CHAPTER – 1 Electric charges And Field

Worksheet -2
1. Does the Force Between Two Point Charges Change if the Dielectric Constant of the
Medium in Which they are Kept is Increased?

Ans: Dielectric constant of a medium is given by

k=FV/FM=force between the charges in vacuum /force between two charges in medium
⇒FM=FV/ k
From the above expression, it is clear that as k is increased, FM gets decreased.

2. Two point charges placed at a distance r in air exerts a force F on each other. At what
distance will these changes experience the same force F in the medium of dielectric
constant k?

Ans: Two point charge placed at a certain distance = r

force = F, dielectric constant =k
Let, two point charges q1 and q2 are separated r distance from each other.
Then, force experienced between then, Fair= q1q2/4πϵ0r2 = F
force experienced between then, F medium = q1q2/4πϵ0 k r’2 = F
Dividing both the equations we get, kr’2 / r2 = 1 , r’ = r /√𝒌

3. A force F is acting between two charges placed some distance apart in vacuum. If a
brass rod is placed between these two charges, how does the force change?
Ans:
Force acting between two point charge in vacuum F = q1 q2 /4πε0r2
force between point charge in medium

4. A free pith ball A of mass 8g carries a positive charge of 5x10-8 C . What must be the
magnitude of charge that should be given to a second pith ball B fixed 5 cm vertically
below the former pith ball so that the upper pith ball is stationary?
Ans:

1
5. Two similar balls of mass m are hung from silk threads of length ℓ and carry similar
charges +q and +q. Prove that when the system is in equilibrium, separation between the
balls is x = (q2ℓ/2πε0mg )1/3, assuming the angle made by the threads with the vertical
line passing through the point of suspension is small.

Ans:

2
6. Two point charges q1 and q2 are 3m apart and their combined charge is 20 𝜇C. If one
repel the other with a force of 0.075N, what are the two charges.
Ans:

7. Three point charges of +2uC, -3uC , and -3uC are kept at the vertices A, B, and C,
respectively of an equilateral triangle of side 20 cm. what should be the sign and
magnitude of the charge (q) to be placed at the midpoint (M) of side BC so that the
charge at A remains in equilibrium

3
Now, F⃗1=q1q2/4π∈0AB2 =9×109× (2×10−6)(3×10−6)/(0.20)2 =1.35N along AB
F⃗ 2=q1q2/4π∈0AC2=9×109×(2×10−6)(3×10−6)/(0.20)2= 1.35N, along AC
Resultant force of F1 and F2
F = √ 𝐹12 + 𝐹22 + 2𝐹12 𝐹22 cos 60 = √ 1.352 + 1.352 + 21.35 𝑥 1.35 𝑥 0.5 = 1.35√3 = 2.34N along AM
AM = √202 − 102 = 10√3 cm = 0.1 x √3 m
Net force on charge at A will be zero if: 9x 109 x q x 2 x 10-6 / (0.1 x √3)2 = 2.34
q = 2.34 x 0.01 x 3 / (0.1 x √3)2 = 3.9 x 10 -6C

8. Five point charges, each of value +qC, are placed on five vertices of a regular hexagon of
side L meters. Find the magnitude of the force on the point charge of value -qC, placed
at the Centre of the hexagon.

Ans

9. Two equal positive charges, each of 2muC interact with a third positive charge of 3uC
situated as shown in Fig. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the force on the 3uC
charge.

Force on charge at P due to charge at B , F2 = 2.16 x 10-3N along PB’

10. Ten positively charged particles are kept fixed on the X-axis at points x = 10 cm, 20 cm,
30 cm, ..., 100 cm. The first particle has a charge 1.0x 10-8 C, the second 8 x 10-8 C, the
third 27 x 10-8 C and so on. The tenth particle has a charge 1000 x 10-8 C. Find the

Ans:

11. An infinite number of charges each equal to 4 uC are placed along X-axis at x = 1 m,
x = 2 m, x = 4 m, x = 8 m and so on. Find the total force on a charge of 1C placed at the
origin.
Ans:

12. Charges of +5 uC, +10 uC and -10 u C are placed in air at the corners A, B and C of an
equilateral triangle ABC, having each side equal to 5 cm. Determine the resultant force
on the charge at A.
Ans : Magnitude of force F = 180N , Resultant force F makes an angle 600 with the force
F2

13. Four equal point charges each 16 u C are placed on the four corners of a square of side
0.2 m. Calculate the force on any one of the charges.
Ans: Force F = 110.3N
