and sacrifice. Choose one of these themes and write a
Slogan describing your thoughts about the theme.
Yes!
