DESIGN EXAMPLES – DETERMINATION OF MAIN

REINFORCEMENTS IN FLANGED SECTIONS (T-SECTIONS)

EXAMPLE 1
Determine the ultimate moment of resistance of the reinforced concrete T-section
with the following design data.

Data
Flange width 800 mm
Flange width 150 mm
Effective depth 420 mm
Area of tension steel 1470 mm2
Characteristic strength of steel 460 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of concrete 30 N/mm2

SOLUTION

If no resultant axial force on section

Fcc  Fst  0.45 f cu b f s  0.87 f y As

0.87 f y As 0.87  460  1470

 s   54.47 mm
0.45 f cu b f 0.45  30  800

h f  150 mm; s  54.47 mm

Hence s  h f therefore the stress block lies within the flange.

-1-
s 54.47
x   60.52 mm
0.9 0.9

z ds
2    420  54.47 2   373mm

Taking moment about the cenriod of reinforcement gives:

M  Fcc  z  0.45 f cu b f  s  z  0.45  30  800  54.47  393 106

 M  231 kNm

EXAMPLE 2
A reinforced concrete T-section with design data given below is to be designed
with an ultimate design moment of 180 kNm. If a grade 30 concrete and a HYS
bars are used;
a) Determine the true nature of the stress block
b) Design the main tension reinforcement.

SOLUTION

Since the design moment is given, the moment of the flange has to be
determined.

 h   100  6
M f  Fcf  z1  0.45 f cu h f b f  d  f   0.45  30 100   350   10
 2   2 

 M f  162 kNm

Therefore, M f  M u . Hence the stress block must extend below the flange.

2. Determination to what extend does the stress block goes into the web

Using the stress block, and from equilibrium,

M  Fc 2  z2  Fc1  z1  M f  Fc1  z1  162  0.45 f cu bw sw  z1

 s   s 
but z1   d  h f  w    350  100  w 
 2  2

 s 
 180  162  0.45  30  200sw  250  w   106
 2

 s 
 180  162  2700sw  250  w   106
 2

This will give a quadratic equation in terms of sw . Solving will give: sw  28 mm

 s  (h f  sw )  100  28   128 mm

s 128
 x   142 mm
0.9 0.9

d 350
but   175 mm
2 2

Hence x  d ; therefore COMPRESSION REINFORCEMENT NOT

REQUIRED.

From the equilibrium of the section

Fst  Fc 2  Fc1  0.87 f y As  0.45 f cu b f h f  0.45 f cu bw sw

0.45 f cu b f h f  0.45 f cu bw sw 0.45  30  400 100  0.45  30  200  28

 As  
0.87 f y 0.87  460

 As  1538 mm 2

Alternatively, using equation (1) for tension reinforcement

M  0.1 f cu bw d  0.45d  h f  180  106  0.1 30  200  350  0.45  350  100 
As  
 h 
0.87 f y  d  f  
0.87  460 350  100
2 
 2 

 As  1599 mm 2

This compared with earlier value does not vary much.

Note:

Equation (1) can only be used when only after confirming that compression
reinforcement is not required. This can be done by checking if “Moment of
resistance of concrete is greater than Design moment”
