I. GENERAL
1 Preamble
This document covers 115KV & 13.8 KV CT &VT sizing calculation for the 115KV Lines, 115/13.8KV
Transformer & 13.8 KV Switchgear protection & metring at S/S Khafji 115/13.8KV S/S # 5.
2 Design Basis
ii)
As mentioned in PTS-11EN1031, Appendix IX, IEC-44, Part-6 and IEC 185, TPS class CT for all protection.
iii) CT secondary excitation limiting E.M.F and other parameters for CT sizing are calculated at adopted Tap as shown in
Relay and metering one line diagram ET-906823
iv) Lead length is considered for 2 ways.
v) Safety margin of 25% is considered forboth protection class CT and for metering class CT as per clause 17.g of PTS-
11EN1031, Appendix IX.
vii) Zs (source Impedance) is calculated based on CB Interrupting capacity. The line Impedance value will be added to Zs
to derive the fault current (PF & EF) at zone1 end for CT excitation limiting E.M.F calculation. Only on way CT lead
length is considered for PF zone1 Ual calculation & 2way CT lead length is considered for EF zone1 Ual calculation.
CT sizing calculation for close-in fault is done for 3phase fault since 40KA/25KA(115KV/13.8KV respectively) fault
level is considered for 3 phase and 1 phase fault.
viii) The Line parameters for 115KV line between S/S KHAFJI-5 and KHAFJI-2 is assumed for a typical
UG Conductor of length 15.3 Kms
= 0.0175
[1 + 0.004(75 - 20)]
6
= 0.0035 ohms/m
Resistance for 6 sq.mm conductor/m @ 75OC = 0.0035 ohms/m

2.4 Terminology
Eal : CT excitation limiting E.M.F (Eal = Ual Since leakage is negligible in TPS class CT)
O
Rct : Maximum resistance of secondary winding at 75 C
CT core: CT606.B.C1
CT Ratio: 1600-1200-1000-800-600/1A
CT sec.: 1A
Class: TPS
Ual: 1000 V
K: 4.17 (Ual/(Kssc*Isn*(RCT+Rb))
TRF: 2
SC Rating: 40000 A
As per manufacturer:
The CT Accuracy Limiting Voltage (Ual) shall meet the following requirements.
Ual2,Ual5 = Accuracy Limit Voltage for end of zone1 Line fault (Dist. Protection)
Ual3,Ual6 = Accuracy Limit Voltage for close-in Line fault (Dist. Protection)
IFZ1 , IF1 = Maximum primary fundamental frequency current for faults at the end of zone 1 reach (Dist. Protection)
IFMAX , IF2 = Maximum primary fundamental frequency current for close-in faults (Dist. Protection)
KRPA = Factor of the primary time constant for fault at the end of zone 1 reach
K1 = A constant with value equal to 180In for application where max. value of secondary through fault
current x primary X/R ratio is less than 350In
CT Ual Calculation
A) CT Ual1 Calculation
K: Dimensioning factor
'K' is dependent on If (Max. through fault current) & system X/R ratio and 'K'is determined as follows.
For relays set at Is1 = 20%, Is2 = 2 In, K1 = 30%, K2 = 150%:
K > 40 + (0.07 x (If x X/R)) AND: K = 65
This is valid for (If x X/R) < 1000 In
If x X/R = 82.34
(PF values are used since
this is higher than EF)
K > 40 + (0.07 x (If x X/R)) AND: K = 65 (Refer Annexure - B)
= 65 x 1 x (2 + 0.4375 + 0.25)
= 174.69 V - Result 1A
= 65 x 1 x (2 + 0.875 + 0.25)
= 203.13 V - Result 1B
Document Title: CT & PT sizing Calculation Doc no: EE-237393
As per PTS page 8 where maximum value of secondary through fault current x primary X/R ratio is less than 350In, K=180
K = 180
= 180 x 1 x (2 + 2 x 0.4375)
= 596.25 V - Result 2A
Ual4(EF) ≥ K x In x (Rct + RL + Rb)
= 562.50 V - Result 2B
(DISTANCE calculation)
As per Manufacturer
KRPA = 0.6
1+X/R= 10.21
= 0.6 x 10.863 x 10.21 x (2 + 0.4375 + 0.25)
= 178.84 V - Result 3A
KRPA = 0.6
1+X/R= 6.65
= 0.6 x 7.952 x 6.65 x (2 + 0.875 + 0.25)
= 99.15 V - Result 3B
As per PTS
CT Ual Calculation for (End of zone1 fault))
= 298.07 V - Result 5A
= 165.25 V - Result 5B
Result 2A is higher than other Results and CT sizing is calculated based on result 2A.
Since the available Ual(1000V) is higher than required Ual (746), the CT is suitably sized.
