Integrated Tourism Development Project for Tourist Destination at Lothal

Urban centres in India are transforming rapidly under the current movements of globalization and urbanization, the cultural heritage having one of the major role in the economy and entertainments of the current age. Simultaneously it upgrades the cities for national and international tourists. The development of large-scale infrastructure and communication network coupled with the qualitative improvement of urban and rural life attracts tourists to the vast resource of heritage in the country. But many of the historical monuments and its precincts are under threat as they are subjected to deterioration due to neglect and tremendous stress of western civilization. There is an urgent need to redefine our approach for handling this issue. The urban development must integrate the heritage precincts and establish a new relationship to capitalize on the growing needs of tourism and cultural change. This will not only conserve our heritage and culture but also enrich our present urban environment. It gives new meanings to our contemporary cities and lives. Heritage interpretation is the communication of information about, or the explanation of, the nature, importance, and purpose of historical, natural, or cultural resources, objects, sites and phenomena using personal or non-personal methods. It may be performed at dedicated interpretation centres or at museums, historic sites, parks, art galleries, nature reserves and a host of other heritage sites. Its modalities can be extremely varied and may include guided walks, talks, drama, staffed stations, displays, signs, labels, artwork, brochures, and audio-visual media. An interpretation centre, or interpretive centre, is an institution for dissemination of knowledge of natural or cultural heritage. Interpretation centres are a kind of new-style museum, often associated with centres or eco-museums, and located in connection to cultural, historic or natural sites. Interpretation centres use different means of communication to enhance the understanding of heritage. Many interpretation centres have temporary exhibitions related to a specific aspect of the site. An interpretation centre is a viable solution for effective communication of heritage information in municipalities and rural areas where resources may not exist to establish a traditional, full-scale museum, and where heritage can be an important factor for tourism development. Unlike traditional museums, interpretation centres do not usually aim to collect, conserve and study objects; they are specialized institutions for communicating the significance and meaning of heritage. They work to educate and raise awareness in order to conserve the local traditions and the excavated sites at Lothal. Lothal, Dist.Ahmedabad. Lothal, Dist.Ahmedabad is situated near the village of Saragwala in the Dholka Taluka of Ahmedabad. Lothal was one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Indus valley civilization. It was a vital and thriving trade centre in ancient times, with its trade of beads, gems and valuable ornaments reaching the far corners of Africa and Asia.
