1. Past continuous
Grammar explanation
We use past continuous to indicate actions that were in progress at a specific time in the
past, or when two actions were happening at the same time.
The past continuous structure is as follows.

Subject The past of Present participle The rest

the verb to be
I was watching TV yesterday.
She was not running in the morning.
We were playing football.
They were not having fun.

Note: To create questions in past continuous we invert the subject and the verb to be.
E.G. He was talking. Was he talking?

Examples:
- Two actions were happening at the same time.

E.G. Nick was cooking while Martina was taking a shower.

E.G. Sam was studying while his mum was making dinner.

- Actions were in progress at a certain time.

E.G. Last night at 6 PM, we were eating dinner.
E.G. Yesterday at this time, I was sitting at my desk at work.

Exceptions adding –ing.

- For verbs that end in -e (except if they end in -ee) we remove the -e and add –ing.
E.G. Take I was taking a taxi.

- After a short stressed vowel the final consonant is doubled.

E.G. Run They were running.

- For verbs that end in -ie we remove the -ie and add –y.
E.G. Lie She was lying.

1. Simple past VS past continuous
Grammar explanation

We use simple past to talk about a completed action or event that occurred at a specific
time in the past. On the other hand, we use past continuous to talk about an action that was
in progress in the past. We use the tenses together when an action is interrupted or stopped to
begin a new action. To separate the two tenses we use when or then.

Simple past Past continuous

- The action was in progress at a specific
- The action is completed in the past.
time in the past.
- Two actions were happening at the
- Series of completed actions in the past.
same time.

Examples:

- An action was interrupted (both tenses are used at the same time).

E.G. I was eating when she called.

(The action in simple past interrupts the action in past continuous).

- Mentioning an action/emphasising progress.

Simple Past Past continuous

(Mentioning a short action). (Emphasising progress).

She studied last night. She was studying all night.

In simple past sentences we only mention an action that took place in the past.
In past continuous sentences we emphasise the time that the action was taking place.

- Series of completed actions/two actions happened at the same time.

Simple Past Past continuous

(Series of completed actions). (Two actions at the same time).

She came home, ate with us and Marlene was sleeping while Alex

3. An extraordinary birthday party!

Instructions: Read the following extract from a diary about an amazing birthday party
and answer the questions below.

My birthday was on the 22nd of March. I had a huge party and all my friends and family
were there. I had the best time of my life. All of them were wishing me ‘happy birthday’ and
giving me gifts and food all day. I was hoping to get a new phone and a hair straightener from
my parents, but I didn’t. At lunch, we were sitting around the table enjoying the delicious
food that my mum had prepared for us. After that, there was a piñata, and while we were
hitting it, I heard my father talking to my mother about a treasure hunt. I was trying not to
eavesdrop too much because I didn’t want to ruin the surprise, but finally my dad confirmed
my suspicions. I was so excited! The treasure hunt took about an hour to finish, then it was
time for my birthday cake. It was my favourite type of cake, chocolate cream. After eating the
cake, it was time for everyone to start leaving. I was sad that the day was ending, but I will
always remember this birthday as the best birthday ever.

1. Participial adjectives
Grammar explanation
Most present and past participles that express emotions or feelings can be used as

feeling or the emotion.

Note: We cannot use the past participle form –ed with objects or situations as they do not possess
feelings.

Examples:
Verbs Past participles Present participles
Bore Bored Boring
Depress Depressed Depressing
Exhaust Exhausted Exhausting
Fascinate Fascinated Fascinating
Relax Relaxed Relaxing

1. Zero conditional
Grammar explanation

In the zero conditional we always use simple present tense. In these statements we have
two clauses, “the if clause” and “the main clause”. The main clause is always a fact and is the
result of the conditional clause (the if clause).

Examples:
Note: The word if can be replaced by the word when without changing the meaning.

Conditional clause + simple present Main clause + simple present

If I am late for work, my boss gets angry.
When I get up late, I miss my bus.

