Formwork Design
A wall form panel is to be designed for casting a reinforced concrete wall of 5.5m
high x 500mm thick x 8.0m long. In the form, the plywood is supported by rows of
horizontal walers. The walers are supported by vertical soliders which are fixed by
steel rods. You may use the maximum design concrete pressure for the whole height
of the formwork throughout. Assume the casting is done with a single lift.

Casting Conditions and Design Criteria:

Mix: OPC with retarder added
Concrete Temperature: 10-35 °C
Pour Rate: 3 trucks of 4.5 m3 each per hour
Allowable deflection: not to exceed 1/360 of span

Allowable Values

Component Resistance (E I) (q A)

Plywood 0.420 kNm/m 3.25 kNm2/m 6.86 kN/m

(a) Determine and plot the design concrete pressure distribution in 1-m intervals for
the wall form.

(b) Determine the maximum spacing (to the nearest 25mm) of the following items
for the vertical form panel:
(i) horizontal walings,
(ii) vertical soldiers, and
(iii) steel rods

(c) Calculate the tension in steel rods which keep the double skins in position
against the outwards concrete fluid pressure.

Assignment No.1B

Checking a Falsework Design

Fig. 1 shows the elevation layout of a typical transverse row of a birdcage

scaffold structure measured 7.8 m (H) and 8.4 m (W). There are 12 rows
of falsework framework in longitudinal direction each comprising of
mild steel tubing and fittings all complying with BS1139. It is designed
to support a vertical uniformly distributed load (UDL) of 7.0 kPa (which
has included the self-weight of the falsework structure, concrete slab
casting and operation loads). The design wind speed V d in the vicinity of
the structure is 20 m/s. Assume the scaffold structure is having a toe
board 0.15 m high at the roof level each at both windward and leeward
edges of the scaffold structure. The longitudinal spacing of scaffold is at
1.45 m center to center while the solidity ratio of the scaffold area
exposed to the transverse wind is 5%.

(a) Determine the total wind moment acting on the falsework structure.
Assume that the dynamic wind pressure is given by Vd = 40.4 q and
pressure coefficient C f = 1.3 and 2.0 for circular scaffolding tubing
and toeboard respectively.

(b) Determine the total leg load in kN in each individual verticals

(standards) of the scaffold under the combined vertical and horizontal
loading condition. Using the Table 1 to check the axial loading
capacity of the verticals against buckling. Identify if there are any
verticals under tension. Assume the tubes and couplers comply with
BS1139 and of “used” condition.

(c) Determine the minimum number of diagonal braces required to resist

the horizontal wind load. Draw the layout of the diagonal braces
provided for the falsework. Given that the coupler capacity is 6.25kN.

(d) Assume empty soffit form condition, the UDL due to self weight of
formwork and falsework is now reduced to 1.0 kPa while both edge
toe boards and the falsework are exposed to wind, determine the
safety factor against overturning for the falsework and calculate the
kentledge required if it is less than 1.2.

(e) Calculate the maximum soil bearing pressure under the timber sole
board, which measures 300 mm wide and 50 mm thick employed to
support the falsework legs. Given that the size of the base plate to
scaffold leg is 150 x 150mm.
