SUMMARY OF NOLI ME TANGERE

The narrative opens during a gathering held to welcome Crisó stomo Ibarra home after his
seven-year study abroad stint in Europe. Crisó stomo quickly discovers that his father, Don Rafael,
died in jail after inadvertently shooting a tax collector and being wrongly convicted of additional
crimes by Father Dá maso, the lifelong curate of the church in Crisó stomo's homeland of San
Diego. Don Rafael passed tragically just before his homecoming. Cristomo makes his way back to
San Diego, where he is joined by Mara Clara, his fiancée. Crisó stomo plans to construct a new,
cutting-edge school in San Diego when the schoolmaster complains that Father Dá maso and the
new curate, Father Salv, interfere with his ability to teach.

Crisó stomo rides a fishing boat with Mara Clara to a picnic where he assists the captain,
Elas, in killing a crocodile. Later, Elas informs Cristomo that there is a murderous plan against him
at the cornerstone-laying ceremony for the school, and indeed, while Cristomo is applying mortar
for the cornerstone, the derrick supporting the stone falls. Cristomo is unharmed, while the
derrick operator is killed. Father Dá maso attacks the new school, Filipinos in general, Cristomo,
and Don Rafael during a later meal. Crisó stomo strikes the priest in a fit of wrath, but Maria Clara
saves him from murdering the priest. Later, her father arranges for her betrothal to a young
Spanish man named Linares after terminating her engagement to Crisó stomo.

Father Salvi conspires with Lucas, the brother of the slain derrick operator, to plan an
attack on the Civil Guard barracks and to persuade the assailants that Cristomo is their
mastermind. The head of the Civil Guard is then forewarned of the attack by Father Salv. When
the assault is unsuccessful, the rebels claim that Cristomo was their commander; as a result, he is
detained. Elas assists Cristomo in breaking out of jail, and the two leave in a boat along the Pasig
River as the Civil Guard chases after them. Elas jumps into the river to draw the attention of the
hunters but is fatally injured. When news of Cristomo's death breaks, a saddened Mara Clara
insists on going to a convent.

SUMMARY OF EL FILIBUSTERISMO

Simoun is returning as Crisostomo Ibarra. Ibarra fled the Philippines and rose to
prominence as a jeweler during the 13-year gap between the plots of Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo. He returned to the Philippines while wearing a beard and going by the name
Senor Simoun. His former goal of using words and peace to eliminate Spain's dictatorship appears
to have been long abandoned. He develops a hunger for retribution for all the wrongs our nation
endured as a result of the tyranny of the Spaniards. He grows even more enraged toward the
book's conclusion when he learns that his sweetheart, Maria Clara, passed away in the convent.
Simoun is the Captain-trusted General's advisor.

He pushes the government to act irresponsibly and abuse its authority in an effort to incite
a popular uprising. The now-adult Basilio is initially hesitant to participate in Simoun's notion but
ultimately joins in on the action. Simoun began organizing riots and hiding weapons in an ally's
store. Simoun reveals to Basilio his plan to hide an explosive that contains nitroglycerin inside a
pomegranate-styled Kerosene lamp that Simoun will give to the newlyweds as a gift during the
wedding reception (the bride being the ex-girlfriend of one of Basillo's friends—Isagani) at the
wedding reception of newlyweds.
The late Captain Tiago's previous residence, which has since been packed with explosives
Simoun placed, will serve as the reception venue. Simoun claims that the lamp will only burn for
20 minutes before flickering; if anybody tries to switch the wick, it will explode and murder
everyone within the home, including significant figures from civil society and the Church
hierarchy. Simoun leaves the reception early and writes "Mene Thecel Phares," which translates to
"the future is predestined" and often implies that a negative event will occur. Simoun wrote his
true name, "Juan Crisostomo Ibarra," as his signature.

Ibarra is allegedly dead, which surprised many present at the celebration. It was Ibarra's
writing, according to one of the priests who knew him before Noli Me Tangere's conclusion. The
bulb began to fade, and Basilio was ready to leave the house because he thought it would explode
at any moment when he noticed Isagani, the bride's still-hurt ex-boyfriend, whose wedding
celebration was still going on inside Capitan Tiago's home. Isagani said that he wished the
newlyweds nothing more than success. Basilio informed him about Simoun's plot after becoming
concerned for his friend's safety. Isagani sprinted home.

When Isagani entered, a priest was ready to repair the light, but he discovered it and
hurled it out the window into the nearby river. Isagani leaped out of the window and into the
river as the guards chased after him. Simoun had an insurrection planned for the reception's time
period. When the band was apprehended, they admitted that Simoun was their leader. Ibarra was
now sought after both as Simoun and as Ibarra. After some time had gone, a kind priest saw an
injured and frail Simoun strolling down the coast.

Simoun explained that he is Ibarra, that he was deeply saddened and furious over the
failure of the revolution, and that he was questioning God as to why he was suffering and not the
ones who had abandoned the people of the Philippines. The noble priest cared for Simoun as he
said that he was Ibarra. All consequences, the priest says, will be meted out in due course. Ibarra
passed away as he was shakily holding the priest's hand. In the belief that they would always be
utilized for good, the latter blessed the former and flung all the remaining diamonds of Ibarra into
the sea.