Notice that the order of the clauses can change, but the condition always has the same result.

1. Did you know?
Instructions: Read the following interesting facts about animals and practise the pronunciation.

Some facts that you may or may not know about different animals.

- When sea otters sleep they hold hands.

The reason is to avoid drifting apart during the night. It could be terrible to wake up and
find that you are all alone.

-When dolphins sleep they only rest half of their brain and always have one eye open.
Dolphins are always watching for predators and they need to surface to breathe during
the night. This is why they are always half awake.

-Turtles, whales, dolphins and crocodiles drown if they are under water too long.
These animals do not have gills and hence they often need to surface for air.

- Cows produce more milk when they listen to music.

Just like people, when cows are relaxed they perform better. Relaxing and listening to
music is proven to help this.

- When a cat falls from a height it turns itself to land on its feet.
Cats have an extremely good sense of balance and if a cat is upside down, it can correct itself
very quickly. If the height of the fall is too short, a cat may not have the time to correct itself.

1. Changing my lifestyle!
Instructions: Read the forum about some life changes that people made in their lives and the
advice they give. Then answer the questions below.

Amelia87: Hi, I just wanted to write in this forum to get some advice about how to live a healthier
and happier life. I’ve tried many things but I always fail and begin my bad habits again. Any advice
would be great. Thanks!!

Livelife: Hi Amelia87, there are many options you can consider about changing your lifestyle
habits. In my case, two years ago I was a mess. I used to party all the time and never looked after
myself. I also used to change jobs all the time just because I was bored. The first thing I did was
to identify all the things I wanted to change, then I began to associate with people who had a
good influence on me. Now, the best people to hang out with are those who used to have the
same problems.

Johnny J: Hey Amelia87, it’s great to read you have taken the first step to improving your life.
This is the hardest part of making a change. I used to dream of changing my life but never did
anything about it. I used to have three jobs and only ate take-away food. I even used to sleep
at the office sometimes because it was easier than going home and coming back. Finally, I had
enough and one day, I just quit my job and moved to the countryside. Now, I work in a horse
ranch and I’ve even met an amazing girl who I want to marry. Sometimes, you just have to take
a chance and go for it.

Young Stella: Amelia87 you need to change things in your life very slowly or it will be too much
stress all at once. Your hardest task is not to fall back into doing the things you used to do. Focus
on one thing at a time, like if you eat bad food, start there. Fill your fridge with only healthy
options and get rid of everything else. Once you are used to only eating good food, you can
move to the next part of your life you want to improve. Probably you need to write a list of all
the things you want to change and do them one at a time. Good luck!

Amelia87: Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions guys. I’m going to start ASAP and I will
post about my progress to keep motivated. Thanks again!!!

3. My life in the 1970’s

Instructions: Read the following paragraph and practise the pronunciation.

I was a young girl in the 1970s. My friends and I used to do a lot of things which

stunned our parents and relatives. We used to do things that they never did. We smoked, we

wore short dresses and went dancing all the time. We danced mostly to Cher and Abba. We

also got the chance to see Abba live at a concert. It was extraordinary! My boyfriend had a

car, a 1972 Dino Ferrari, so he used to pick us up to go to Malibu. On the other hand, I used

to love watching films starring Al Pacino, especially ‘The Godfather’. I still love to watch this

film, it’s my favourite. I can remember it all so clearly… I enjoyed this time of my life so much!

1. Present perfect with yet and already
Grammar explanation
We use the word already when an action happened or is completed earlier than we
expected. In present perfect ‘already’ usually goes after have/has and before the main verb. We
use ‘yet’ to ask about an action we expected to be done, and also to respond when the action hasn't
happened or isn’t completed but will be in the future. It usually goes at the end of a sentence.
Present perfect form: has/have + past participle.
Examples:

Already Yet
We've already had our breakfast. The bus hasn't come yet.
The others have already left. We haven't finished the work yet.

Questions with already and yet

A question with already expresses positivity, that’s to say, the action might be completed
early. A question with yet expresses negativity, the action might be completed late.

