METHODS OF CREATING INDIVIDUALIZED DIETS FOR ATHLETES

Thesis: It provide guidelines for the appropriate type, amount and timing of intake of
food, fluids and dietary supplements to promote optimal health and sport performance
across different scenarios of training and competitive sport.
Introduction
Diet should be optimal in both quality and quantity of food, in order to replenish
energy reserves and avoid fatigue or inadequate nutrition. A good diet will help the body
perform at its best.
This overview will primarily address dietary approaches that can be successfully
used with athletes and active individuals to facilitate weight loss, while retaining lean
tissue. Any weight loss program should also minimize the risk of disordered eating
behaviors and pathogenic weight loss practices that can arise when an athlete is dieting
(Werner et al., 2013).

I. Weight Issues in Athletes and Active Individuals

A. Those who are over fat or obese based on body-fat levels.
B. Those who are already lean, but desire additional body fat loss.
II. Concept of Dynamic Energy Balance
A. Achieving a Healthy and Competitive Body Weight
B. Dynamic Energy Balance
C. Predicting weight loss with Dieting
III. Dietary Strategies for Weight Loss/Maintenance
A. Avoid Severe Energy Restriction
B. Monitor Protein Intake, Quality, and Timing
C. Timing of Food Intake Around Exercise and Spreading
Meals/Snacks During the Day
Conclusion
Weight management plans need to be individualized considering both the sport
and the weight loss goals. If an athlete needs to lose weight, working with a supportive
team (e.g., coach, sports medicine team, and sport dietitian) will help ensure success. In
addition, the sport dietitian can help make daily meal plans, address nutrition and sport
supplements and health issues, and make sure the athletes is fueled for their sport.
Although athletes expend high amounts of energy in exercise, they may still need to
monitor diet and lifestyle to maintain a competitive body weight.
INTRODUCTION

Physical health is the key to an active lifestyle. It depends on strength, skill, and

endurance, whether going for the ball or making that final pushes across the finish line.

Being the best takes time, training, and patience; like a car, the body would not run

without the right fuel.

Diet should be optimal in both quality and quantity of food, in order to replenish

energy reserves and avoid fatigue or inadequate nutrition. A good diet will help the body

perform at its best. This overview will primarily address dietary approaches that can be

successfully used with athletes and active individuals to facilitate weight loss, while

retaining lean tissue. Any weight loss program should also minimize the risk of

disordered eating behaviors and pathogenic weight loss practices that can arise when an

athlete is dieting (Werner et al., 2013).

This paper focuses and limits on the various reasons why athletes needs to create

their individualized and proper diet and also the possible solution on achieving and

maintaining a competitive body weight.

The main objective of this paper is to give the reader sufficient information and

ample background on the grounds of these competitive athletes. This study also tries to

provide nutritional support to allow the athlete to stay healthy and injury-free.

The researcher gathered the information through the use of internet as the primary

sources of the paper. In addition, the conclusion/s made by the researcher will be based

on the collected readings gathered.

Nutrition is very important for athletes because it provides a source of energy

required to perform the activity. The food we eat impacts on our strength, training,

performance and recovery.

For the athlete and active individual, management of weight can be difficult when

good-tasting food is so convenient, abundant, and relatively inexpensive. Even though

athletes spend high amounts of energy in exercise, they may still need to monitor diet and

lifestyle to maintain a competitive body weight. In fact, the proportions of protein and

carbohydrates that you require will vary depending on both the intensity and type of sport

so to get your individual balance right you should contact a qualified dietitian for

professional help with your sports nutrition.

It was stated here that “A car would not run without the right fuel”. It seems like

without a proper diet, we can no longer achieve the goal of having a competitive body

weight. Being an athlete must consider the rules and methods of proper diets in order to

maintain a good and healthy lifestyle.