Question with already Question with yet

Have you already finished the homework? Have you finished the homework yet?

1. Present perfect continuous
Grammar explanation

We use present perfect continuous to express that something started in the past and
has continued up until now. We can focus on the amount of time the action has been continuing,
or just the fact that the action has been ongoing and is not completed.
Present perfect continuous form: has/have + been + verb + -ing.
Has →
3rd person singular (he, she, and it).
Have → All other persons (I, you, we and they).

The following are periods that can be used with present perfect continuous.
E.G. "For 34 minutes," "for three weeks," and "since Saturday."

Examples:

Affirmative sentences Negative sentences

Instructions: Read the article about the Greenpeace organisation. What is their purpose, and
what are they trying to achieve?

Greenpeace is the largest environmental organisation in the world with 2.8 million

supporters worldwide, as well as regional offices in forty-one countries across Europe, the

Americas, Asia, and the Pacific. It is a non-profit organisation based in Amsterdam, the

Netherlands that has been operating since 1971. It is one of the nongovernmental organisations

that have consultative status to the United Nations, and is an active participant in international

conferences on the environment such as, the 1992 Rio Earth Summit and the 2002 Johannesburg

Earth Summit and their treaty processes. As a global organisation, Greenpeace focuses on

what are the most crucial worldwide threats to the planet's biodiversity and environment.

Using nonviolent means, Greenpeace helps to stop climate change, protect the oceans,

stop whaling, stop genetic engineering, stop nuclear threats, eliminate toxic chemicals, and

encourage sustainable development. Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments

or corporations but relies on contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants.

This organisation has already made some incredible advancements in the fight to help

the environment. Some have been involving brutal tactics and others a more gentle approach.

Their battle will continue until a time that the world is no longer threatened by the people who

inhabit it.

1. Future inventions
Instructions: Read the following extracts from the “Mirror online tabloid” about some of the
technology that is planned for the future.
Source: Http://www.mirror.co.uk.

1. Dream linking
Using pillows with conducting fibres in the fabric, it will be possible to see and monitor
electrical activity from the brain. This will not only show when someone is dreaming, but recent
developments indicate that we’ll also be able to tell what they are dreaming about. It is also
possible (with prior agreement presumably, and when both people are in a dream state at the
same time) for two people to share dreams. One could try to steer a friend’s dream in the same
direction, so that they could effectively share a dream, and may even be able to interact in it.

2. Shared consciousness
Many people believe one day we´ll have full links between our brains and external
computers. We’ll be able to access more information outside the brain, making us much smarter,
with thought access to most of human knowledge. The link will also allow us to share ideas directly
with other people, effectively sharing their consciousness, memories and experiences. This will
create a whole new level of intimacy, and let you explore other people’s creativity directly.

3. Immortality and body sharing

While computers get smarter and more advanced, our understanding of the brain will
also improve. Using new information processing and storage technology will allow us to have
external data banks linked to our minds so we can learn more and also to keep our knowledge
backed up. Eventually, most of your memories, ideas and knowledge will be outside your brain
stored safely. When your body dies, you’ll only lose the knowledge still based in the brain. Most
of your mind will carry on. You’ll go to your own funeral, buy an android body and continue
living. Death won’t be a problem. If you don’t want to use an android, maybe you’ll link into your
friends’ bodies and share them, just like students hang out on friends’ sofas. Life really begins
after death.

1. Modal verbs for speculation
Grammar explanation
We can use modal verbs to guess specific information about a situation based on known
or seen evidence. Speculating information can be incorrect as the statement is only a guess.
There are modal verbs to show more or less certainty about a speculation. We use the modals
in many tenses. It is not necessary to change the form of modal verbs according to the tense or
the subject.

Examples:

More probability Less probability

Must/mustn’t Could/couldn’t
Can/can’t May/may not
Will/won’t Might/might not
Should/shouldn’t

-Modal verbs for present and future. -Modal verbs for past situations.
Subject + modal + main verb. Subject + modal + have + past participle.

- It must be hot, it’s 40 degrees outside. - They could have gone home early.
- I’m sure they will arrive at 7:30. - It may not have been this direction.

her home alone.

While I waited for my brother on the phone, I started chatting to my niece, I love
her, she told me they went to a shopping centre together last week and she lost her dolly.
Disaster! She has a lot of toys and she is always losing them, no big problem! However, she
said it was very upsetting and she was crying so much that my brother decided to begin
searching the places where she could have left it. Then, he said to her "you might have
left it at home”. So, they went home and guess what? The dolly was there!!!

Obviously, my niece forgot about the dolly immediately after that, but the most
important thing was that the dolly was recovered to be lost again another day.

1. Mystery story
Instructions: Read the following story written by Luke Thompson, then underline
the past perfect tenses that you find.

Last night I was walking home next to the river Thames, when something strange happened
to me. It was late at night and I’d had a long and difficult day at work. There was a large full moon
in the sky and everything was quiet. I was tired and lonely and I’d just had a few pints of beer
in my local pub, so I decided to stop by the riverside and look at the moon for a while. I sat on
some steps very close to the water’s edge and looked up at the big yellow moon and wondered
if it really was made of cheese. I felt very tired, so I closed my eyes and after a few minutes, I fell
asleep.
When I woke up, the moon had moved behind a cloud and it was very dark and cold. The
wind was blowing and an owl hooted in a tree above me. I rubbed my eyes and started to get
up, when suddenly I heard a splash. I looked down at the water and saw something. Something
terrible and frightening, and unlike anything I’d ever seen before. Something was coming out of
the water and moving towards me. Something green, strange and ugly. It was a long green arm
and it was stretching out from the water to grab my leg. I was so scared that I couldn’t move.
I’d never been so scared in my whole life. The cold green hand was moving closer and closer
when suddenly there was a blue flash and a strange noise from behind me. Someone jumped
onto the stairs next to me. He was wearing strange clothes and he had a crazy look in his eyes.
He shouted “Get back!” and pointed something at the monster in the water. There was a bright
flash and the monster hissed and disappeared.
I looked up at the man. He looked strange, but kind. “Don’t fall asleep by the river when
there’s a full moon”, he said “the moon goblins will get you.” I’d never heard of moon goblins
before. I didn’t know what to do. “Who… Who are you?” I asked him. “You can call me… the
doctor.” He said. I was trying to think of something else to say when he turned around and said,
“Watch the stars at night, and be careful of the full moon”. I was trying to understand what he
meant, when there was another blue flash and I closed my eyes. When I opened them again,
he had gone.
I couldn’t believe what had happened. What on earth were moon goblins, and who was
the mysterious doctor? And why had he saved me? I was determined to find the answers to
these strange questions. I stood up, looked at the moon and quickly walked home.

1. Reflexive pronouns
Grammar explanation
We use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object in a sentence are the same.
Reflexive pronouns end in "self" (singular) or "selves" (plural). “By” is added before a reflexive

Examples:
Subject pronouns Reflexive pronouns -Have you seen it yourself?
I Myself -My cat always licks itself.
You Yourself
He Himself -Never mind. We'll do it ourselves.
She Herself -Alison still does not trust herself.
It Itself
We Ourselves -Brandon accidentally cut himself.

1. Second conditional
Grammar explanation

We use the second conditional to talk about a hypothetical situation in the future, and
the hypothetical reactions to the situation that are unlikely to occur.
The second conditional is formed as follows: (If + past simple)… (would + infinitive).
Note: After all the subjects, we often use the subjunctive form 'were' and not 'was'.

Examples:

If clause (past simple). Main clause (would + base verb).

If I married Nicholas, I would be happy.
If she met the Queen of Spain, she would say hi.
If I were in Brazil, I would go to Rio.

Notice that the order of the clauses can change, but the condition always has the
same result.

Main clause (would + base verb). If clause (past simple).

I would be happy if I married Nicholas.
She would say hi if she met the Queen of Spain.
I would go to Rio if I were in Brazil.

2. Exercises

1. Moving to another country
Instructions: Read the following text and give your opinion about it.

Living abroad

Deciding to live and build a new life in a foreign country is one of the most challenging
decisions a person can make. When you’re living abroad there are many things that will change.
More than likely, most of the things that you used to do will be different. We’re talking about
habits, seasons, a new landscape and maybe another language. Read the following topics and
learn more about it!

Getting used to new things!

Get used to making new friends

Of course you will not forget your friends from home, but you will have to make a new circle.
That’s not easy at all. It is nice to meet new people but they will never replace old friends.

Get used to learning new languages

Living in another country could be the best opportunity to learn a second language. This takes
time and dedication but offers numerous benefits and opportunities for your life, such as: better
job prospects, experiencing new cultures and more travel.

Get used to starting from zero

Many people enjoy the sensation of freedom they get when they have the chance to start from
zero. Starting over is maybe the most common justification for moving overseas.

Get used to learning about a different culture

Every country has its own culture, dogmas and values. Trying to understand all these topics
instantaneously is very difficult. Nowadays, suffering from cultural shock is a common result of
living abroad. Perhaps this is the hardest part of moving to another country.

3. A new place to live!

Instructions: Read the following text and circle the comparatives and superlatives that you find.

My best friend and I need a new place to live. We spent all last week looking
at houses. We found two houses that we liked, but we couldn’t decide which one was
more suitable.
I loved the first place that we visited. It was closer to my work and also it was in
a newer, cleaner building, which I found more attractive. The inside was brighter due
to its big windows. The view was nicer too, the best in the city I think. Unfortunately, it
was more expensive than the second one. My friend liked the next place that we saw.
It was an older building in a more interesting neighbourhood. The house had larger
rooms and the rent was cheaper. Sadly, it was farther from work than the first place.
We are going to look at more places next weekend. I’m sure we will find one
that we both like! Hopefully, something that is more accommodating for us!

4. What do you think?

Instructions: Ask your classmates the following questions according to the previous text.

A. What do you prefer, a small or big place to live?

B. Did you use to love your first home? Was it a house or a flat?

or living alone?

1. Passive voice
Grammar explanation
Sentences can be active or passive. In an active voice sentence the subject carries out an
action and is mentioned first (it’s the most important part of the sentence). Whereas in a passive
form the subject of the sentence complements the action and the object of the action becomes
the most important part, and is mentioned first. We can use passive voice in all tenses by placing
the verb 'to be' into whatever tense we need. You can form the passive as follows.

Subject + auxiliary verb be + main verb (past participle).

Examples:
Passive with some different tenses

Tense Active Passive

Present simple I make a sandwich. A sandwich is made by me.
Present continuous I’m making a sandwich. A sandwich is being made by me.
Present perfect Recently, Samuel has been Recently, the work has been being
continuous doing the work. done by Samuel.
Past simple I made a sandwich. A sandwich was made by me.
Past continuous I was making a sandwich. A sandwich was being made by me.
Present perfect I have made a sandwich. A sandwich has been made by me.
Past perfect I had made a sandwich. A sandwich had been made by me.
Future simple I will make a sandwich. A sandwich will be made by me.

Some situations where we use passive voice

- When we want to change the focus of the sentence.

E.G. ‘The Scream’ was painted by Edvard Munch. (We are more interested in the painting than
the artist in this sentence).

- In scientific writing.
E.G. The sodium hydroxide was dissolved in water. This solution was then titrated with hydrochloric
acid.

- You want to be vague about who is responsible.

E.G. Mistakes were made. (Typically found in government reports).

- We don't know who did the action.

E.G. My wallet has been stolen. (We do not know who did it).

1. Tag questions
Grammar explanation

Tag questions are very common in English. These are short interrogative questions at
the end of statements. They are used in spoken language, especially when we want to check
something is true, or invite people to agree with us. They replace formal questions such as: "is
that right?" or "do you agree?”.

Examples:
The basic structure of a tag question is as follows.
- A positive statement is followed by a negative question tag.

Positive statement Negative tag

They are from Morocco, aren’t they?

- A negative statement is followed by a positive question tag.

Negative statement Positive tag

He doesn’t speak much, does he?

Note: If the main clause includes an auxiliary or modal verb you must use the same verb in the
tag question. If simple tenses are used, the verbs ‘to be’ or ‘to do’ create the tag question.

Some examples with common tenses

Simple past You went to Tenerife in 1998, didn't you?
Present perfect Michelle has worked a lot, hasn't she?
Future simple Steven will be here soon, won't he?
Modal verb Elisa should pass her exam, shouldn't she?
Modal verb You can play the violin, can't you?
Modal verb Peter could find a job, couldn't he?

Some exceptions

- The question tag after I am in a positive statement is aren't I.

E.G. I'm late, aren't I?

- After an imperative (do/don't do something) the corresponding tag question is: will you?
E.G. Don't smoke in this room, will you?

1. The Titanic
Instructions: Read the following report about the history of the Titanic. Then underline the
passive voice sentences you find.

The Titanic was built in 1912 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard. The design was said to

be unsinkable, and the ignorance of this thought pattern by the builders resulted in the ship

not being equipped with enough lifeboats for the total number of people who were travelling;

as they were deemed a waste of space and unnecessary on an unsinkable ship. Despite of all

the comments about its indestructibility the Titanic was impacted by an enormous iceberg

on the night of April 14th 1912 and unfortunately, it sank incredibly quickly. Approximately

1,500 people drowned that fateful day. Although a tragedy, consequential movements began

to ensure a repeat incident would not occur. These included, new international sea laws to

implement safety measures and also an ice patrol was instigated.

A number of expeditions were launched to find the Titanic, but it was not until seventy-

three years after the ship sank that the wreck was found on the sea bed, and the ship could

be explored. Many artefacts from the ship have been recovered from the ocean and others

have been donated by the survivors of the disaster.

1. Wish
Grammar explanation
We use wish to talk about something that we would like to be different. We use past tense
forms to talk about most wishes. Look at the examples below.

Note: The verb to be is written in plural for all the subjects.

E.G. I wish he were here. He wishes I were there.

Examples:

- Past tense forms to talk about wishes in present.

E.G. I don’t like this job. I wish I worked somewhere more interesting.
E.G. It’s too cold. I wish I were somewhere warmer.

- Modals would and could to talk about wishes.

E.G. I always have to get home early. I wish my parents would let me stay out later.
E.G. I don’t like my seat. I wish I could get a better one!

- Past perfect to talk about wishes in the past (expressing regret).

E.G. I wish I had gone to bed earlier last night. (I am sorry I went to bed late last night).
E.G. I wish I had studied harder when I was at university. (I’m sorry because I didn’t study enough).

- Wish VS hope.
We use "wish" to ask for outcomes that are highly unlikely or near impossible. On the
other hand, we use "hope" when the chances of that outcome are possible.
The difference between "I hope" and "I wish" can be better understood in the following
example. Using the two following modals, can for ability and could for possibility.

I hope I can... I wish I could...

E.G. I wish I knew the answer. E.G. I hope you have a great day.
E.G. I wish it would stop snowing. E.G. I hope we can still be friends.
E.G. I wish I were tall. E.G. I hope Virginia has a lovely holiday.

1. Such and so
Grammar explanation

Such is a determiner and so is an adverb. Structures using 'such' and 'so' are similar in

E.G. Lunch was so good that we decided to have dinner at the same restaurant tonight.

1. Connectors
Grammar explanation
Connecting words link ideas and sentences, in addition, they help to show coherence
and cohesion in writing. They have different purposes, such as to contrast information, make
comparisons and express agreement, among others. Look at the examples below and learn how
to use them according to the categories.

Examples:

4. Your engagement ring may say something about your marriage!

Instructions: Read the following paragraph and underline the linking words you find.
Then discuss the topic with your classmates.

Are you going to propose soon? Don’t worry if you can’t pay for a giant, expensive

engagement ring because a recent study suggests that the bigger the diamond ring is, the

shorter the marriage will be. Economics professors at Emory University have shown through

an extensive survey; that men who spend between two to four thousand dollars on an

engagement ring are actually more likely to divorce than those who spend less. People spend

large amounts of money on rings and wedding celebrations, therefore, they have financial

stress related to wedding debt. It’s just cause and effect. Of course, you will need more than

a small diamond to have a long marriage, but you can take this information into account for

the future (just in case).

1. Neither… nor/either… or
Grammar explanation
Neither indicates that two negative ideas, from separate subjects, are linked together in
a negative conjunction. On the other hand, either expresses alternatives between two options
or choices.

Examples:

- Either/or is used in a sentence affirmatively when referring to a choice between

two possibilities.
E.G. We can either eat now or after the concert. It's up to you Laura.
E.G. You can have either the red shirt or the blue one.
E.G. Do you want the window or aisle seat? Either is OK.

- Neither/nor is used in a sentence negatively when you want to say that two
or more things are not true or both options in a choice are refused.
E.G. Neither my sister nor my brother went to the park.
E.G. Neither Spain nor England got to the quarter finals last year.
E.G. Do you prefer tea or coffee? Neither, thank you.

Singular or plural.
-If both elements are singular, the verb is singular too.

E.G. Either the father or the mother has to attend the meeting. (Father and mother are singular;
so the verb “to have” is in singular too).

E.G. Neither Peter nor Steven is going to read the report. (Peter and Steven are singular; so the
verb “to be” is in singular too).

-If one of the elements is plural, the verb is plural too.

E.G. Either Michelle or the girls are going to prepare dinner tonight.
(The girls are plural; so the verb “to be” is in plural too).

E.G. Neither the teacher nor the students were in the classroom this afternoon.
(The students are plural; so the past of the verb “to be” is in plural too).

Manager: Hi, that’s me. How can I help you, Jane?
Tenant: Well, my window is broken.
Manager: Oh, that sounds bad. What happened?
Tenant: I’m not really sure, I wasn't home when it
happened, but I suppose it might have been
the neighbourhood kids.
Manager: What leads you to assume that?
Tenant: Well, among the broken glass I found a ball and
some rocks.
Manager: Although a ball is not solid evidence, it sounds like
they are to blame, but I can’t do much about it,
except arrange a new window. I’m sorry Jane.
Tenant:
In addition, I saw them playing just before I left home,
that’s why I’m almost certain they did it. I need it
fixed ASAP, can you help me?
Manager: Well, it will take a couple of days to repair.
Tenant: So do I have to pay for the repair?
Manager: Since you didn't break it, you won’t have to pay.

1. What to do to survive
Instructions: Read the following text and practise the pronunciation.

Natural disasters such as floods, lightning, earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis affect
thousands of people every year. They are extreme, sudden events caused by environmental
factors that injure people and damage property. Everyone should be aware of the risks and
be prepared to protect themselves and their family, before and after an event.
In order to reduce human and economic losses, it is important to provide communities
with disaster education, where people understand warning systems and receive information
about how to be ready in case of a catastrophe. Not only helpful points in relation to
recognising the dangers, but also knowing what to do if an event arises will assist in making
effective decisions.
Some things you can do to increase chances of survival are: keeping a kit with first
aid supplies in a handy location, this is a must-have item. Have a collection of consumables
prepared that you would need to survive for up to 3 days. Another important factor is
developing an emergency plan that you should be familiar with before the disaster, and
ready to act on it in case the unthinkable happens.
Finally, each emergency is unique and possessing knowledge of the necessary actions
to take for each threat will impact the specific preparations you make. Many people die
in accidents and natural disasters simply because they don't know what to do, and find
themselves waiting for someone to tell them. So please, plan accordingly.
